YEah your sh*t is sounding messed up. DHCP should automatically find a nice juicy IP address for you compliments of the house, no effort required.
 :o
Im on a Mac though and thats a whole other world.

Well, at the very least if we can't fix the SqueezeBox you can play with PrintKey.  :)

The program works like any Windows program.
Once you have the image captured,
Click on the big purple "SAVE" button (the icon is an Out box)
Save as a jpg to your desktop or folder of your choice.
You will have to upload the image to a server or into the AC Gallery so we can see it (of course).
Or Click on "File"
In the drop down box you have more choices.

Regarding the firewall, It's the basic MS stuff that comes with Windows XP.

So to recap what I've got, the SB shows these:
(4 of 18): IP Address 192.168.0.1
(8 of 18): SlimServer 192.168.0.1
(14 of 18): Host name 192.168.1.102

1.) 9 times out of 10 a failed networking connection is caused by the firewall (but I did have a router die this summer, that was a bugger to figure out)

2.) Disable the Windows firewall as a test. Unplug your internet connection first to be on the safe side.

3.) Start Button --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Windows Firewall

4.) Restart computer - this will let the network connections start from scratch.

Quote
Every few minutes, Windows gives me an error message: "There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network" with the yellow exclamation point in the task bar.

The computer (or router) and Slimserver (SqueezeBox) may have the same default IP address. I had this problem with a router and my DSL modem, changing the router's IP address fixed the problem. The weird thing was it did work for a while and then stopped, just like your problem.

When Bryan comes over try setting your computers IP address to 192.168.0.101

Bryan - PM received and 'bounced back'.  :thumb:

Wayne - (it is Wayne, isn't it?) I wasn't sure about having to post the image on a gallery. That's why it wasn't working. Wasn't sure if "image capturing" could be literally cut and pasted.
Thanks for the headsup regarding the Printkey! Cool stuff.

Mike - You're a Mac guy. That explains a lot about you. Now I understand.  :P

Does your Squeezebox work if you hook it up wired?

Nice doors btw... Would they be expensive to ship to NY? Just a single door

My guess is probably not.  It's a different setup than most as the PC that's also the server is doing a dial-up connection then the router is after the fact.  I'm going to head over there tonight sometime and see what I can figure out.

Thanks for the compliment Mike.

A padded crate is $350 and freight is about the same, so about $700 shipping cost. You can sometimes save $80 by picking the crate up at the terminal, but it depends on the carrier.

Mike's correct Wayne. Your doors ARE stunning. Please feel free to bump your thread next time you have another door completed.

OK Guys - I spent about 3 hours at Bob's last night and didn't get it working.  I'm open to suggestions.  Here's the setup:

PC with Slim Server is connected to the internet via a dial-up connection through AOL.  This gives the PC an outside IP address.

The network port of the PC is then connected out to a router with a wireless capability.

When I got there, I checked the info on the network card of the PC.  It had an inside IP of 192.168.0.1 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.  There was no gateway specified and there were no DNS servers listed.

Slim Server sees itself having the OUTSIDE IP address - couldn't find a way to change this.  This is the number found at the bottom of the main page under the network settings in SlimServer.  Also, the IP address from the outside as well as the gateway and the DNS server are all dynamic and change every time he connects to the outside world

I tried using a proxy address in SlimServer but couldn't get that to communicate either.

The router IP address is unknown and no utility was installed on the PC to control it.

SB3 successfully connects to the wireless network with no problem but won't see the PC.

If we use DHCP on the PC for the network card, it pulls in another external IP address so that's not an option.  We specified it to be 192.168.1.100

I hard coded the IP address of the SB3 to be 192.168.1.101 so there are no conflicts there.

When sitting at a DOS prompt, if I ping the IP of the machine I'm on, it pings fine.

Pinging 'localhost' comes back (with SlimServer running) as 127.0.0.1 and pings fine - 127.0.0.1:9000 is the IP/port used to allow a browser to connect to SlimServer.

Pinging the default IP of the router (linksys - 192.168.1.1) I get nothing.  Same when I tried the 192.168.0.1 he said things had previously.

The thing I'm unsure of is when I hardcode the IP for the network card in the PC, I'm not sure what that's doing to the router IP - if anything.

Any thoughts?  I'm also going to go to the Linksys and SB forums and see if anyone else has run into this.  This is the first time I've had to work on one where the SS was on a dial-up machine and not had it's IP served from a cable modem/DSL via a router.

I think you need to get the Router software and set it up to reserve the IP for the computer...
HEre: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/392525.html

"Additionally, click on the Advanced button next to "DHCP Relay Server" on the same tab. You can reserve IP addresses to machines of given MAC addresses.

I think this is the feature you are after."
Maybe this helps.

All firewalls were off.  There is no problem with connections from the SB3 to the network

Mike - that's part of the issue.  He doesn't know the IP of the router and the utilities to access the router aren't on the PC and the disk was not available.  No way to get into the router to do any of these settings.  I tried all of the default router IP addresses that I knew of for all brands and nothing would find it.

hmm...

Youd probably have to download the software, and upgrade the router.. Im sure there firmware on the Linksys site.
Id reset the router too. Its comfangled. Maybe we need to call in the National Guard.
And go to 7.1, no sense in using old software

Bob / Bryan,

I have a Netgear Router (WGR614 v6) which I 'm not using at the moment.  Let me know if you want to give it a try. :thumb:

The router IP address is unknown and no utility was installed on the PC to control it.

I hard coded the IP address of the SB3 to be 192.168.1.101 so there are no conflicts there.

Pinging the default IP of the router (linksys - 192.168.1.1) I get nothing.  Same when I tried the 192.168.0.1 he said things had previously.

Did you try another network cable? Cables go bad. Probably not the problem but I like to try the easiest first then move toward the impossible.

What is the model number for the Linksys router? If Bob doesn't have the manual then you can download one, the manual usually has the default IP so you don't have to guess. Once you have the default IP then either ping the router or use the re-set button. On some routers you have to hold the button in for 5 -10 seconds, the manual will have directions.

Unplug the slimbox to eliminate variables.

The number one priority is to ping the router. If you can't ping the router no matter what you try, then the router died.

The default IP for my D-Link was 192.168.0.1, but I changed it to 192.168.0.5 to eliminate possible conflicts.
Once you know the routers IP, you can open Internet Explorer (Firefox has bugs with configuration with some routers like my D-Link), type in the address and use the setup page. The maunual also has the default password.

But if both the PC and the router has the same IP address, you will have to change the PC's address to access the router.

-- Every few minutes, Windows gives me an error message: "There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network" with the yellow exclamation point in the task bar.

I would have changed the PC's IP address instead of the Squeezebox. If the router is 192.168.0.1 the PC should automatically adjust, but you wrote the PC is also 192.168.0.1 so there is a conflict, just like Windows says with the yellow exclamation point.
