I thought the holy grail was the WE metal base 101d.

I have a weak pair of black base 101d (ST shape), a single metal base el34, 2 metal base GZ34, slim bottle GZ37,  83v rectis, cunningham 345 globes, vintage 6A3 tubes  and some other sought after small signal tubes. Nothing like what i see you post though.

Philips type 80 rectifier, the best type 80 rectifier I have ever heard. Made in Holland.

Hi Jehuty,

Do you consider this type 80 to be better than the GEC U52 recti?

Hi wisnon,

I have not heard the WE metal base 101d. How much do they go for usually? The 205D in my picture can go for up to $1,500 each last time I checked. I know the price does not give you an indication if a tube is better sounding than another but usually the highly sought after ones do sound fantastic. When I get my hands on a pair of WE 101D metal base I'll do a comparison.

Hi Jehuty,

They're pretty much on par but if you put a gun on my head, I'll take the type 80 because I like the mesh plate hahaha.... Having said that, I would take the Genelex Gold Lion U52 over pretty much any tube rectifiers (that's including the Western Electric 274B, YMMV) so if you can get the Gold Lion, go for it! And if you don't like it, please sell it to me. Always happy to collect the Gold Lion  :)

101Ds go for about the same price as you mentioned.

I will check out the Genelex U52, though the Mullard fat bottle GZ37 and the GEC U52 are more often touted online.

The EL84 tubes are hard to see, but this OddWatt Poddwatt Series 1 amplifier is powering my kitchen table system and I built it from a kit almost 3 years ago.

US Army Signal Corps VT-1 triode by Western Electric. The very first vacuum tube used by the US military (hence the VT-1 designation), WWI vintage.  Found it in an antique store on Martha's Vineyard; the owner gave it to me for free, but I insisted he take $1 for it. Filament lights right up, too!

The glass is incredibly thick for a tube. Built to withstand punishment.

This is my Fisher 400CX-2.  I have never enjoyed a piece of equipment as much as this one.  It seems to turn everything it touches to sweet magic.
