If you find a great deal on any type of headphone and think we'd like to know about it your probably right!! This thread is the place!!!
Post about it, Link us to it and be on the lookout for more especially if you've heard them, own them and recommend them!!!
-
I'm not sure that this qualifies as a "hot deal" but for those in Sydney AU Len Wallis is still selling HD-650s for $500. I realize that isn't the cheapest you can get them anywhere but it's cheaper than getting them from headroom and you can go and listen to them first.
http://www.lenwallisaudio.com/products/accessories/headphones/hd650
They also have some used/demo Stax discounted (somewhat, not a huge amount though).

Anytime it saves somebody here at AC some cash its a deal!!! :thumb:

Staples has the Sony DR-701IP for on closeout for $40. Lists for $150.
I just went to the Staples in Hawthorne, Ca (next to Costco). They had these little foamboard things for the 701's, I grabbed one, gave it them, they went in back and brought out the cans. There was one more foamboard out when I left, so that store should have one pair left.
This came up about a week ago on head fi, and I went to a few staples last week and didn't see any. But, I think you need to either ask someone, or find the foamboard thing ;)
There is no sign anywhere saying that these are on sale, so you might get lucky and find them still.
Took a quick listen, not broken in, but they sound good, especially for $40.
They are the iphone version of the MDR-ZX700, search for "A11" on this page for a review.

Radioshack has their Auvio headphones on sale for half price $9.99. In stock form they are a tad grundgy, but if you remove the small metal grill in the ear canal and use the smallest size silicon tip the sound is quite respectable. Similiar bang for the buck as the MEE M9 which I also own.
The M9's are more detailed than the Auvio's' I would decribe the Auvio's as being smoother and more euphonic.

Ha! I lived a 1/2 mile from that store up until a month ago. I stopped by the store in Torrance on my drive home and all they had was a display model, which they wouldn't sell. They allegedly checked the other local stores and said all the other stores were sold out. Plus, the sale price tag said $64.95, not $40.
Glad you grabbed yours and hope they make you happy. :thumb:
-
So I went back to the Hawthorne store for santacore, and they were sold out.
However, they checked and did find some other stores around LA that still have them, so they are still out there.
I listened a little more last night and this morning, still burning them in, but I think that if you can score them for $40 they really are a killer deal. On head-fi, Joker gave them a value rating of 8.5 out of 10 (subjective of course), at a price of $120.
I can drive them out of either my iphone or with better sound out of my hisoundaudio studio, and they sound fine. Sound better still with an amp, but the amp is not required.

Randy, thanks again for making the effort to try and score me a pair. I'll check some stores in the Burbank area where I work. Thanks again!!!

I have a pair of the SR-80s that Grado Labs makes that I listen to at work. They are an open ear design, so you can't turn them up as loud if you have neighbors close by, but for the money, I haven't heard anything quite as good.
http://www.amazon.com/Grado-Prestige-Series-Stereo-Headphone/dp/B000G3LCQC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349670330&sr=8-1&keywords=grado+labs
I had a chance to go and listen to the RS1i model near where I live, and they are amazing, but much more expensive. If you are looking for a cheaper pair of very good sounding headphones, I would recommend checking out either the SR-8i0 or the SR-125i/225i. These aren't on sale right now, but I have found them to be a very good deal even at retail price.

Thanks Mate, after checking Amazon/newegg deals for the holidays i was a bit disappointed. Most of the discount headphones were beats by dre, and such headphones.
Razordog deals have $50 or $100 Instant Rebate on certain headphones, they are sennheiser/akg/beyer authorized retailers.

Hi all,
With the rearangement of the site, I couldn't find this circle. Anyhow, a friend gave me a pair of the Senda Wooden headphones from CCrane company. They are $60. I don't really trust my ears any more as far as tonal balance goes, but they do seem to be fairly dynamic. I am using them on my computer at the moment. There have been times, when these phones spook you in to thinking there is someone in the room with you. They have little tiny holes going around the top of the phones just below the headband. So I guess you could say these are semiopen phones. They are on the ear type, and I can wear these for hours. my Sony phones after awhile start to feel uncomfortable to wear.
Anyhow, just wondered if anyone else has listened to them yet? They do have a short brake in time, like a couple of hours. The cable is attached by two 1/8 inch plugs, one on each phone.
it might be my ears, but they seem to have a slight emphasis in the lower mids--upper bass area. At first you hear some resonance which seems to go away after awhile. Anyhow, just was curious, if any takers yet?
Ray Bronk.

***Fostex T-50 RP for $89 (you can mod them later, Mad dogs)
Dan only gives you $60 credit if you send in your own T50rp's to be "Mad Dogged," though. And you have to pay to ship them over I think. That's why I sold mine and just bought MD's instead. (Wanted to play with them, didn't have the time.) Considering how simple the mods are - Fostex could literally make a Mad Dog for under $30 a pair more than the factory T50rp in parts, labor, and dealer markup, maybe $35 if you add in the suspension headband - the improvements are remarkable. I'm not minimizing the development that went into the MD, and I think Dan charges a fair price for the sound he gets out of these relatively cheap things. But in mass production the MD mods wouldn't add much cost-wise.

The HE300 has small soundstage according various users reports.
Better buy the HE400 and planar over the hills...

Sennheiser HD700 for $499 at Newegg
http://flash.newegg.com/Product/9SIA29P2NU2848
It is consensus that this HD700 has poor sound.
How many years did it take this crap lowered price?
It shows that this manufacturer is the most authoritarian
and greedy around the audio field I have see in decades IMO.
Many phones of this brand have a
minimum list price even today.
We want the HD800 for this price.
Of course this store is not losing money on this sale.

Hi dB Cooper.
35 years ago I've owned a pair of Stax I think it was the Lambda ???
(Black - rectangular shape)
Everything with them was good.
Sound as clear as crystal, nice bass, very dynamics.
35 years later I still kick my xxx on a daily basis.
Why did I do something so stupid ?
What was I thinking ?
Well, I was young and stupid inexperienced.
Well, 35 years later I am less demanding and my Sennheiser HD650
with Bottlehead Crack satisfy me.

By the way, if one day I am really short of space in my house or more likely my apartment,
I will go for a Schiit Magni2 or Schiit Jotunhelm (DAC-HP Amp.) with of course my HD650,
all that on the condition that the above is still available and that my HD650 are still
operational ? ? ? ?

Beyer T1 for $629 (new):
https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-T1-Audiophile-Stereo-Headphone/dp/B0031RD3YY/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1473262822&sr=1-2&keywords=beyer+t1
This kind of discount you wont will see in Seenheiser hp,
I was unaware T1 was in this low price.
I wonder if this low price is due it is first Gen?
-
If you read down the ad there is a T1.2 priced at $1099 listed. I have not heard the T1 except at noisy shows but it did sound good. The price point at <$700 puts it in competition with some lesser sonic units and I doubt that tilting the driver makes a $400-500 difference in the T1.2.
-
I got one from Amazon more than a year ago for $766. The T1 has been way up and down, and the T1 first gen. definitely has very angled drivers.
How so? The second gen is not angled?
-
$600 is a realistic price for top hp as T1,K812,HD800 etc its what they worth, the rest is fat for the audiophool Euro&US market.
-
Only megabuck headphone I have heard (I actually have to hear a product before making a judgment about it) that I thought was (possibly) worth the money was the Stax SR-009 (~$5200 plus electrostatic-capable amp). I'm sure not all are worth anything like their price. A good example is the T1... The design is basically identical to the DT series, with the drivers angled in the cups (which costs nothing to implement). So that leaves the entire cost difference to the drivers. Is the cost difference really justified? I guess it is if people buy it.
For all the disrespect it gets for its 'dark' presentation, the venerable HD650 still has one of the smoothest (peak and dip free) high ends out there. This must be one of the hardest things to get 'right', judging by the fact that so many headphones don't. A little treble boost and voilá, bye-bye darkness. To me, the 650/K712/DT990 range is right before the Law of Diminishing Returns starts to kick in (and does so big time as you cross the $1K threshold.) But the SR009 is my current 'Lottery' headphone.

It's easily 'cured' if your source accommodates EQ. Here's what I am currently running mine at:

This curve gently boosts the highs, flattens out the midbass 'hump', and gives be a little counteraction of the bass roll-off. Now back to your regularly scheduled Hot Headphone Deals....

Hmm, Massdrop just announced their version of the Sennheiser HD6xx for $199...
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx?mode=guest_open
-
Compare that to the K7XX which is made in China. I think Massdrop is being a little deceitful by representing them as "$650 MSRP, which is the MSRP of the Austrian-made K712. Nothing against China per se, but it seems Massdrop is being a bit deceitful by implying that these are the Austrian-made K712's. I have heard that AKG is moving all their production to China and thus it would make sense that AKG might be releasing the K7XX essentially for QC testing purposes.
As far as the Sennheisers go, I have seen the HD650 at significant markdowns a few places recently, so I wonder if this classic may be reaching end of production. Between the discounting and Massdrop, I guess there goes my resale value....
-
From everything I've heard, the K7xx is very similar to the K701, but not the equal of the K712. Worse yet, a lot of buyers got K7xx's with rattling drivers, and went through lots of hassle and delay getting replacements.
That's why I think the K7XX is a QC test for AKG. Get some out into the field and see how they fare out there in the real world. BTW Massdrop refers to the K702 Anniversary specifically as the base for the 7XX (supposedly identical to the 712) claiming the lows have been "jacked up by 3dB [compared to the 701] to provide totally immersive sound imaging" (whatever the hell that means). Your report of QC issues doesn't inspire confidence, but it may support my theory that the 7XX is a QC trial run before shutting down the Austrian lines and pink-slipping all the workers there. Also may be noteworthy that the AKGs keep turning back up on Massdrop although always in relatively small production runs whereas the Sennheiser drop is rather large ( >5000 units IIRC.)
As much as I like to believe in miracles, I feel confident that the HD6xx will not be the quality equal of the HD650, although it hopefully will have a similar sound. Again, not to be pessimistic, but the smoothness of sound of Sennheiser's 600 and 650 have a lot to do with the workmanship and materials in those earcups that dampen out resonances etc., and at $200 and built in Ireland for the HD6xx, they have to cut a few corners. I hope to get one, so I'm switching to optimistic right now.
Good point. Probably won't be. One struggles to imagine how they could provide equivalent quality at < half the price. However, Sennheiser must have long since amortized their R&D and tooling costs on these models. But if they were just giving you a better deal on the same headphone' it would be the same headphone- not one with cosmetic changes (any changes to a production line cost something to implement.) As Dale speculates, what non-cosmetic shortcuts have been taken? One place they could cut corners would be substituting conventional plastic in areas where carbon fiber is used in the 650 (noting your point about resonance control.) Another easy 'cut' would be less fastidious driver matching. A lot of listeners wouldn't notice these effects unless they were severe.
It would be interesting to get a 7XX and a 6XX into Innerfidelity's lab and see how they compare on the dummy head to the 'real deal' products. Wonder if Tyll would be interested. Maybe I'll email him.

The dirty little secret of the AKG lineup is that the K612pro is actually better than everything in the 700 family.

There is no reason to risk a dubious purchase on a dynamic HP when you can buy a planar legit HE400S for $299.

You can find the HD600 or 650 on sale for around $200 several times a year. I've passed on them each time but was seriously tempted. The seller was making a profit in those scenarios, as well. Here, you have a group buy making one lump sum purchase so the profit is there for the manufacturer. Audio equipment is very well marked up. Most headphones probably cost very little to manufacture.

The dynamic driver refuses to die. It's still a valid design approach, enough so to make it hard to make a blanket statement that one or the other is 'better'. There are good and 'meh' examples of both.
-

Not sure what's "dubious." Innerfidelity says it measures the same as the stock 650. As for dynamic vs. planar, I own both types of headphones. There's nothing magic about an etched plastic sheet.
As for the HE400S, I agree that's a good-sounding set of headphones. However, the build quality is horrid. I sent mine back after a week because their cup paint couldn't withstand the "abuse" of being placed on a desk a few times a day. The Senns (I also have a pair of 600s) IMO sound better (though both are legitimately good-sounding headphones, with reasonably neutral balance - the Senns are a touch laid back, the HE400S's a touch aggressive - and a very spacious presentation) and are a whole lot more durably constructed and finished.
Can you give me an instance, like a screen capture, of the 600 or 650 selling from an authorized dealer, brand new, for $200?
I've never seen a 650 for $200, but earlier this year there was a sale at Adorama or B&H that had the 600 for 200 and the 650 for 250. But I've never seen a 650 sell for $200.

Almost all headphones benefit from a proper amplifier, but if you can't afford one right now don't worry about it. Just get the headphones and buy an amp later.
-
Guys,
Thanks for the info! I've always wanted a pair of these and I primarily only listen to Classical Acoustic Guitar, Violin and Cello and like you said may not need one and I'm OK with that. In fact, a few years ago I bought a Schitt for my Grado SR60 and my Shure 840 and thought it was a down grade in sound quality in comparison to my ModWright Sony 5400.
Hopefully, I'll be one of 5,000!

Wig these are not Engineers just audiophiles expressing their opinions, you should look at the sponsor circles who actually build these things good or bad doesn't matter still better than just biased opinions of audiophiles
i'm gonna be hated for saying this, :duh:
-
Nevermind the fact that some of us actually are engineers by trade, but both Dale and myself have extensive headphone experience. The Sennheiser HD600/650 are a very well known quantity to me, having owned many iterations of it over the years and paired it with many different amps both simple and exotic. The Massdrop HD6xx is a very very close variant of the HD650, so I can say with a high degree of confidence that it is going to sound best with an amp.
Dale is correct that the Sennheisers experience a large impedance swing in the midbass. If your headamp has a larger output impedance, this is going to cause a shift in the frequency response. As well, it may potentially cause a sag in the power delivery which may lead to distortion or clipping. Issues of damping factor may also result, although the audibility of this is generally very small.
That all said, the HD6## family are still good headphones even if you don't have a proper amp, which is why I said he should get it and worry about the amp later.

MASSDOUCHE
Wasted 2 hrs. receiving oops and spinning green wheels trying to
place order for hd6xx. Last year did Amazon have black Friday
deals on Sennheisers?
-
I wouldn't really put too much blame on Massdrop here guys. The demand/hype on the HD6xx has been nuts and it's easy for even the most prepped servers/IT to be overwhelmed when the rush comes in.
Just like Black Friday at a retail store; it doesn't matter how well you prep, that stampede when the doors open is an unstoppable force.
-
No, actually. First, ripping your CD with Verify ON will give you a perfect copy of your tracks that real-time CD play cannot do. Second, a good DAC will likely reduce jitter compared to the CD DAC. Third, an amp matched to the requirements of the headphone will most likely be better than a "default" amp.
Not only that but wouldn't the high output impedance causes damping factor issues and frequency response anomalies with many speakers (this is probably less of an issue with planars which tend to have flat impedance curves). On the other hand, planars thrive on current, current that the line stage is probably not designed to deliver (it is designed to see a load of ~10-50Kohm, not the ~32 ohms it sees with a planar headphone, which probably looks almost like a short to it.) I wonder whether that would be good for the line stage long term... Just thinking aloud (I know just enough to be dangerous)

I was the 780+ customer this morning to order but transaction didn't go through! Oh well...

I will keep my eye open for upcoming sales on HD600, which I hear are more neutral.

I think you need a Bottlehead Crack, it have a special synergy w/the HD600:
http://bottlehead.com/product/crack-otl-headphone-amplifier-kit/
There is a pall AC member here that are used to built these kits but I dont know who is, or made yourself if you can handle a solder iron for even lower cost.
Its great for 300/600 Ohms HPs but some users find it good for 100 Ohms also.

If you want a tubed solution, also consider the Beezar Torpedo transformer-coupled amp, has taps for 32 and 300 ohm headphones and appears to be an easy kit build (All on a single board, no point to point wiring. http://beezar.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=153

I'll throw another vote in for the Bottlehead Crack. I've built that one about three times now and it is an excellent match with Sennheisers.

Interesting; apparently there is (or will be) a $299 model also. Worth keeping an eye on. Even if these turn out not to be 'world-beaters', they may bring a 'trickle down' effect to lower the price-of-entry to planar technology, which would be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I would say that yes, Planar are better sounding. They can respond more quickly than dynamic drivers and with less distortion. Obviously, design comes into play with how a headphone sounds, but as far as the technical side is concerned...yes, planar is generally superior. The HE400I on sale right now are probably the best deal around by a long shot.

Congratulations and enjoy your new headphones..
With the HE-400i’s, amplification is not a must but will certainly make them sound there best.. I didn’t find the break
in period to be very long at all but I guess it all depends on how often you use them.. If memory serves me, I think
it was about a week for mine.. I don’t own a tube amp at this time but I would love to try one..

I read a lot of reviews, many said these were bright sounding.

I read a lot of reviews, many said these were bright sounding.
I think you are refer the old HE300, Massdrop inform this driver is new and other mods.
-
I question how much "modding" Massdrop does to what they sell. Any changes to a mass-produced product raise production costs, making it harder to offer that product at a bargain-basement price. I am also wary of what appears to be an all-sales–final business model- no returns, murky warranty status in some cases, and difficulty getting defective items handled under warranty. I guess as always, caveat emptor.
-
Massdrop has actually been quite actively engaged with the headphone community, so they aren't just releasing rebadged pieces. Well, sorta technically they are, but there are enough changes to make them stand out. Plus they are working with fairly high numbers which will offset the initial production costs.
-
I bought the HE350 cans in the first drop. Headband is metal spring steel and I do not find them bright. What I did pleasantly get was , for $99 dollars, a good fairly well balanced headphone. Not a bass head thumper or a really quick attack but pretty solid sound across the spectrum. I changed the pads to HiFiman leathers and got a much better seal and feel. The complaints are just that. Some of the people that purchased will never be happy with detail...they want slam, apparently some thought they were planars, some broke them trying to mod them, some probably just have really poor quality sources.

Worth to mention this HE350 driver is 50mm, similar size to the 53mm Sennheiser HD800 but by $99.

Does anyone have any comments on what the new planar headphone from Monoprice will be like?
Their new amps are rebadged ATIs. Are the Planars from another manufacturer? Seems like these would be quite a deal.

The ISK 9999's arrived yesterday and I got to listen to them today for a short time, I will try to take some pix and let you know how they sound to me.
They came from the ISK guy up in British Columbia, they are made in China.
Neat case, lots of "stuff" in them...$79, free shipping, they came in brown grocery bag quality paper, and the cost of shipping was 19.51 on the package, thats probably Canadian dollars....so this cost with the low price of these things makes me wonder how much these things cost to make and what profit is being gleaned??
stay tuned

I have had some time to listen to these ISK HD9999's.
You have to remember that these are $79 headphones and $79 only goes so far in this hobby.
I like most like a good deal and for $79 you do get your moneys worth...
That said these are not what I would consider an audiophile headphone, maybe an entry level can for those that dont want to spend bucks and just listen to music not very critically. Again $79.
First impressions are a lasting one to me.
To be honest and blunt they are lacking in the bass end, the control, a little flabby etc...its not un-listenable but if you have a set of really decent headphones you most likely will not be satisfied with these.
They seem to be best with acoustic guitar jazz type of music...and to get the most of these they need to be cranked up. Not very good for low level listening IMO.
They come with two sets of earpads, one thick and one about half as thick, see the above pix.
There are 2 cables, a straight 3M one, and a 1.5 M coiled. Both mini-jack and there is an included 1/4 phone adapter.
The carrying case is stellar for this pricepoint and has a carrying strap as well.
The build quality is really good, even thought they are mostly plastic, it makes for a light weight comfortable experience.
There are no unwanted vibrations or rattles, even played loud..solid here.
On several cuts like Fourplays's In Between the Sheets, "Chant" with the amp cranked up they sound pretty decent.
The mids are ok, but the low end bass is not that well controlled and is just not up to my taste....but again its $79.
On some old tunes like the Doobie Brothers, the presentation is really pretty good...but the dynamic range of these recordings are not that great...so if you stay in that limited range its listenable.
These are not as bad as it might seem but I think most of us out there would want a better set of cans....
I think the drivers in these are the main problem for the bass end...just loose to me.
The sound-stage is surprisingly good...for this price point.
So there ya have it...a good deal for entry level cans for the forgiving listener!!
A good deal...but....

Sennheiser HD700 for $419??!! (https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-700-Headphone/dp/B0070U8KSM/ref=vsbg_hdphn_695064_sr/158-2282905-8553723?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1489547985&sr=1-30)

Sennheiser lower its price due the low sales caused by the bad sound, nit this is a fair price, the HD800 worth price is around $500 the rest is fat.
-
Having owned the Senn HD800 for five years, it is definitely worth $1500 or more for the amazing technology it represents. The upper harmonic detail from the HD800 is unparalleled in my experience, and I have no doubt that you would need a Stax SR009 or Focal Utopia to match it.
Correct, its $1500 worth by the performance is an variable assessment, if one is a Sennheiser worker it would worth even more.
The fact is this phone take only 45 mins to be made:

(It takes a team of production-line workers 45 minutes to put together one pair of HD 800s. Fifty pairs can be made per day, and a total of 5,000 will be built over 12 months.)

Picasso’s “Dove of Peace” Napkin Art
The story goes that Picasso was sitting in a Paris café when an admirer approached and asked if he would do a quick sketch on a paper napkin. Picasso politely agreed, swiftly executed the work, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a rather significant amount of money. The admirer was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you a minute to draw this!” “No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years”

Dale, you have so much experience.
Sennheiser HD800 or HD800S? Is it important to buy the new 800S model over the 800?
-
The HD800S differs in that it has a somewhat warmer tonality owing to higher second order distortion in the lower end. This isn't necessarily a bad thing and will come down to personal taste. Of note however is the older HD800 can be found for cheaper, and there are several mods out there which are reportedly the same or even better than the 800S revision.

Iam a oil painter and hand designer by hobby since teenager, yet I dont consider hp cans art, however I could consider the beauty of a woman's art, the HD800, the new HE1000 and Edition X are even ugly.
I think hp as tools to listen music which can be art.

How about looking at the people who are putting it together? They have to have a job that pays a good wage year in and year out - when you run a business, an employee costs more per hour than the wage they are paid. There are many other people in that business besides the people that assemble it. Also look at the storage, assembly room behind the photos - the rent and the electricity bills run year round. It's not run in a house that one family lives in.

This is true German workers are among the highest paid in the world, I prefer help Chinese workers who work 12 hours a day like me.

As sensitivity is 96dB I would say its an old HifiMan model.

Not exactly a bargain but unusual in the headphone traditional market, HifiMan is offering a free EF6 amp for the first ten HE-6000 buyers, sorry Susvara, detail the amps are B stocks.

HE400i just $249 for fathers day promo valid 1-18June at HifiMan site.
Edition S $149 etc
Hifiman prices on the 400 series are all whacky. The 400i has been $249 for at least a few months now. I'm saying that only because this may not be limited to a father's day sale.
The he400i @ $249 - that's $50 LESS than the 400s. And if you want a refurbished 400i, it'll save you a whopping $20, that's for either the new or OLD version.
It seems the best deal is, as FullRangeMan posted, a new 400i for $249.
I've also noticed a drastic drop in the used prices of Sen hd600/650, possibly related to the price drop of the 400i.

That is good. I'm always a skeptic, however, and I'd ask to make sure they are brand new-no open box, refurbs, b-stock.
There's also some upgrade program on the he1000. As I no nothing about them, I can't really comment

Especially given that Hifiman is renowned for QC problems and design "revisions". It's not a good deal if it fails or breaks.

Speaking of which, Hifiman HE-4xx on Massdrop might be worth a roll of the dice for $175

Any link? I cant acess 4xx offer.

Tempting. I had a pair and loved their sound. Sold them as they weren't the best with my Bottlehead Crack. I'm waiting for the Bottlehead S.E.X and wondering how they'd work with that amp.
-
There are at least three iterations of the 400 (400, 400s, 400i, right?) and I wonder which these are? I assume the most recent, whichever that is.
-
The head belt type is the old original 400, which is a good sound HP.
The drivers should the companion to this model.

I saw this while surfing on my lunch hour. When you get to the 'Order' page, it turns out it's 'refurbished or B-stock' but $339 for the open back version of the Audeze EL-8 (https://www.audeze.com/products/el-8-collection/el-8-open-back) planar magnetic cans still seems like a helluva deal anyway. I've heard them and thought they sounded very good, but like most around-ear headphones (especially with leather or 'pleather' pads), they felt 'clammy'after not too long (YMMV of course). Calling FullRangeMan!
-
Thanks for inform Bro, I seldom use my 400, maybe I not a HP guy.

Hd700 used for $400 Amazon Warehouse Deals...
-
There's been some mention of these FAD Pandora VI on here and I ran across this so I hope an ebay listing is acceptable here (not my listing). If you don't mind rather heavy cans that don't have the greatest "stability" if you move too much (this is NOT a portable model by any means), the sound of these is worth it and build quality sublime. Incredibly detailed and musical presentation with its separate woofer and tweeter structure...and this is the discontinued (renamed) "Pandora" line with the cool fur-lined box and updated pads as well. Google the sterling reviews. Great buy, especially for UK buyers, as they are $700 on Amazon US.

Hi Dale,
When I put velour pads and change the cord to a Copper/Silver shorter lenght in my original HE400 the improvment was minimal to my ears, it is due my source is a PC?
-
Usually, changing earpads changes the sound, and since it started out very neutral, I wonder what the updated pads do to the sound
For the Pandoras, here is what the general consensus is for replacements:
Shure 1540 alcantara pads - Sound is very good, possibly with a very slight reduction in the bass but still very listenable. Comfort is excellent and the best of any that I have tried with nice thick pads that you can wear for hours at a time.
I may try a pair myself..

Hd700 used for $400 Amazon Warehouse Deals...
I liked the 800 but the 700 underwhelmed me (at least at the original price point) both in terms of sound and design (cramped ear cups my main beef). I seem to remember innerfi being not too impressed either.

Looks like I'm gonna find out. Thanks for the tip dB!
Report back please!

Will do! Shipping update - Left Anaheim, CA and stopped (probably overnight) in Shasta, CA. Scheduled delivery end of business day 10/10/2017. I know the hub is in Troutdale, OR so it feasible they could get here Monday....or I'll gnaw my nails until Tuesday!
Then it's.... :drums: :guitar:
-
Damn! FedEx is disappointing today. They were supposed to be delivered today between 10 AM and 1 PM. Got home at 5:20 PM and no headphones. Grrr!
Now 8 PM and I highly doubt they are going to be delivered tonight, oh well.
Anticipation can be a harsh mistress.
-
Fedex delivery at night? until what hours?
-
FRM, They can deliver as late as 7 PM here in my corner of earth (46.2857° N, 119.2845° W).
It's all good, they got here at 11 AM this morning. I am listening right now and am very impressed. Incredibly deep, solid, tight, bass. Reminds me of my old Stax kit. Treble is smooth and extended, can get intense if the music calls for it (First Cut: Saor/Free/News from Nowhere and then into Eistigh Liomsa Sealad/Listen to Me/Saor Reprise by Afro Celt Sound System, album - Volume 1: Sound Magic.
Midrange seems just slightly closed-in or congested (?) but female vocals are sweet.
Currently using my iFi iDSD (orig) for DAC/HP amp and have the volume at 12 o'clock which is ~85-90 dB (just a WAG). Is there such a thing as break-in with a planar magentic headphone? If so how long can I expect it to take?
More as I listen.
Again thanks, dB Cooper! Love getting high quality, high-end gears for a great price. :thumb:
PS - So far the weight and clamping pressure don't bother me at all. Time will tell.
-
Congratulations its a great value HP, I think breakin have a dramatic effect in planars; I received my 400 zero hours breakin the bass was bad, after 50 hours changed alot, dont know if yours was breakin in the factory.
-

I don't think there is any significant time on these as they are new (or newish since they are refurbished). I seriously hope there is some break in as I will enjoy greater performance and better sound.
These are wayyyy better than the ThinkSound On2 I tried for my first pair of cans in over 20 years. I must say the can-scape has changed alot!
-
What model do you bought?
-
Audeze EL-8 open.
-
Hmm I will see it, thanks.
I though it was the LCD2Classic :duh:
-
For $339 US shipped direct from Audeze?! LCD-2 is a kilobuck on the site as of this writing. I'm sure you could find the LCD-2 used for less but then there is shipping.
-
There are two LCD-2's on the Audeze website. One is the normal with the Fazor. The other is a Classic variant priced at $599 that sounds like the old Audeze before the fazor.
-
Again thanks, dB Cooper! Love getting high quality, high-end gears for a great price. :thumb:
Glad to help. I was just googling randomly on my lunch break.
I'm actually drifting away from full size cans- they feel clammy on my ears after awhile (even the 'open' ones, which are mostly 'semi-open' anymore.) Thinking of selling my HD650s (if Massdrop hasn't destroyed the used market wth the 6xx) and getting a pair of the new version of the ER4 IEMs.
Are there any cosmetic flaws? Maybe you just got an open box return. What are you driving them from?
-
There are some light marks around the cable plug holes at the bottom of the ear cups. But had I not had bright light on when I was setting them up I would not have seen them. I hit a reflective angle and caught one mark They are refurbished.
IMO they are nearly pristine and I now want to find a case for them so I can take them on trips occasionally.
My wallet and I have been victims of random Googling in the past.

Hi, I don't understand your query.
This is the product: https://www.audeze.com/products/lcd-collection/lcd2c
If your question was "whether anyone has heard it yet?," then the answer is yes. People did hear it and found it more comfortable than any LCD-2's up to now. This new classic also sounded like the original LCD-2 we were used to before the Fazor implementation. I asked the person who had heard a few of these revisions, and the classic delivers. No fatigue like some may experience with the Fazor.
Of course, I cannot confirm this as I haven't heard any Fazor models or the new Classic. I only have experience with pre-fazor models of LCD-2.2 and LCD-3. The few and recent impressions of this new Classic LCD-2 seems to match my experience with my pre-fazor models.
Hope that helps.
-
Thanks.
SMT there was some versions before the Fazor model.
Rev 1, Rev 2 and maybe other, which had the good sound custumers praised I dont know, but hope Audeze have hit the point with this model mainly in the midbass and mid freq.
-
This not good, all hi-fi loudspeaker claim its neutral and transparent, seems they dont know how made a harmonically rich sound, hope the Classic get it bold, since there is many HPs that have neutral sound or worse clinical sound.

Sennheiser's Black Fri deals suck. Etymotic, deals on electronic earplugs (nothing on earphones). Beyer, nothing (except a big banner on the Germany site, strangely enough). Doesn't look like a good Black Friday/weekend for headphones. Anybody else find any goodies?

The best deal imho is this:
HP-1 Flash Sale (Expires Monday Nov. 27th)
Use discount code NEWS17 to receive 40% off on your HP-1!
I am about to have a rather tall stack of HP-1s assembled. Thus, I will take part in the Black Friday/Cyber Monday madness this year. Don't worry. You won't have to line up outside my door in the wee hours of Friday morning to get this deal. All you have to do is to type in the discount code NEWS17 when you place your order. The sale has started and expires Cyber Monday (Nov. 27th) at 23.59 (MST – GMT-6).
Is there a catch? Yes. There is a catch. Due to parts availability, the fully assembled HP-1s are expected to ship just before Christmas. I apologize for the delay. Then again... Getting an HP-1 for less than $1k is a pretty sweet deal.
Once the discounts are applied, a fully assembled and tested commercial HP-1 that costs over $1600 is priced at $990 before shipping.

Nice!
If I were a headphone guy at all then I would be all over this.

Tried to call Beyer to find out why there is a Black Friday sale on the German (but not the USA) site, thinking maybe I could place a phone order. Offices closed. Guess they take Friday too. Oh well. Didn't need to spend the $$ anyway.

64 Audio has some of their mid level universal iems on sale. I was tempted by the U4-SE's at this price, but the $40 to ship via FEDEX (and anticipated border and duty fees) killed it for me. They retail around $800 CDN, and at this deal they would honestly end up around that point once I factor FX from the USD etc.

I will continue to enjoy my NuForce HEM8's and Noble Savant Wizards for the moment. Or list them for sale and pursue a higher end set that can combine the things these 2 do well but in 1 set!

Sweetwater has Shure 535 in ears for $299. Very tempted.
-
but the $40 to ship via FEDEX (and anticipated border and duty fees) killed it for me.
How much are the Customs taxes?
-
Taxes I would assume would be 13%, as that is the harmonized sales tax in Canada. Border crossing fees (also taxable naturally) range. I have paid $30-$100 depending on the item.
In the end it would prove simpler to just pay the CDN retail plus 13% if I want those phones.
I can wait, and see what comes up used. I was 2nd in line for a used set of 64 Audio U3's on Headfi this week.
-
I dont believe it! only 13% :duh:
News from today, even in China duties are low:

Understandable. They're great. I love mine.
I'm wondering if Shure is coming out with new models. I'm seeing a lot of 'specials' on them.

Not to gym they are hifi HP, a cheap IEM would be suited.

Hey Now,
For the gym? I can recommend:
Zircon Rock IEM (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01MQU1S94/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511613931&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=zircon+rock&psc=1)

A bargain at these prices for the sound you get.

Now the 2nd batch of these headphones are on sale and they have remedied the few QC issues that the first batch had. as far as the SQ is concerned they are probably the best headphones for the money on the plant. definitely better than most Hifimans, better resolution, bass, sound stage than any dynamic i have ever heard, basically an LCD-2 in disguise (actually i suspect that they have the same innards as LCD-2 as not many manufacturers make these anyway.)
i am posting this because they are on sale for 250 and it is my opinion that these headphones are worth it even at $600. at 250 they are money very well spent.
https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=120&cp_id=12001&cs_id=1082707&p_id=16050&seq=1&format=2
on a side note: the presentation very different than Senn 650 so it is difficult to compare them, i think you need both of these phones in your life.
-

Yeah, too much opportunity for something to happen in a gym situation, I'd use something I didn't have a lot of $ into in case something happened to it or I lost it.
-
I saw someone mentioned Audeze, but I didn't see a reference to the LCD-X.
These are currently $1199 - down from $1699. They call it their Creator Edition or something like that. It's all the same except you don't get the little pelican case.
Don't know how long the special lasts though.
And on another topic, Violectric is having a 25% off sale through the 29th.

Hmm ... Wonder how much different this is from the Massdrop HE-4XX?
-
i would love for other people with expereice with this headphone to weigh in. on my part i made my opinion clear. other than Senn HD6XX and this Monolith no other headphone uinder 600 is worth buying for hifi. i think this monolith is better than all hifimans and every beyerdynamic. i only singled out HD6xx (which is the same as HD650) because it is only 200 dollars and it has such beautiful presentation with any moderately powerful head amp. both are extremely comfortable too. this monolith is a must have. the pads on it rival $1000 headphones. they are not real leather but so what? they are incredibly comfortable, feel good, good isolation and sound perfect.
-
Hmm ... Wonder how much different this is from the Massdrop HE-4XX?
the one that i owned had some cosmetic imperfections and i returned it and bought a nre pair at 250 bucks. as soon as i get it i will do these mods as well. i dint do them onm my 1st pair just because i wanted to return them

I've owned the sennheiser hd600, hd650, and hifiman 400i. I like the hifiman the best. But honestly at the price they are all selling for, you can't go wrong. A year or so ago, these were much more expensive and people loved them.
-
I dont understand as HD600/650 released 1997 yet are in the market today and at full price, they are senile 20 yo products, I suppose while sales do not drop they will be avaliable.

i dont know what you mean by "full price" i know that 3 years ago i couldnt find HD650 under 400 but now it is 200 with warraty and everything on massdrop. as far as the sound is concerned i think they sound better than most other headphones so what does it matter if they were released in 1920 even?

Indeed SQ is a personal taste, I didnt see Sennheiser made in Germany at $200 it woul be a fair price.
-
Do the current 650's use the same driver technology, and produce the same level of distortion as the 1997 model?
Dont know it. Do you know is the HD600/650/700 use the same 40mm driver?
-
did you guys understand that the point of my post was Monolith 1060 planar headphones and I only brought up HD650 as a side note?
-
HD650 is the headphone people love to hate (as evidenced by this thread); even when they have no direct personal experience of it, that doesn't prevent some from having strong opinions of it. Based on nothing but somebody else's opinion (which may or may not have much validity) in some cases, but whatever.
Its success speaks for itself... How many tech products (especially in the fickle, 'wonderful today, trash tomorrow' audio world) can claim a 20 yr track record?
BTW 1997 was the 580. 600 came later and 650 a number of years after that. The 'gist' of the design may have originated with the 580 but there many design detail and sonic differences between them. The quality of the original design is why it has been so successful for so long. 600 and 650 do not use the same driver. (Tyll H did a comparison at innerfi; the plots look quite different). BTW this line just entered its fourth iteration, with the 660S. Is it better? I don't know; I lack the psychic ability to judge audio components I haven't heard. I suspect it's probably not too shabby. It's definitely competitive in it's price bracket, if past history is any indication; if you don't like it, there are plenty of alternatives. If there's one thing that galls me more than presenting opinion as fact, it's repeating somebody else's opinion and presenting it as fact.

Just to make things interesting (and confusing), now there's the Sennheiser HD58x from Massdrop for $149 (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-sennheiser-hd-58x-jubilee-headphones?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ccu_Massdrop_x_Sennheiser_HD_58X_Jubilee_Headphones&referer=6VX3Y4&mode=guest_open&iterableCampaignId=218658&iterableTemplateId=312192). Some similar traits of both the 580 and 650 (but probably has plastic baffle plates instead of the carbon fiber ones in the 650) and 150 ohm drivers. Can't see the show without a program...

Great, Iam previewing an HD8XX.
-
The Focal Elex drop currently going looks pretty sweet! The Elear remind me of HD650's but with more punch and top end, so these should be interesting

Hm, torn. I like my 599s more than the 650, thanks to the more forward and absolutely gorgeous midrange. Can't tell where this 580 falls on the spectrum...

Nice tip, but beware, their website says it is on sale until Jan 20th, not 29th.
-
Hey Tom!
Your are correct sir!! Jan 20th!! Thats what happens when your 69 and the 0 and 9 key are close together!! Ha!
I can vouch for the Mainline, its the best amp I have ever built or listened "with"...took me a week to assemble and it worked the first time...been doing DIY stuff for years on tubes and SS...this one is a real gem.
Everyonce in awhile "Doc" has a sale....if anyone is thinking of doing a tube amp and wants a really great amp, this is deinitely one to look at. I came close to buying a Woo Audio WA6SE, which I still admire but along came a sale and $300 delta.
and the fun of smelling solder and flux burning again!\

At $387 they're a steal. With a $59 Magni you'd have a killer setup at less than $450. IMHO these competed well against the Focal Elears. These replaced my long owned HD650s. Hifiman baffles me as a company. Copy only the outside design (big wooden cups) of an old legend, use a completely different driver design (planar vs Sony's bio-cellulose), call it ostensibly HE-R10, then sell it for $5500.

Still cheaper than a legit OG R-10, which sells for $14K if you can find one :o
