Stacey Kent, "Raconte-moi..."

2010 endearing release, an all-French album from the American Jazz vocalist revisits great classics of the French musical heritage with songs by Barbara, Paul Misraki, Georges Moustaki, Henri Salvador, Michel Jonasz, Keren Ann and Benjamin Biolay, and also showcases original work by talented young songwriters like Claire Denamur, Camille D'avril and Emilie Satt. Stacey Kent bridges the divide between genres, elegantly and daintily stamping her own personal hallmark on this shining album. Produced, arranged and accompanied (sax) by her hubby, British saxophonist Jim Tomlinson.

I'll spin an H just for you ...

Billie Holiday, "The Essence of Billie Holiday", a collection of songs from mid-30's to mid 40's (I think).

Speaking of Kenny Barron . . do hasten to get a hold of "Live at Fat Tuesday's" on the Enja label.  He's fronting a quintet this time out with 70 minutes of playing time some of which is flat out balls to the wall burning up the joint!  Sample "Lunacy", "Sand Dune" or "Something for Ramone".  The latter is more mellow, but not by much, with a tight groove.

Thanks for the tip.  It looks like it's out of print.  I'll look for it the next time I'm at the used record store.

The tunes range from sweet, as in "Trued Right", or abstract bluesy, as on "Arborization", to clever rhythm-shifting in the phantastic and genre-crossing "The Kreuzberg Variations" to powerplay on "Comeling". There is madness to be heard, yet controlled or contained, and joined with some more universal feelings as melancholy and tenderness. The variation is great, as are the compositions, almost equally divided among the members of the trio.

The line-up is unusual too (check on the "Sax Piano Drums Trio" in the right column to get to know more of them), yet one that works extremely well because it offers harmonic, rhythmic and a wealth of solo opportunities, while keeping the improvisational freedom of a small ensemble.

In any case, great stuff, and not to be missed.

Apparently they are in Business. They are a German publication and apparently they are into other things beside Jazz. They are very into Blues.(Which is related to Jazz) I'll try to get that record (or CD) from cduniverse.com OK I just checked they have it but it's cost is $21.15 +postage. That is kind of steep for a CD.I checked with AMAZON they have it in CD form It is $17.99 +3.99 shipping. So either way you are going to pay over $20 for this CD. If you can find a used Phonograph Record in good shape you will be better off. (But that is few and far between)
