How many of you collect concert videos (DVD or BR)? I do, and I am starting to setup a concert library on my Synology NAS. I am currently using an nVidia Shield with a variation of Kodi (SPMC) as the player. I thought a big thread on specifically concert videos would be really interesting as audiophiles I am sure are into this kind of thing.
First might I suggest starting out your initial posts like:
1) top 3 favorite videos you own
2) method used to playback with subpoints for software(if any), player(if any), server(if any), format
-
I have a significant collection mostly dvd. Currently using a new source, my intel 7 custom computer using VLC through usb to dac, bypassing soundcard on computer. Haven't tried soundcard on computer but read the intel 7 chip is pretty good.
Can't limit my favorites to just 3 so I'll list the ones I listen to on regular basis.
AC/DC live in Donington
Scorpians - Amazonia
Scorpians- Unplugged
U2 - Elevation
Rush- Exit Stage Left
Kitaro- Yakushiji
Led Zeppelin- DVD
Led Zepplelin- Song Remains the Same
Tangerine Dream - Live in Lisbon
Jarre - Live in Monaco
Uriah Heep - Live in Armenia
Dream Theatre - Luna Park
Judas Priest - Epitath
Ultravox- Return to Eden
Iron Maiden - Rio
Santana - Sacred Fire
Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco
Blue Man Group - The Complex
ELO - Zoom
ZZ Top - Live in Germany 1980
Fleetwood Mac - The Dance
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up
-
I used to collect concert videos years ago, but sadly have zero in Blu Ray.
The only one I am lusting after is the one that does not exist: Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii on Blu Ray. Adrian Maben's 35mm copy was transferred to HDCAM SR and restored a few years ago now. The B&W footage of the band slurping oysters and beer in Paris was scanned and restored in full 2K resolution, and there have already been screenings of the whole thing in Paris. Apparently Roger Waters is in possession of the original multi-tracks, so a proper stereo and surround mix is absolutely possible. This should have happened already.
The so-called Director's Cut was a travesty. This film deserves a proper treatment once and for all.
-
I have Pink Floyd - Live in Pompeii, cd if that is of interest to you? 8)

Ohhh... I love these threads!
Admittedly, I don't have very many, but the ones I'm passionate about are:
Chris Botti - Live in Boston [Blu-Ray]
Roger Waters - The Wall, Live in Berlin (this is a bucket list item for Floyd fans) [DVD]
David Gilmour - Live at Royal Albert [Blu-Ray] (video quality is amazing)
Diana Krall - Live in Paris [DVD] (great quality)
"Crossroads Guitar Festival" - frankly, all of them are awesome. [DVD]
JJ Grey - Brighter Days [DVD] I would trade all of my concert videos for this one. I love his music
Adele - Live at Royal Albert [DVD] (I'm not an Adele fan, but this concert is good quality and just FUN to watch!
Harry Connick Jr. - Live on Broadway [DVD] Again, lots of fun.
The DVDs I use a PS3, and the Blu-Ray I use a PS4

Excellent thread idea! I'm a big fan of concert videos or audio only albums. I just haven't had a chance to add so many yet.
I store my files as mkv on my server. The server is a Lenovo thinkserver TS140 which I have in a different room. This server has a small formfactor and is pretty silent for being a server - it takes 4-5 hardrives depending in config. Highly recommended and it (or similar ones) can often be found on sale for cheap.
I run openmediavault as the nas software which is free and can be highly customized since its linux based and let's you run a lot of stuff in the background including plex, emby, etc.
Don't let the Linux portion scare you - it's as easy to install and set up as installing windows since everything is ran from a graphical user interface.
I use a raspberry pi2 as the streamer running OSMC (kodi). The hdmi out goes to the screen and I use an USB dac to connect the audio to the system. I have a a chromecast and a firestick in the house too which I can stream videos to via plex or emby but I prefer the rpi with kodi as the player since it gives me more options since I don't have to use HDMI and can use any DAC/amp (at least for stereo recordings) instead of using a HT receiver. The one small thing with splitting the audio and video like this is that it requires some simple tweaking to get the lip sync correct.
As a side note, one can also send youtube videos etc straight to kodi from the phone plus I added shairport sync so I can stream audio services (spotify, tidal) as well from my phone, not to mention I also have it set up in one system to do active cross over.
-
I started the thread because, while I've seen some talk of concert videos, I hadn't really seen much of a thread dedicated to such a topic. Once I got my home theater system dialed in to sound and look really good, I started picking up concert videos and realized that I really love that format as it puts you at the venue if done well. I go to a LOT of concerts, but being able to see whomever/whenever/where-ever you want is really awesome.
My top pics at this moment are:
1) Dark Tranquility - where death is most alive [dvd]
2) Gojira - The Flesh Alive [blu ray]
3) Cream - Live in the Royal Albert Hall [blu ray]
4) Opeth - Live in the Royal Albert Hall [blu ray]
5) Steven Wilson - Get All You Deserve [blu ray]
6) Steven Wilson - Drive Home [blu ray]
7) Porcupine Tree - Aenestitize [blu ray]
8) Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere [dvd]
9) Nine Inch Nails - Beside You in Time [blu ray] Actually this is particularly a great one as it is recorded in various venues and you can actually here the difference in the venue's acoustics on the disc.
I probably have 60-70 concerts at least. It takes a long time to rip to NAS, but it is fun to be able to sit back and choose a concert from your remote and then skip to another concert. I haven't even watched but 40% of my collection so far.
I have a bunch of Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Metallica, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Testament, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck and slew of heavier metal as well.
-
P.S. I recently got the nVidia Shield. It is really a killer piece of kit! Its a lot more powerful than most Apple TV, Android TV, piTV or Linux type boxes. It was spec'ed for gamers and thus has really good graphics. Its super flexible and with SPMC (kodi branch) will do 4K video and full HD audio passthrough, so its moderately future proof. It runs about $199 in the US, sometimes on sale for $170. I am using it to stream my videos from my NAS and even use it to play my 6000+ CDs and Hi-rez to my home theater.

I started >> THIS one << (https://www.hawthorneaudio.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3816) a few years back. It didn't take off very well, but there's a few good recommendations.

Ok, this isn't going to well. I would have thought more audiophiles would get into concert dvds/brs. Oh well, for those of us that do, I will add a couple of good ones (to me atleast).
At the Gates - The Flames of the End DVD
(great concert, the documentary was a bit too long, was a reunion concert of sorts, around the time of At War with Reality absolutely dig the performance though!)
Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago
(one of the first DVDs I ever got and still love this raw emotion he was able to convey with his voice)
The White Stripes - Under the Blackpool Lights (amazing! best way to see what Jack is all about before things became pretentious)
-
Purchased Rush- R40 Live Blu-ray today.
Listening to it now using the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 48 khz 5.0 to 5.7 Mbps track. As far as audio goes I think this is the best I've ever heard, however I'm still analyzing whether its better than Clockwork Angels. :smoke:

The White Stripes - Under the Blackpool Lights (amazing! best way to see what Jack is all about before things became pretentious)
Saw them live a few times around that time frame so this one got me curious. Did a quick search and there is actually one version that showed up in youtube. Quality not the best (360p) but good enough to get a preview.
https://youtu.be/UDEJoFptxIs
Will probably buy this one to add to the collection. How's the audio quality on the disc?

This concert has very good bass heavy resolution and IMO you need a system that can resolve the bass. I'm listening with my multi-channel pre in Neo:6 music mode. At the spl level I have it set at 12 o'clock on the dial my amp shut down 3 times from over-heating. Plus I have speakers that can handle the heavy bass. 8)

I'm surprised more folks haven't posted here..
I have been collecting concert videos for some time. Best way to see a concert. No crowds, better access, less wasted time between sets.
Not saying one should avoid concerts. Live is great.
Sometimes it is the only way to see some great artists.
I have some favs:
All of the crossroad guitar festivals
Several BB King
Muddy Waters
Eagles Farewell Tour
AC/DC at Donington
Joe Bonamassa at Red Rocks
Rolling Stones
Dianna Krall Rio
Just to name a few.
Watching on a 120 inch screen with decent sound and a trio of subs works quite nicely.
I'm using an Oppo 103D for playback.
-
Ok, this isn't going to well. I would have thought more audiophiles would get into concert dvds/brs.
They don't like that nasty screen in the middle of the listening stage, that's why.
-
Don't have a lot of concert videos, but of the few I have favorites are:
Jeff Beck Live @ Ronnie Scott's - br
Santana Presents - Blues @ Montreux - the disc with Clarence Gatemouth Brown. Great performance roughly a year before he passed. -dvd
Bela Fleck & the Flecktones - Live @ the Quick- a must for jazz fans - dvd
& an extra - Cream Live @ Royal Albert Hall - dvd
Old Panasonic BR player ...
-
They don't like that nasty screen in the middle of the listening stage, that's why.
That is why I use an acoustically transparent screen and my speakers are behind, eq'd for the screen loss (only the highest freqs really).
-
Now you're sounding like a videophile. That's beyond the scope of the average audiophile.
-
It was the easiest way to put a big screen in my modest sized room. I like how even without a picture it keeps you from getting visually distracted from the speakers. You can't see them.
-

Will probably buy this one to add to the collection. How's the audio quality on the disc?
I think the audio is pretty decent. It shows off the raw bluesiness well.
-
Watching Riverside - Reality Dream DVD. Really good. PQ pretty good, angles are awesome, looks like a smokey venue from wider angles. SQ and performance are pretty awesome. I got to see them live last fall and super glad I did! I was so in awe over Piotr's guitar that I looked it up and ordered it from Poland! Before the guitar arrived (custom made ~6mos) it was announced that Piotr died of a cardiac arrest after attending a show with Mike Portnoy.
-
Not giving up on this thread yet. Watching Amon Amarth - Wrath of the Norsemen. It apparently has over 7 hours of footage. I am not watching all of that, but the first disc is a 2 hour concert with 23 songs or something like that. PQ is a bit dated, not terrible, just not what you expect on a more modern release. SQ is pretty good, a bit too compressed as it always, but the performance is top notch.
P.S. I saw them like in February, it was a show that I had modest expectations and they really blew me away.

Good someone mentioned Jeff Beck(Live at Ronnie Scott's) excellent
Eagles Live in Melbourne Tour I superb video and audio
Fleetwoodmac The Dance is good also
First two are excellent I use a 128" studiotek 100 so that helps on the visual with vc rs-600 projector
audio side bryston power...28s 7's ect with an 1812 sub so it's show Time.

Back in 1990, Roger Waters put on a show in Berlin. Not just a "concert", but the single most epic piece of musical showmanship I've ever seen.
I can't fathom the logistics to pull something like this off. Especially a quarter century ago.
The stage was what.. a mile wide? Complete with a convoy of military vehicles going across stage, audience participation, an all star cast... it has it all.
Except the video quality we've come to expect now days. :(
Here's part one of the video: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xjy3n7_roger-waters-the-wall-live-in-berlin-1990-part-1-of-2_music
Here's the DVD album cover. This is my single most prized of all DVDs I own.

-
Now I have to buy that one. I have Roger Waters - the Wall on blu-ray. The David Gilmour one Blu-ray is a DVD on blu-ray. The PQ isn't even DVD quality imo.
-
Yes... dude... I can't even explain. You have to be in the mindset to get past the video quality. The sheer scope of this video is mind blowing. It will make EVERY concert you've seen from your very first one, to the last one you'll ever see, seem bland and boring in comparison.
I would love to know the logistics behind it. How many people were involved in the making of it, what did tickets cost, how many audience members, etc..etc...
So epic....
And I mean "Epic" in the true sense of the word, not the meaning all the kids use now-a-days.
If they did a true Bluray remaster, I'd consider giving a large sum of money to own it. Maybe even a body part.
-
Ok, so now I'm all excited about this DVD again. I did a little digging. Seems the "staging" of the event costs $10,000,000 to build. :o
Read: http://www.rogerwaters.org/about_berlin.html

10MN?!
-
Ten Million to build. yes.
-
Journey live in Manila . Dean castronovo the ex drummer now sings three songs on this DVDs and he sounds awesome.
-
I love concert vids, have many of the ones mentioned, would add these:
James Taylor at Beacon Theater- SOTA video and audio
Lee Ritenour Overtime Blu-ray best technical quality I've seen/heard, good smooth jazz
Springsteen at hammersmith odeon 1975- the best Boss dvd (Born to Run album live, plus more!), but only available as part of the born to run boxed set
Peter Gabriel Secret World Live great music and sound, mediocre video
Concert for George
Stop Making Sense
I have them as MKVs (as well as my music) on a Synology NAS wired through the router with cat 6 to my main 2 systems. I play the vid files using Oppo 93 and 103D, audio to DACS. Main video screen is a 55" last generation Panny plasma.
I have a 1 TB 2.5" external usb HD on which I have converted about 100 mkv movie files to mp4 for travelling. I travel with it and a Roku 2 (usb input) to play them over hotel room tvs.
-
I'm getting more into concert vids as I think some may work really well for a speaker demo, my speaker does a great job with simple 2-mic concert recordings... I've had Phish fans get up and start dancing, saying it's just like they were there... :green:
If anyone has any vids they think are demo quality material I'd love to hear about them!
So far I'm about to order Bela Fleck "Live at the Quick" as I have the CD and Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" as I love the TH... would like recs on Phish, Widespread and the Dead as well... I'm not super into jam bands but have seen Widespread and Phish a bunch... Dead was slightly before my time but they were great.
-
You won't be disappointed with the "Live At The Quick" DVD, it's a killer. :thumb: Nothing like jazz banjo & bassoon to soothe the savage music fan. :D

So on your suggestion I picked it up. I am watching it now, almost finished. I am working from home and have it on, so I am not watching it closely, but it is an amazing concert! Old school 4:3 video format, but that is about all I'd knock. There is a lot of cameos aren't there? I even think Bryan Adams plays at one point.
I like the guy who leads the backup vocals on Comfortably Numb, that is an interesting harmony. Just looked it up, that was Van Morrison. I thought I recognized the voice, but didn't recognize the person. And yeah they had a massive guest list of tons of actors and singers/musicians of the day. I wasn't paying close enough attention but I did think I saw Sinead O'Connor.
-
Guy's
I think James Taylor Live from Beacon Theater NYC is a great Video. It is The first 100% full digital DVD. Recorded in SD-SDI and AES 5.1 surround sound. It was recorded on one of the trucks i used to work on and i believe it is in the Guinness book of work records for the 1st 100% full live digital transmission done. It was produced for WNET ch 13 PBS.
Also Dave & Tim in NYC at Radio City Music Hall in Full Hi-Rez Audio and Video.
Check them out they are very well done.

Awesome, I'm glad you like it!
Yes, that is Bryan Adams.

A couple more of my favorites:
Neil Young: Heart of Gold
Eric Clapton: 1 more car, 1 more rider
Loreena Mckennitt: Nights from the Alhambra
Peter Gabriel: Secret World
Hall and Oates: Live at the Troubadour
John Mayer: Where the Light Is
Bonnie Raitt: Road Tested
ZZ Top: Live from Texas
Yanni: Tribute
Steve Winwood: Soundstage
-
I love concert vids. Maybe only reason I want a high rez TV. Second PG "Secret World", but the "Growing UP" tour maybe even better. PG's daughter is a little weak on her vocals, but the rest is first rate. The opening track will make you weep. (here comes the flood) it's incredible. Totally solo. PG at piano and voice.
Blue Sky with the Blind Boys is also fantastic. I could live without the song about the Bonovos though. A little corny.
the Floyds, "Pulse" from 04 is pretty awesome. It's a bit visually over the top. Do you really need lasers and pyro? but musically as good or better than every.
-
Another of my favorites not mentioned so far - Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour '74
The man could play with the best.
-

I lived next to the Kennedy Center, when Pink Floyd came for the dark side premier , I watched their roadys come trucks in and out from eleven pm at night till the concert at 8:00 pm the next day, the trucks i believe were parked under the center indoors, when the concert started they still were not done wiring the
Main hall, I had floor seats mid way back and center, every body was tripping......... on wires, the bundles where up and down the isles and down through the seats too. a few seats were removed from both back corners to make room for the Quad speaker arrangement. and the sound man was all the way rear and center.
he had at least 3 assistants, the Kennedy center main hall is one of the best in the world.
I am pretty sure I remember buying champagne at the concession, many hippy's came in tuxedos and tennis shoes, very peaceful crowd, the ushers always looked away at the right times, the seats were divine, chandeliers everywhere, wonderful people.
That sounds fantastic! :thumb:

Thanks Mag, hadn't thought to look for anything from them. :thumb: Saw them open for Traffic in '74, almost no one knew who they were. As might be expected for the time, prior to and at the start of their first song the cries were for "rock & roll, we want Traffic". After the first song, mostly stunned silence. After the 2nd, 'cheers' and all was good with the world. Can't remember for sure what the first song was, but want to say Matty Groves. Their 'Live' album, also titled "A Moveable Feast", is recorded from that tour. Sandy Denny was stunning.

Thanks, I grew up with folk music but I don't normally listen to it. I consider it my dad's music, what I can expect to hear when I go to visit.
I have to say some folk rock songs have a creative element I don't find with other genres. I've had 'Light of Day' on repeat for the last hour or so, this song just does it for me.

Hans Zimmer- Live in Prague, 2016
Audio: Excellent - Lpcm stereo, Dolby Atmos
Video: 1080p High Definition, excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: movie soundtracks, orchestra
Comments:
Listened in Lpcm stereo piggybacked through external dac thru digital dac in pre-amp. Also tried Dolby Atmos, found Lpcm to have more organic quality, bass more solid. My system not set up for Dolby Atmos so may out perform Lpcm on said system.
Audio in digital stereo mode did not clip the display, thus meeting the THX standard. IMO music was complex, perhaps tedious at times, but musicianship was top notch and some tracks stellar. Lady on the 5 string bass hit some really low notes which if you have the speakers for add a wow factor.

Ted Nugent- Motor City Mayhem blu ray
Audio: excellent, Lpcm, dts HD, Dolby Digital 5.1
Video: excellent, 1080i High Definition widesrceen
Performance: Very Good not his best IMO, would have preferred a different set list with my favorite song of his, Hibernation.
Genre: Hard Rock
Comments:
Audio constantly clipped display thus not meeting THX standard. Would have preferred Ted's guitar to be a bit louder so that I could follow his playing. However the sound was balanced and the best recording I have heard coming from Ted Nugent.

Audio: excellent, LPCM stereo, Dolby HD Master
Video: very good, remastered
Performance: stellar, if a fan I'd say this is definitely worth having
Genre: Progressive Rock
I received my copy in the mail and I have to comment on this concert.
IME this is one of the best concerts I have heard. For those who have the Cd- Crime of the Century, re-mastered you know how good a recording this is. Well the blu ray blows that away, sounds like you are at the concert. The concert starts out with 'School' and I gotta say when the guy jumps on the piano it sounds like a real piano.
Even has the song 'Fool's Overture' which was missing from my collection.
-
Emerson Lake & Palmer- Pictures at and Exhibition 2010, special edition dvd
Audio: excellent, pcm mono recording
Video: excellent 4:3
Performance: excellent
Genre: progressive rock
Comments: This is a excellent video of the December 1970 performance. However during the performance the video frequently goes into psychedelic graphics which can be annoying when you really want to see this historic event.
Sound quality is excellent with this mono recording. There are a few flaws in the performance, I also have the cd version which I am quite familiar, which is played perfect, but I believe that was a later date performance.

Tea Party- The Reformation Tour, Live in Australia - blu ray 2012
Audio: dts HD 5.1 master audio
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: Moroccan-roll rock
Comments: Concert opens with my Tea Party favorite 'The River' and a few other rockers. Then IMO wanes into boring songs. That's just me, I suspect with more listens the set list will grow on me. Hardcore Tea Party fans may find nothin' wrong with set list.
Would have preferred lead guitar to be more forward sounding, as it is the band sounds balanced. The lack of forwardness in guitar may be due to having the dts-5.1 down-mixed to pcm stereo.

Cream- Royal Albert Hall, 2005 Blu ray
Audio: excellent- Lpcm, dts HD master audio 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: Blues Rock
Comments: This historic concert video happened May 2,3,5,6 2005. The video pieces together songs from one of the four concerts into a set list.
The 3 geezers could still play, in top form.
One has to remember this is the band that must be credited with pioneering the concert format for blues rock, hard rock, heavy metal, back in '67, for many bands that followed in their footsteps.
IMO the reason this band broke up is they received heavy criticism at the time because their music, style, broke the mold. They were scoffed at by the media. There may have been internal personal conflicts within the band. But this shaming from the media probably was their undoing.

Dire Straits - aLCHEMY - Live
Audio - good to very good, maybe excellent in spots, remastered, PCM & DTS HD 5.1 Master
Video - good to very good, remastered, 16:9
Performance - very good to excellent
Genre - rock
Notes: a very interesting disc in many respects. Included with one of the two days the concert was performed, the day shown selected by Mark Knopfler, are two live cuts from a local British show of the day, Tunnel of Love ('80), and Sultans of Swing ('78) from the Old Grey Whistle Test. Also a BBC documentary done in 1980 on the band with interviews & live show clips that shows the impact their success had on the band between the '78 release of their first album and their 3rd, Making Movies (58 min). If you are a fan of their music it's a worthwhile addition to the library imo. There is also a 320 bit MP3 download available with the Blu-ray, which still works as I'm listening to it now.

John Fogerty- The Long Road Home, in Concert 2005, dvd 2006
Audio: Dolby Stereo, Dolby 5.1, DTS
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: Roots Rock
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Comment: Dolby stereo sounded the best, dts track lacked transparency. Toe tapping music through whole concert.

Blue Man Group- Audio, dvd 1999
Audio: Excellent- Dolby 5.1 DTS 5.1
Video: Okay, not a concert, just still shot videos
Performance: Excellent
Genre: Instrumental pop ( sounds like Krautrock to me)
Rating: 4 out of 5
Comments: Very heavy on the drums and percussion, and real joy if you're into that kinda thing. A few songs border on boring, slow tempo, which is why I gave it 4 out of 5. A couple of songs IMO are a drum/percussion paradise, faster tempo, like Klein Mandelbrot. Caution when raising volume control is advised.
Not a concert video! Just 15 audio tracks with picture attached.

April Wine- Live in London 1981, dvd release 2008
Audio: okay, Dolby stereo
Video: okay, 4:3
Performance: Very Good
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3 out of 5
Comments: I've heard April Wine songs on the radio over the years and only have OOwatanite in my collection.
The band played well in this 'Nature of the Beast tour' concert and had a good hard rock sound that didn't sound commercial to me. The sound quality is lacking in transparency and articulation but didn't sound compressed. Video was okay with frequent interview interruptions during show.

Kitaro- daylight, moonlight, Live in Yakushiji 2001, dvd 2002
Audio: excellent, dts 5.1, Dolby 5.1, Dolby stereo
Video: excellent
Genre: electronic/new age
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: Listened in dts, audio was excellent. Recorded in HD audio and digitally re-mastered. Kitaro is a talented musicians who can play several instruments. I suppose for westerners it takes a few listens to appreciate his style. I began listening to Kitaro sometime in the late '90.

Joe Satriani- Satchurated, Live in Montreal, Blu ray 2012
Audio: excellent, pcm stereo 48k/24 bit, Dolby TrueHD 7.1
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: instrumental hard rock, blues rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: Well done production, small intimate venue with good acoustics. Camera angles constantly changing angles but not a hack job like some other concert videos.

Gary Moore: Live at Montreux 2010, blu ray release 2011
Audio: excellent, Lpcm stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, dts HD master audio
Video: excellent
performance: excellent
Genre: hard rock, blues rock
Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5
Comments: This blu ray is a historic record of a great guitar player and here he shows he can play hard rock, with a mixture of blues rock. Camera angles change constantly but not a hack job. Show is hard rocking but loses tempo with some blues rock songs.

Motorhead: Clean Your Clock, blu ray & cd 2016
Audio: excellent, pcm stereo, dts HD master stereo/5.1, dolby stereo/5.1
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: hard rock
Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5
Comments: Motorhead recordings are usually crap, not this one, which is now Motorhead's reference recording. Still can't make out the song lyrics though, and don't like the short song format.

Judas Priest: Epitaph 2012, Blu ray 2013
Audio: excellent, pcm stereo uncompressed 48kHz/24 bit, dts HD 5.1
Video: excellent
Performance; excellent
Genre: heavy metal
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: Richie Faulkner makes his debut replacing KK Downing. Glenn Tipton scrambled to find a replacement for KK Downing, knowing his abilities on the guitar. KK Downing vs Glenn Tipton who is better? Tipton obviously knew he had big shoes to fill.
The concert Rocks from beginning to end, with you are there sound. Have several JP albums none match the sound quality of this blu ray concert. Battle Cry concert lacks energy compared to Epitaph.

Aerosmith: You Gotta Move, dvd 2004
Audio: very good, pcm stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1
Video: good 4:3
Performance: excellent
Genre: hard rock
Rating: 4 out of 5
Comments: Frequent band interviews during concert footage is very annoying. Bonus Feature song 'Rats in the Cellar' is one smoking guitar solo. Set list has good songs from start to finish. Band plays at slower tempo than they did in the '70's but it works.

Dream Theater: Live in BudoKan 2004, blu ray release 2011
Audio: excellent, Lpcm stereo, dts HD master audio 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: progressive metal, power rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: 2 hours and 47 minutes of power rock, you'll need a break after this ones over.
Bass player uses a 6 string bass to give you and idea on what to expect. I don't quite understand this style of rock or the song structure but was able to listen to it.

Metallica- Quebec Magnetic, blu ray 2009
Audio: Outstanding, uncompressed pcm 2.0, dts-Hd Master Audio 2.0/5.1
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: Listened in uncompressed pcm, audio has exceptional transparency, cranked the volume fairly loud, clear as a bell. Metallica put on one hell of a show playing for 2 hours and 15 minutes to a packed audience.

Steven Wilson Home Invasion

Europe- Live at Sweden Rock, blu ray 2013
Audio: outstanding, Lpcm, digital dolby 5.1
Video: excellent
Performance: excellent
Genre: hard rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: One of the best recordings I have heard in Lpcm. First time I've listened to Europe other than the song Final Countdown and I like their style of rock. Rocker songs that piqued my interest Riches to Rags, Scream of Anger, No Stone Unturned, In the Future to Come, Final Countdown.

Black Sabbath- The End, Birmingham, Blu ray +cd
Audio: Excellent, Lpcm, dts-HD Master Audio
Video: Excellent, IMO however did not like the short edits of jumping from one shot to the next. Like you would like to watch Geezer Butler play the bass, but camera will change angles instead of focusing on his playing.
Performance: Very Good
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 4 out of 5
Comments: Audio is very good. The bass is very heavy when cranked and Tony Iommi's guitar seems less in the forefront than I would have liked. When compared to Gathered in Their Masses IMO that concert is a better performance and better recording.

Bon Jovi- Live at Madison Square Garden, Blu ray 2009
Audio: Excellent, Dolby True HD 5.1/2.0
Video: Excellent
Performance: Excellent
Genre: hard rock, pop rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: Not really a Bon Jovi fan but like their song Blaze of Glory and now Keep the Faith. I cranked the song Keep the Faith and the sound is just incredible, very live like.

Oscar Peterson Trio: The Berlin Concert
Audio: Excellent, PCM, Dolby 5.1, DTS
Video: Excellent, supposed to be 16:9, but could only manage 4:3 on my copy. Mislabled ? Mis-mfg'd ?
Performance: Excellent, live show from 1985
Genre: Jazz
Notes: Not only does this concert showcase Oscar's skill, but also shows what a consummate bassist Niels-Henning Oersted Pedersen was. If your a fan of Oscar's music I don't think you'll be disappointed. Maybe it was just the song selection for this show, but I don't recall realizing how much honkey-tonk/boogie woogie Oscar put in his presentations.

Listening to Chili Peppers Live at Slane Castle. My Ex-girlfriend usually listened to this concert dvd and I got to like it, even went to their Concert when they were here. Also have Chili Peppers- Off the Map dvd, which is also very good, perhaps a more refined performance and slightly faster tempo. Both are very good recordings but Slane Castle makes me think of my time with her.

Love collecting concert films! Got started off with the Grateful Dead boxset...All the Years Combine. My favorite in the series is Downhill From Here, nothing like Brent Mydland vocals or keys.
My other Top 3 are as follows in no particular order:
1) Dave Chappelle's Block Party
2) The Band's Last Waltz
3) Led Zeppelin
Also shout out to the Boiler Room youtube series particularly Mala London https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hkgik4edDpY&t=3357s

Gov't Mule- Bring on the Music, blu ray, April 2018
Audio: Excellent, pcm stereo, Dolby True Digital, dts HD 5.1
Video: Excellent, camera editing good doesn't change angles in 2 seconds or less.
Performance: excellent
Genre: Blues Rock
Rating: 4 out 5
Comments: A well made blu ray concert. I however was disappointed with the setlist. Like I have Gov't Mule CD, so I was hoping for similar instead the concert started slow and didn't pick up steam until halfway through. Band has a good sound to them and I would compare their sound to ZZ Top.

Eric Clapton- Live in San Diego with special guest JJ Cale, blu ray, recorded March 15 , 2007
Audio: Excellent, pcm stero, dts HD master audio 5.1
Video: Excellent
Performance: Excellent
Genre: Blues Rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: a well produced concert video. Not my taste in music but relaxing to listen to with a mix of JJ Cale songs and I'm guessing Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton.

Kansas- There's No Place Like Home, blu ray 35th Anniversary 2009, with orchestra
Audio: Outstanding, Dolby Digital stereo/5.1, pcm stereo 24/48, pcm 5.1
Video: Excellent
Performance: Excellent
Genre: progressive rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comments: I have Kansas dvd where they play some really good Hard Rock. This setlist did nothing for me, too much lyric or poetry content, not my style.

Michael Schenker- Temple of Rock, Blu ray, May 13 2012
Audio: Excellent, Lpcm stereo, dts HD Master 5.1
Video: Excellent
Performance: Excellent
Genre: hard rock
Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5
Comments: Concert opens in an intimate venue on a smallish stage with a NO Non-sense Rock setlist from beginning to end. However songs IMO lack a little in creative riffs, thus I felt the concert a little tedious to listen to the end. I would describe Michael Schenker's guitar style as a shredder.

Well said, this is one of the reasons there is no more TV set in my home.

I will certainly mention if editing is a hack job and I have a few. I am more likely not going to post 'em and/or other bad blu ray recordings that I would give a bad rating.

DGM- Passing Stages, blu ray, Live in Milan 2016, Live in Atlanta 2013, 2017 release
Audio: Excellent, Dolby Digital 2.0 mpeg
Video: Excellent
Performance: Excellent
Genre: progressive metal/power rock
Rating: 5 out of 5
Comment: Music is hard and fast rock from beginning to end but not rank. For those who have never heard the band I would say their sound is similar to Dream Theater or Statovarius. Of the two concerts I preferred Atlanta.

Blue Oyster Cult- iHeart Radio Theater N.Y.C. 2012, blu ray
Audio: Excellent, Lpcm stereo, Dolby 5.1
Video: picture quality is excellent, camera editing a hack job
Performance: Good, not their best
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5
Comment: Listened in Lpcm, band had 'you are there sound' of a Night Club. Camera editing changes constantly usually under 2 seconds, however on a guitar solo camera actually stayed on the guitar player for awhile. Anyway I switched my TV to Cable TV and just listened to the concert.
Setlist was okay, some songs I hadn't heard, would have like 'Then Came the Last Days in May' included. Band seemed to lack enthusiasm that I seen in another concert video.

I read through all 9 pages of this and didn't see my all time favorite Blu-Ray concert, Foo Fighters: Live At Wembley Stadium from 2008.
Rating 6 out of 5: mathematically impossible to relay how awesome this concert is in my sound room ;)
It is really difficult to find good recordings (on Bluray) of modern artists. I have a great concert of Ben Folds on 54th but it's regular DVD... and sounds ok to be honest.. but nothing like BR.
I like Radiohead, Modest Mouse, NIN, Dave Matthews, and what used to be 'alternative'... and less classic rock. I have most of the classic rock I want covered.
I would really be interested to hear a new group produce something fantastic and live... but I don't know if that exists. (yet)
A couple more I like:
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City Music Hall
Rating: 4 out of 5 overall - the excessive noodling on some songs annoy me a little. Otherwise, great quality and performance.. really 4.5 out of 5.
The King Of Limbs: Live From The Basement
Rating 5 out of 5 - Unique in that this isn't so much a concert but a behind the scenes look at the recording of TKOL, one of my favorite albums.
If anyone has more suggestions for alternative or newer blu-ray concerts, I'm interested.... I like a good performance with no nonsense and great SQ.
I'm looking to upgrade my receiver and BR player this Christmas. I have a 15-yr-old Onkyo that's OK but I would think things might have improved since 2005. Panasonic makes a UP9000 that might serve as a CD transport for me as well. I've got about 6 Blu-ray concerts on my wishlist now... but not much alternative or modern yet.. (Is U2 really 'alternative'?)

Pulled out that Foo Fighters disk to watch it today after Taylor's passing last week. Phenomenal disk!
Have you checked out INXS: Live Baby Live? It's available in 4k digitally or on Blu-ray with an Atmos soundtrack. Originally filmed in the summer of '91 on 35mm, the restoration is mind blowing. Looks and sounds absolutely fantastic!

Love the suggestions in this thread!
Peter Gabriel 'Secret World Live' has been a long favourite of mine, so second that. It seems that I should get my hands on the 'Growing up' concert.
Also Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds 'Live at Radio City..'
I don't think that Stings '...all this time' concert from 2001 has been mentioned yet.
A beautiful concert, set in his home in Toscana, featuring Chris Botti, Manu Katché, Christian McBride and others.
The concert was scheduled for september 11, 2001. The rest is history, as they say.
The disc is part concert, part documentary. It is of course possible to watch the concert without the documentary.

Really sad about Taylor.. wife and I had concert tickets in May.
Thanks for the INXS recommendation, I will be checking that out for sure.

If anyone is a fan of metal/prog sound, I highly recommend Between The Buried And Me playing their Coma Ecliptic album in its entirety at a show back in 2017. Extremely well recorded DVD, and seeing the drummer actually play some of that is just mind-boggling. Definitely one to play at a LOUD volume. :thumb:
I know it's up on YT, but there's actual good copies on PirateBay if you're the nefarious type.
