Custom GR Research LS-9 Line Array Speaker Demo
« on: 7 Sep 2007, 01:56 am »
We will be completing our first set of custom LS-9 Line Arrays. We will demo them at my shop before they ship out to the customer.

This will be a unique opportunity that you won't want to miss.   :drums: :guitar:

We are shooting for completion before the end of September.

If you'd like to attend, please RSVP me here or at my email, as I have no idea how many people could possibly attend. Please, no phone calls.

Post any questions in this thread.

We will announce a firm date and pictures of the actual customer pair of LS-9's shortly.

We will have also be demoing custom products from other vendors in the form of IC's ,SC's and custom power supplies that you will find very worthy of consideration as well.

The front end we will be using is a Bolder Cable modified SB 3 with Bolder Cable Ultimate PS Mk II. The speakers will be vertically bi-amped with a pair of ATI 1202 SS amps (240 watts per side). Cables will be from specialist manufacturers and will be announced shortly.

Prototype LS-9's:

Denny,

Given the sensitivity of the LS-9's (they are in the mid 90's right?), why bi-amp them?

Headroom.  :drums:

Vertical bi-amp with stereo amps. That way I have one speaker's woofer/tweeter section pounding on one amp, and the other speaker's woofer/tweeter section pounding on the other amp. It'll lessen the load each amp has to drive.

The LS-9's are 91 db sensitivity at 1 meter.

Hm, I will be in Ottawa from the 21st to the 27th...

That's cutting it close time wise John, and Ottawa is about 3 hrs away. But if they're done by then, and you're willing to shoot on over, we could try and arrange for you to hear them.  :P

Shoot man, wish I could be there too! I hope it all goes well for you Denny, goodies on the way soon. aa

Best,
John

Thanks John.  :thumb:

Things are finally clearing up a bit at my work so definitely count me in for the demo session.  Of course, now that I've said this I've probably jinxed it. :duh:

Is there a confirmed date yet, Denny? I'm interested in attending as I like to add to my experiences in all things audio! The only opportunities that I've had to listen to line arrays is at various rock concerts that I've attended in yesteryears, which for some reason are not that well preserved in my memory. :smoke:

No official date yet Mark, but it will be in the next few weeks.

Yeah I've heard the PA type line arrays in my days as a pro musician. I've never heard a "good" PA system. Never heard what I would call "good" sound at a live venue. I've heard "loud", "visceral", "bombastic", but never "good". I've never wanted to bring home a PA speaker to put in my system.

Most PA systems are horn based, or some a combination of horn tweeter and cone driver bass, but have never heard a good one.

I don't think it's apples to apples to consider the LS-9's as similar to a concert type, PA line array.

I have heard the Neo3 planar's and the XBL^2 drivers from GR in other designs. I have a really good idea of their sonic capabilities.

This configuration puts a long row of Neo 8's and a long row of XBL^2 woofers in a line, and has them working well below their physical limits and therefore in an ultra low distortion setting.

Based on what I heard from the OB 7's paired with the GR passive radiator sub, the LS-9's are going to be a real treat.

To be honest, I think that they'll be devastating.  :o   :P     Seriously.

I've been looking at the 24 woofers and 18 planar tweeters that'll go into these. I think I'm more anxious than anybody.

Cheers
