Tubes, Tubes, Tubes
« on: 9 May 2007, 10:41 pm »
I just got this response to an ad that I inquired about on Agon.

I was asking the seller (Sam1104) what he had that he thought would work nicely with my SWL.

Hi Tom,
I got one Mullard Blackburn plant made 5AR4/GZ34 tube
at $120 shipped. The etched code is f32/B4G1. It might
be D getter though the flash is so perfect that I
couldn't see the getter inside easily. The print on
the glass is faint though. It scored 62/62 (40=65% or
61=100%)---100% matched sections. I also have TS black
plates D getter 5687 NIB/NOS tubes at $150/pair. Let
me know if you decide to but any of them.
Thanks
Sam

Is anybody familiar with these tubes or seller?
I am new to tubes, hence, in the dark with some of the language... D getter, plates, etc.
Do these prices sound like they are in the ballpark?

If it's truly NOS, $120 isn't out of the ballpark for a GZ34 like that.

...and the TS probably means Tung-Sol on the 5687's which are highly regarded.

In the 120 range (from an individual) the Mullards should be dual getters.  From a dealer its a whole other story of course (but you should expect better service than "I'm not sure what type of getter" from a dealer).

That range is the most I've given for theany of the used, but good Mullard GZ34 I've bought.  I even got a used dual halo getters fat base for that range.

All of the rectifiers I've gotten test extremely strong so I'm not sure what NOS buys you in this case.

At the risk of being flamed, I'm going to shoot from the hip in my usual style. Sam has the highest prices for tubes in the USA other than Brendan at TubeWorld.

You can do much better than $120/tube.

Used, but new-testing GZ34 tubes (Mullard Blackburn f32 dual getter) sell everyday on E-Bay for ~$90 (and often for much less).  Mullard GZ34/5AR4 are known for their expectionally long life (10+ years or more). There's little reason to buy a new-in-the-box Mullard GZ34 unless it's simply because it makes the buyer feel better to open a new box.

IMO, YMMV, FWIW...

Brendan's prices are high BUT its tubes are always great and he can give very good advices, he knows very well what he sells.
