Mr. Noel Gallagher is back to his old Oasis ways again ... where's the bass, where are the drums?

This new release "Council Skies" is one of his better ones so far (I'm six tracks in) but it's one of those recordings where I wonder if it would sound better played back through the phono input. I can tell there's a drummer involved, but his output is so muted it's like the gentle clapping of your grandmas sewing circle.

Just for grins, I turned off the woofers on my Spatial X3s and it barely made any difference, so that's effectively nothing below 80Hz-ish then. I know this isn't the only recording like this, "Duke" by Genesis is another. Is this why people buy Cerwin Vega, to invent bass for recordings like these? Who knows, maybe it will sound a bit better in the car.

  • I reject your music, and substitute my own.

Is that why "Wonderwall" and Champaign Supernova" sounded like that in the 90s?

I guess so. It's just so disappointing to hear great music recorded this way and it's hard to imagine nobody in the mixing process noticing.
