CB,
I just play hand drums.  I started about 5 years ago after giving a friend (a rock/blues drummer) a djembe for his birthday and fell in love with it while waiting to give it to him.  I started taking W. African drumming lessons and acquiring drums.

Now I have a couple djembes, a kpalago, congas, and bongos.  We relocated from Portland to the Bay Area a couple years ago, and have had other things to occupy my time, but would like to get back to it one of these days.

That's cool! I started playing drums (and guitar) in the 60's and played drums in several bands from '70 on up. I reverted back to guitar the last ten years though. I love playing drums but their too loud in the house. I miss not playing in bands.

CB,
Pick up some bongos or congas--pretty mellow, not too loud, and can be pretty fun to jam on.  I didn't gig, but did perform in a few recitals as a student--one in Nungua, Ghana which was pretty cool.

I took my congas over to my buddie's house for his 4th of July party one year and played the back line for his blues band, just as a jam session, which was pretty fun.  His teacher is Ron Hurst from Steppenwolf--cool dude that's been to the dark side and returned.
