Big-ish swing band sound from some very cool cats on Tone Cool records.
These cats can really rock as well.

Hmm ... maybe this belongs in the Blues thread? Hmm ...

Best I could do for a photo.  The album in Sky Blue by the Maria Schneider Orchestra on the artistShare label.  Yep, small a.  IMO she is the successor to Gerald Wilson and Gil Evans for great composers for big band or orchestra.  Her compositions are more complex than Evans.  She must have put a lot of time into the compositions on this album and they are both pretty or playful and never dull.  Rich's Piece is about as blue as it gets.  It took me several listens to appreciate this album in depth but now that I do I'm given to call it a masterpiece.  Be patient and listen astutely.  Cheers.

Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers-  Live at Keystone 3 (Concord Jazz) with a sextet including the Marsalis brothers and it cooks!  Blakey has never IME sounded so nimble.  Very good live and dimensional recording, too.

Dunno that one but a personal favorite for McLaughlin's music tho the recording is compressed all to hell is with Carlos Santana on Columbia.  Got some huge drumming on this.  Love the last track, I think it is, composed by John Coltrane, I believe.  It's not in front of me.

Hi Jim, they do a version "Love Supreme" & an acoustic version of "Naima". The sound quality is good, but it was a "one off' wonder of sorts that any  musician must hear in my world at least. I was going to see them when they played in Chicago in '73 but for some reason didn't. Like the album, they had Billy Cobham, Don Alias & Jan Hammer on drums! I missed a great one. I wasn't planning on playing it but the last one just ended and this one is front of me. What to do?? Cheers!

I must pull that out and spin it.  Been a long while.  I owned it around the time it was first released.  I did listen to this last week:

and this:

Saw Trane with his quartet- Tyner, Garrison, Jones- several times in the 60's.
