Wonderful 3-cd sets of Dex with Kenny Drew, Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson, and Albert "Tootie" Heath, July 1967

Keep the recommendations and comments about why you like the particular album coming!! It's one thing to see a nice album cover, but I find it helps a lot when people add comments about why they like a certain album and comments on the playing. Very helpful!!  :thumb:

Santacore (and others), this is THE best live set of Dex recorded EVER! Inspired, to say the least! Best sound, playing, and music. If you like Dex at all, you NEED this set.
Actually I got mine the hard way. I had purchased two of the three discs separately before I knew there was a box set of this.  :duh:
(I cheated by showing you the box set above.  )

I have these three discs which are the same discs in the box set:

Thanks r-a-d, yes I do like Dex, and will probably check out the set. Just ordered the WR set after your note, along with some Jack McDuff, and Jimmy Smith. I've been well pleased with the import remaster sets I've picked up so far. Eric Dolphy, MJQ, Oscar Peterson, Donald Byrd, all well done and you can't beat the price.  :thumb:

Agree, it is an amazing time to be purchasing fantastic sounding imports these days for those of us still spinnin' those little shiny silver discs.

Think I'll put Dolphy's "Last Date" on the agenda tonite.  Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure", too.  Dolphy happens to be on that.

ArthurDent, how does that Lee Morgan "8 classic albums" set sound? I saw a bunch in that series by various artists when I was at Amoeba records recently. The price looked too good to be true. I'm interested to hear your take on the sound quality of the release.

Hi santacore - so far I've been well impressed with the re-mastering of these vintage classics. Sadly I don't have the budget to seek out & acquire the vinyl, and even purchasing as single CDs the cost would be somewhat prohibitive. As noted I have several of them, and have a couple more on the way. imo they are a great & cost effective way to dig into an artists library if you are a jazz fan. I know some others here have them as well, maybe they'll pitch in their thoughts on the sound quality, but I've had no complaints so far. Even as a jazz fan there was much I missed in the early years, and am discovering or re-discovering in large part due to this thread and the various fellow ACers who've shared their gems. It's pretty amazing how good the original recording of these artists was given the technology of the time. To hear them you'd think they were recorded last year, not 50+ years ago, and pretty faithful to the original I'd think. Not 'hot' or over tweaked in the re-master. So much music, so little time (&$).  8)

PS  It is worth noting you sacrifice liner notes with these sets. All they give you is a listing of the discs with album, date, & cuts. Bit of a bummer in that regard, but guess you can't have everything at the reduced price.

One of my favorite Hutcherson albums. The first side has a killer rendition of Corea's "Matrix".

I have a bunch of albums on Michael Mantler's and Carla Bley's label, WATT, that I dig.
