An Affordable Preamp for Bella Extreme 3205 MKII

I am looking for a preamp in the $500 range (used is okay) to match with my 3205.  It is 100% dedicated to music from my pc through a Cambridge Audio Dac Magic so only need a couple of inputs , no vinyl.  Not sure whether I should go tube preamp, solid state, or passive.  My speakers are Ellis Audio 1801s.  Running my 3205 with KT88 tubes.  What suggestions have you?

I have used a couple SS pre to drive my 3205(older original Signature version), both worked very well. I have also used a passive TVC and a couple tube pre's, I seem to prefer the combination of SS pre with the 3205. The passive combo was nice and smooth but I was soon missing that extra 'bite' an active pre contributes. Both of the tube pre I used added too much noise, hum (these were cheap budget tube line stages, under $300.) and gain.

I would suggest you try each type within your budget to 'see' which matches up with your preferred sound.

I was thinking a solid state pre with the amp - any recommendations in my under $1,000 price range?

I had great results with a Tempest pre, very quiet background. Often can be found under $500. (used). And built like a tank.
Currently I am using an Usher P307.

That might be a decent choice.

I might have an Electrocompaniet 4.5 for sale soon, but it is more than $500 by a few.

I am going to have my Sonic Frontiers SFL1 Signature for sale. Works great with the 3205. I really wanted $650 for it, but may be flexible for an easy deal.

Hello David,
If you can hold off till a little more funds become available, I would receommend even a basic version the Bella L/P. The Bella L/P was designed to work with any amplifier, tube or solid state, but was voiced with the 3205 series amplifiers in mind as well.

The Bella is a winner for sure.  A really nice, pure sounding preamp.

There are some metal boxed units around $1600.  Also seen at the bottom of this link.
I beta tested a unit like this and it convinced me to buy a wood production version which is the Bubinga one at the top with gold knobs.

The Bella L/P Big Red Machine is speaking of is shown below. It is currently listed for only $1595 but if you are interested, let me know and I'll see what more I can do for you. It is a brand new piece with the full 5 year warranty. It is a linestage only (no phono).
