Looking at the HT3...
« on: 7 Jan 2007, 07:45 am »
Hi,

I am looking at building the HT3 for just a living room stereo. What speakers are these comparable too. I haven't had a chance to listen to them, but am wondering what other people would consider a comparable speaker to the HT3.

Robert
This is a few reviews on the Critics circle plus all the reviews on our forum here.

By the way Robert if you want a pair of MDF cabinet built with no finish these can be ordered now as well.We will have the HT3 MDF cabinets as a option for the kits for those who want MDF cabinets but no finish is applied.(These MDF cabinets will be available for most kits)
These cabinets will come MDF all pre machined , they will require some sanding or rounded corners may be also machined for those who want to apply the veneer them self.

This takes 90% of the build process out of the picture.People can then order the unfinished cabinets and apply a painted finish or give veneer a try.

Thanks for the info Al.

Well what I was going to get were the B&W 603 or 604 S3 speakers for my stereo set-up. Can anyone campare the two speakers.

Thanks

The B&W brand is nice, but if I was offered a trade, I would feel no desire to replace my HT3s.  The B&W 604's extension only goes into the 40s.  My HT3s go well down into the upper 20s.  The HT3 is truly wonderful and has the added benefit of being able to be built by just about anyone.  The new kits with pre-fab cabinets is an added step of simplicity for those without a tablesaw and router.  The front baffle that came with my HT3 was exquisite.  (I made my own, mine are all baltic birch ply)

Another thing that is cool here is you can totally customize your speaker with any veneer you wish to use.  You can match your furniture easily this way.  I went with walnut on mine and I think it looks better than anything B&W offers.

The HT3 will be a great speaker for you, I have heard both and would choose the HT3 any day of the week and twice on Sunday... oh, wait - it is Sunday!

I am thinking of building the front baffle as well, so I have one solid piece of MDF on the front, so how did you router out the midrange section. Can you post some pics or connect a link so I can see your work.

Thanks

Well, I merely routed out the space.  It takes a little practice, so start on some scrap MDF or plywood.  Route the driver holes before you assemble the box, not after.  You can get a jasper circle jig from partsexpress.com  - It should provide some pretty nice cuts.

The building process was documented here
