240 vs 260
« on: 18 Nov 2006, 06:42 pm »
This is a post I put on the VMPS forum and a response I got from Brian any suggestions here. I guess I'm leaning toward the 240. Has anyone compared the two amps head to head?

I am finally getting an itch to change out Amps to go with my new 626Rs and I have narrowed it down to Van Alstyne 240 and 260 the 260 only has about 5 more watts than the 240 but it supposedly has "twice the thermal and current capacity" and is recommended for speakers down to 2 ohm impedance. The 240 is supposed to have basically the same circuits but is recommended down to 4 ohms. I tried to look up the impedance on my 626Rs and all I could find in the specs was 4 ohms - but I think this can very. Any suggestions, is higher current capacity something I need for my 626Rs or should I save a couple hundred bucks? I may post this on the AVA forum too.

The 626R is an 8 Ohm system with a 4.6 Ohm minimum impedance.  Either amp should work fine, ask Frank.

I have the 260. IMO, it's worth the extra do-ray-me, because it will handle most speaker loads with ease and they will be able to play at fairly loud levels. This way, if you ever decide to get different speakers that may have a little more difficult load, your amp will still be able to handle them.

Just a thought.

Go for the 260 if you can afford it.  It is more universally useable with a wider variety of speakers in the future because of the enhanced current capacity and cooling capacity.  The sound is the same, but the 260 has twice as much heat sink and twice as many output devices.

I would go for the 260.  Used to own one, in fact, and it is a nice rugged little amp.  It will be plenty good for the 626Rs.  And if and when you move up to one of Big B's larger speakers it will also be plenty good.  I am using a Fet-Valve with some RM30Ms and am extremely happy.  (I used to use my Omega 260 with a pair of biro L/1s and before that some magnepan Tympani 1(U)s.)
