He made the best Lyric Symphony(Zemlinsky) with his wife the soprano Julia Varady, and the Berlin Philharmonic under Maazel.

Right shek, he was a baritone...
They played a tribute to him on my FM station tonight, singing Shubert's "Good Night," solo with piano accompaniment. It was so beautiful.

Hi Rich,
Learned to sing in my younger days, so know a little bit about singers.
Still not sure if I'll go to the DC fest in July. Too hot down there, besides the hot amps..... :thumb:

His recordings of Schubert's "Winterreise" and Schumann's "Liederkreis" were always among my favorites.
-
Saw him in Tannhauser at the Bayreuth festival. He had memorable performances accompanied by Gerald Moore. A great opera singer but
Schubert Leider was his thing. Never to be out done.

Since he retired in 1992, and left opera many years before that, his passing is hardly a loss to opera lovers. at this late date. He recorded more than any person in history, classical, rock, pop, you name it and his many hundreds of recordings are and will alway be readily available. He is most highly regarded as a singer of songs, songs of many composers and nationalities, and recorded near complete sets (of songs appropriate for a male singer) of Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Schuman, Liszt, Wolf, the ballads of Lowe, etc., the list is nearly endless and comprehensive.

One of my favorite Mahler recordings is his Songs of a Wayfarer with Furtwangler. 1952. Worth seeking out.
