Dang, I read the OP before posting and still missed that.  My mistake.

I know!  When I added the Ascend Acoustics to the list, I really wanted to add the Salk SongBirds, but they are $1300.

Zu speakers are built in Ogden, Utah with drivers made in Eminence, Kentucky.

Yep, I forgot about Zu!  They are very cool looking and the Zu guys seem really cool.  I've never heard them but they appear to be high quality.  They are closing out some speakers (Omen?) for $999.  They look awesome and I'd love to hear them.

I'm not in the market but always love hearing new systems and music!

Cheers,

J

Von Schweikert comes to mind. Though they don't make anything even close to the $1000 price point right now the VR-1 and VR-2 line can be picked up used and are an exceptional value.

There are even a pair of VR-1's for sale right now:

Tyler Acoustics are made in Kentucky but unfortunately have nothing in the $1000 range.

there is a place i know of with new vr-1's never sold for a $1000

this is how i kinda came up w the 1k figure, because it is possible to get way better speakers for way better price in this problematic economic situation.

(and if nothing else, the drivers come from out of continent, but at least some able bodied person gets to install them here)

i'm going to go thru the post in detail and i will tally the recommendations and we can go from there.

Good catch on Nate's speakers.  The standmounts sounded good from 5 minutes at AKFest 2009.

VMPS 626R are stellar for the price too.

In my system the cost of the speakers are double what I invested in pre/power amps and ideally (as a "speaker guy") that's the way I think it should be.  Everyone has their own priorities and minimum standards, but speakers are the biggest variable in the playback chain.

Don't forget to look into the satellite/subwoofer route.  Works great for a simple A/V setup and has several other advantages (but would be tough to do within your budget).  However you could do with a pair of standmounts now and add a sub later.

OTOH folks that have crappy rooms (bad acoustics, no isolation, big WAF, etc.) should just use headphones.

and in the garage...     :thumb:

my main system is  moon and pmc

my new goal is to build the best system around for the cheapest i can,

so i picked up the creek a50 at less than a third of it's retail value, so now i have to pick up speakers for the same "cheap" goal but because the creek isn't  N. american, the speakers must be just for my own conviction.

For $1K I'd buy Danny's X-Static kit for  $379 a pair, and use the left over to get one of the guys here to build the cabinets.  I need to build out a kit that I have, and while you're cutting out one, you can cut out two almost as easily.  I bet I could send you a flat pack pretty cheap, and all you would have to do would be buy some No Rez, some clamps (if you don't have any), and some glue.  You could figure out how you want to finish them after they are built. You would have a set of fantastic speakers for under $600, and veneer them yourself or use the remaining $ to take them to a cabinet shop for veneering.

Vandersteen 1C on the used market can be had for <$500. Hard to beat them at that price.
I had a pair a few months ago and sold them for $375. The buyer got a screamin deal.
And as I stated in the original thread, the Polk Audio LSi7 is an under appreciated bookshelf speaker.

And now replaced by the LSi703 so they should be discounted prices available.
