Title: Your daily driver :)
Post by: JohnR on 2 Mar 2011, 10:28 pm
Here's mine:

Mini Cooper Diesel. Was the most fuel-efficient car you could buy in Australia - yes, more efficient than the Prius at time of purchase and still better on the highway. Not sure if it's available in the US yet due to high output of something else... nitrogen oxide? Well you can't win 'em all.

Handles nicely, certainly well enough for me :)

Diesels rock! Mine is a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDi. Really liking it so far. I got a smidge over 50mpg on a couple of 250 mile runs back and forth to the Indy airport last week  :thumb:

I'm thinking about buying my wife the new Mini Cooper. :)

Not sure if it's available in diesel here, got to do some research.

Those Diesels are a blast.

A buddy of mine is heavily involved in racing with Diesel engines and has been in everything from dragsters, drag trucks, and even a VW Beetle. If you Facebook then look up Greg Hogue to see some of the projects.

Another good friend of mine owns Nitrous Express. He has done a few Diesel racing projects that you guys will really like too. See them here: http://www.nitrousexpress.com/projects1.php

I wish those new Diesels would have been available back in my street racing days. And I have more than once considered putting a twin turbo Diesel in my Vette. Maybe one of these days.

My understanding is that my little 140hp torque monster can be ECU re-tuned to euro trim (with dpf removal) and suddenly find about 80 or 90 hp for free. But, that would void the warranty of course, along with a few other violations  :green:

Nice John.   :thumb:

We don't have the diesel option here in the States.

A Mini Cooper S is a possible next car for me.  But so is a BMW 1 series or an older 3 or 5 series, or maybe a little GTI...

Until the time comes when I am ready to pony up the cash, my everyday driver will remain a very unspectacular, but very reliable 1999 Toyota Camry.

I don't have a daily driver since I don't drive every day, but when I do drive it's in a 1987 BMW 325.  Photo was taken a couple of weeks ago, and that was after I shoveled for half an hour.   :duh:

My version of "green" is keeping my 1997 Accord running.  Low mileage, but getting on in years.  Just over 110K miles now.  This was a pic from the summer.  Previous owner (friend's mom) kept it well, and I have treated nicely since I took it on 4 years ago.

I do about 40k miles per year on a 2009 Toyota Corolla (my 4th Toyota).  Pleasant enough, averages 36 mpg, very cheap to maintain, and handles well in the snow and ice.

Wifey does about 30k miles per year with a 2009 Subaru Outback (my first Sube).  Better built, averages 27 mpg, and of course is great in snow and ice.

I like trying different cars/brands.  Over the years I've owned VW, Saab, Honda (2), Datsun/Nissan (during their transition), Chevy (crap from the mid 80s), Ford (crap from 1990), and Mazda.  Up here in the great white north I have no interest in convertibles or even moonroofs.  Had a pickup and a minivan, but has kids move out and daily mileage has gone up, we've shifted to having two cars.

At current prices, the above numbers say we spend roughly $650/month on gas.   :duh:

I don't have a picture.  I am not much of a car guy.  To me its a tool and fancy ain't my style.  I drive a 2003 Golf IV TDI chipped by RocketChip (35hp gain for ~$250).  She has 225 lb\ft and gets 50mpg on summer fuel.  In the winter we lose ~10%.  I also run mixes of biodiesel from B100 down the line.  The increased lubricity makes her run smooth.

my daily (and only) car is a 1999.5 VW Jetta GLS. It's got 229,000 miles on it and there's more little things wrong with it than i can list, but the engine cranks up every morning and the transmission still shifts. i haven't had a car note since 2005 and the insurance on it is under $250 a year. sorry for not having pictures of it, but i've never felt the car was worth taking a picture of...

i have had a thing for pantera's ever since i saw my first one at an auto show in 1972, at the tender age of 16.  even then, i knew i'd own one someday - as it had a ford v8 in it, i knew it would never reach the stratospheric prices of other desirable hand-built italian exotics.  you can find nice drivers for ~$30k or so; completely refurb'd examples usually start at ~$40k and go up from there, depending on how crazy the owner went, in the restoration process.  some panteras are truly over the top, performance wise, and cosmetically.

sorry about the off-topic diwersion - most panteras are not daily rides.  but, i do know a pantera owner who lives in fredneck md, local to me; he does use his as a daily ride; his car is absolutely beautiful; i wish mine was as nice...

he can be seen w/his car here - he's furthest to the left in the pic, w/his car in front of him:
a better pic of his car:

now, to get a bit back on topic, if i can conwince myself to buy a new car, (i have never done so; i have only bought used), i will be sorely tempted, as soon as these start selling in the usa in the next few months:

i'd give my '04 scion xb to my wife, (truth be known, this box is as much fun to drive as my alfa gtv6), and i would give her '04 honda civic, (which is one of the most boring rides i have ever experienced), to my son, who turns 16 this year.  hmmm...   8)

Do you really think they'll import tha Abarth doug ? They were hard enough to find back in the day. ('60s & '70s). From my experience with a '73 128 coupe you should really buy 2 so you have parts to keep one running. Primary daily driver '94 Nissan PU (86K mi), 2ndary '97 Ford F-250 SD diesel (102K), with the occasional run in my '83 Subaru GL wagon, 206K miles (all mine). Engine has never been cracked, and still has original muffler !

Nice that you painted the Alfa, as all true Italian perfomance vehicles should be red.  :thumb:

yes, i do think the abarth will be imported, tho mebbe not right away.  and, it may have a few ponies less than the euro-spec model.  regarding reliability, i think these have come a long way since your early 70's 128; tho i don't think any euro car will be as reliable as cars out of asia.  i beat the crap out of my black gtv6 for 10 years and 200k, and it was wery reliable, certainly more so than the bmw's a bud of mine drove during the same time period.  yes, it needed more standard maintenance than a japanese car, but it was not bad at all.  i didn't repaint it - 10 years of torture meant it had little niggling issues, that combined w/serious rust issues, meant it was less expensive for me to simply find another cherry rust-free example to act as a donor for all the hi-po goodies that i had put on mine.   :green:  as parts are becoming scarcer, and i don't want to destroy this one, i decided not to use it as a daily driver any more.  (the pantera, btw, is as easy, or easier, to find parts for as any ford chevy toyota or honda you could think of - the aftermarket support of this car, w/only ~5000 ever produced, is amazing.)

It's a nice looking sleeper, harkens back to the old days in many respects. They were giant killers in their class at the track (NSUs as well). If they set up a service/support system they might just grab a corner of the market. I had my 128 for almost exactly 1 year to the day, before I sold it. Of the 12 months I think I actually got to drive it maybe 6. It was a little screamer, but just wouldn't quit breaking down. Nice thing was the dealer let me have loaners, so got to drive a nice GTV, and 124 convertible while in for repairs.  8) JD  and back to the thread..........

A most humble thanks, she really is a great car for pretty much anything on PUBLIC roads, yet a fat pig for tracking of course so won't do that. Sold the F2000 open wheel racecar a few years back yet may rent one for an SCCA racing event or three in 2011. As for the home, that is my neighbor's place as i live in a very historic section of this very old (for the USA) town. Not sure if you guys know, i have a psudo 'sister site' at www.EnjoyTheTrack.com with videos of my tracing the Ferrari in my early days and the F2000 during SCCA events.

DOUG, get that Pantera on the road!!! Also, the Abarth is said ot be a great car, so go for it!!!!

Had a SAAB 9-3 for 11 years and she (Helga) needed replacing.....but the fruit don't fall far from the tree I guess and she's been replaced by Ursula, a SAAB 9-3 (SportCombi / Wagon, in AERO trim)  :)

She now has a complete set of Bilstein dampers front and rear, 3pt. undercarriage brace, and K&N replacement filter. No need for more - she's just what I want now.

I test drove 5-door models from Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Mini, Chevrolet (HHR), VW, Lexus and Mercedes...this one had my name written all over it.  I think BMW/Mini has screwed the pooch for ride quality with those crashy feeling run-flats as standard.

I've already forewarned the wife about my coming mid-life crisis...the new FIAT 500 (Sport).

I don't need the 30 extra ponies of the Abarth...the Multi-Air 100HP engine on the 2500lb Sport model for $17,500 base for the snicky little 5 speed is the ticket for me.  The most fun I ever had driving was a 1991 VW GTI - a 2500lb hatchback with a 5 speed.  I think it cost more 18 years ago, too; so the value seems to be there for the FIAT 500 Sport

It's made in Mexico...but I'll get over it (so was my GTI and it was fun and fine)

I enjoyed my old Saab 99 (last of the leaded gas burners from 1979) when I replaced the stock tires with really nice Dunlops.

Those cars were amazingly huge on the inside, well built, and of course quirky.  I had to spend $65 for a replacement panel for the under dash (back when driver and front passenger could play footsie) so there'd be some place to install a radio.

I've loved the car, but on Tuesday its getting traded in for an Infiniti G37x.  I'm not excited for the move, but the Bimmer is getting to be a pain to maintain at 114k.

Nice John.

George

Well, I didn't go with any of the choices above...instead I went with a new 2011 335i with Xdrive.

I have had her for just around 3 months and I am loving it!!

Having a car like this has renewed my spirit to drive.  :thumb:  Heck, even my under 10 mile commute to work is fun and enjoyable (I found some twisty back roads).

Tomorrow the snows go on.  But if I am to believe all the reviews and comments, they might be better tires than the stock run flats!

based on friend's experiences w/bmw's, you should count your blessings that you made it that far, before "maintenance" expenses started taking their toll.   recently, my daughter needed a cheap (~$5k) car to replace the one that had an incident w/bambi.  we were looking at cars in the +/- ten year old range, +/- 100k miles.  we really wanted another mazda protege, to replace the one she had.  what we were amazed at was how many bmw's were in this price range, along w/all the asian cars like corollas, hondas, mazdas, etc.  but, thinking about it a nano-second, i know why.

don't worry gopher; i think you will enjoy the infiniti a ton.  i know that if i were in the market for a car in that range, a 6sp manual g37 would be at the top of my list.  the bmw's are far too unreliable, w/far too many computerized gadgets for my taste.  and, your bmw body style was the last one that looked nice - how a car could go from being so handsome to so bizarre in one model change is beyond me.   :o

enjoy the new ride!   :thumb:

Here's my daily driver until I get my truck fixed. It's a '93 Mazda RX7 with a aluminum V8 from a 2001 Camaro Z28. The LS1 has a vette Z06 cam & springs, better rod bolts and a underdrive pulley to help clear the radiator. It has the Z28 6 speed transmission with a 12" clutch and light flywheel. The swap parts came from Hinson Supercars and Samburg Rod&Custom. For tunez, it's got a old skool Alpine 7897 HU and Boston speakers. I plan to add a 4 channel amp to make use of the Alpine's active Xover. I own Adire Extremis 6.4 and MaxFidelity neo1.3 that I plan to mount in the doors. It's pretty fast.

Post by: mcgsxr on 2 Dec 2011, 12:28 pm
Love the motor swap!

Those Extremis will be deep, and you will need trim rings to clear the windows unless you kick panel them - either way, potentially some fiberglass work for pods etc.

I have some of the Max gear too.

I am driving a 2003 LEXUS RX 300   SUV.
I love it overall ! Great in the snow! Great for road trips. I feel safe with my 5 year old daughter strapped in the back. Has a heavy ride which is good for not feeling the potholes. Very reliable so far. I bought it used with 50,00 miles on it.
I don't love that it guzzles gas. It has very poor turning radius. Sometimes I wish I had a car that really handles for city driving. I like to drive a bit aggressive, and a medium sized SUV is not great for aggressive handling.

Danny,

Very nice. Wish you were close to here. I have a family member who has stage 4 prostate/bone cancer and is all about everything Livestrong. He holds local Livestrong fundraisers and I often thought about rounding up a demo yellow/black Vette for him to ride in and park it during the event as a promo. Unfortunately I don't have a connection for someone local to let go of their yellow toy for a few hours.

If you were not so far away then I would fix you up.

Are there any local Corvette dealers near you? I bet any of them would be glad to do something like that for a good cause. Even a nice Yellow Camaro wouldn't be bad.

Yellow is the battery, the big black thing is the fuel cell.

That's just nothing short of amazing. I've always loved that car, and you've hotrodded the daylights out of one, and maintained its stock (external) appearance. Kudos to you.

What used to be my daily driver - 2000 Suzuki SV650. Twice totaled, and modified a fair bit. (I'm #71 stuffing it up the inside and overtaking him - fun times.)

Don't race anymore, but still have the bike.

Now, my daily driver is a 1990 Toyota Celica ST at around 195k miles and gets around 27-33 miles a gallon depending on weather and driving habits.

And, I have to share this one because I do love it (although I long for a twin for the road again):

I was busy loving the mirror'd finish of the underside of the hood - you can see reflections in it of the motor and ground etc.  AWESOME stealth mod, only seen when at the show and shine with the hood up.

Original owner and a Hot Rodder, kept the exterior stock, but nothing else.  1 of 384 SE Bandits with the Pontiac engine, 4 sp, and hard top.  Small fuel cell is for racing gas for the NOS - totally separate fuel systems. It has a Ram Air 400 Engine, SD 455 Rods, Single plane high rise intake with a Demon 825 cc carb, 3" custom exhaust with electric dumps, billet coil over shocks with tube control arms, 6 piston brakes, digital ignition, quad remote oil filters, etc.  Painted it and did the stripes in my garage.

MY last car was a green 1999 SVT. I owned it  for 13 years..
Now I have a 2012 Ford Focus with manual tranny.
Lucky me i get to see my old ride often enough, as i sold it to the building caretaker's brother.
Still love that SVT. Too many tickets though.. last one was going 35 over the limit.. Being a sweet old bag it was dropped to under 10 over.
Now I try hard to obey the rules and laws of the road.. Mainly watch the MPG meter.. Getting too old to be racing around.

Actually, since I'm here....
We don't have anything very cool, but I was doing "the car shuffle" in the driveway one day and parked all the cars in one spot while i was rearranging.
I didn't set this up (otherwise they would have been parked more evenly) but I thought this was a neat shot, so I grabbed the camera.

Looks like a turn signal lens, but it's painted.

2013 Civic Si.  I went to buy a WRX but they had sold the one I wanted.  I test drove a low mile used 2013 WRX STI and fell in love, but then found out the mods voided the warranty.  I test drove the civic si after that. It wasn't near as fast nor did it have all wheel drive, but the gas mileage was much better, they had better financing options, the interior and road noise were far superoir, the radio was better, and I got it for $21k out the door with all season floor mats thrown in. It's no STI, but it's a fun little car with a suprising amount of room, and the build quality is better than any other honda I've owned or ridden in.

It was many years ago, but I still remember how much fun my late 80's Honda CRX was.

Thanks

My father owned a late 80's CRX. It was one of the best cars he ever owned.  My family has owned 10 hondas, and I don't think we've really ever had problems with any of them except maybe for a Pilot.

For about 9 years and 600,000 miles, I drove a couple of CRXs - great field service cars. In '94, after the demise of the CRX, I bought a Civic coupe that I optioned to the max (never saw another one with the same wheels). That Honda only had about 150,000 miles on it when I decided to buy something bigger - a '96 STS (all the driving was catching up with me and I thought serious comfort might be nice). Unlike the Hondas, by the 100,000 mark, the Cadillac had some serious issues develop. I replaced the STS with another GM - Bonneville SSEi (same chassis as the STS, but with different skin and drivetrain). Its only major issues in a little better than 100,000 miles were MagneSteer and the transmission - both were warranty repairs - better than the Caddy, but nothing like a Honda.

My last two daily drivers have been Hondas, S2000s to be precise. This CR is my favorite of all the cars I've owned, though I do have fond memories of my first three - '66 Mustang, '69 Europa, and '71 TransAm. Here's my daily (3 days a week and local) on a day I wish I hadn't left the top hanging in the garage - no chance of rain was predicted for that day. I'm glad I bought that cockpit cover and that it works better than advertised!

Nice Si. My daily is a white '09 Civic Si sedan. Got it new and it's the first vehicle I've owned outright. You're absolutely right. It isn't the fastest vehicle around, but its combination of fun, practicality, fuel economy, and reliability is really tough to beat without getting into something much more expensive. Only problem with mine since I've had it is that it started developing some rattles in the interior in the dash and glove box about 1.5 years ago. I think it had something to do with the extremely hot summer of 2012. Before then, things were fine. Haven't quite figured out exactly where they're coming from........but hey, it's a Civic, not a Mercedes anyway. I can't hear the rattles with the tunes on. :thumb: I've had thoughts of getting something newer / more refined / faster, but it makes far more sense to just keep the thing till it dies, and get something else really fun for weekends / nice weather (eventually).

My Fiat 500.  Not really a daily driver, more like a weekly or bi-weekly driver.  Picture is me in front of my sister's house in Canada.  I drove through two blinding snow storms in December in the snow belt to get to her place. The 500 was surprisingly stable in the snow and wind.  I saw several abandoned cars off to the side on Hywy 81 in the snow belt.  The only worry I had was hoping I didn't get plowed into by a semi or suv.

My next long trip with the 500 is driving to Axpona Chicago next month.

Cool car Paul! And the other good thing is that if it does get stuck in the snow, you can just lift it up and carry it out!

My girlfriend bought a silver 2012 BMW 328i a few months ago (with some encouragement from me  8) ) that I'm driving as much as I drive my '04 X3. It's a really fun car!

Just picked up a 2014 Subaru WRX. It's the last of the 2.5 liter, in a month or so a new WRX will be out based on the Forester XT's 2.0 liter with direct injection and a dual scroll turbo. It'll probably be awesome but the '14 wagon is more my style and should hold it's value really well.

GT Audio, I used to have a 280Z, I put in a Ford 302 making about 350 HP and a Borg Warner T5 manual tranny. The car's chassis, suspension and brakes were not so happy...  :icon_twisted:

zybar, holy $hit, the new M3s are amazing! Have fun!

It's a lease.  It was either the 500, mini cooper, mazda 2 or ford fiesta.  Manhattan Fiat worked out a great deal with some of the city's chain parking garages.  I could park two blocks from where I live for an extra $99 a month. That clinched the deal.  After driving the 500 for five months I really like the car.  Around town it has nice pickup and pretty good passing grunt on the highway.  The only time it lacks power is climbing a steep hill, have to downshift a couple of gears or get out of the car and push it.  Next time, I might get the Abarth, or a cooper s, or a fiesta st, or another pocket rocket.  :thumb:

I have a downpipe and cobb tuner from my last car ('10 WRX) that I'm going to put on it as the dealer will not void my warranty with a Cobb stage 2 tune... but I really want a 18g or 20g ball bearing turbo!

Hi all.
This is my daily 2 wheels ride. :thumb:
I can't afford a four wheel drive...
When you ride in Vietnam, you have to be dressed properly or accordingly.
Lots of dust, pollution and spitting up in the air by Vietnamese idiots.
You don't believe me, well,
go to your travel agency and buy a ticket for Vietnam,
once here, you will believe everything I wrote in the past few years.
Anyway.
My motorbike as they call it overhere is a Honda 1100cc
Oups, sorry, on too many zero.
It's a 110cc with automatic tranmsmission
or more exactly a variable ratio transmission.
Can reach 80K/Hr or 52 MPH.
The fuel injection electronic box is limited to 80K/Hr.
Fast enough to kill yourself or get killed.
By the way, I did not buy it, (No I did not steal it),
my wife's niece gave it to me when it had only 5,000Km.
The niece went to live in California
and did not wanted to bring it over there.
I can do a full week with a tank of gas which cost only 5 USD
to fill it to the rim.
Now, look who's laughfing?

Hey Guy,

An Elio will have a range of around 650 miles with an 8 gallon tank. 84mpg isn't bad. Okay, it's not electric. I, for one, think that's a good thing. If the point is reducing one's ecological impact, batteries aren't the best answer. I know that petrol powered vehicles aren't the answer either, but simple efficiency is critical and this vehicle is simple and efficient. One of Paul's mantras is 'no new technologies' - just applied physics. I don't know if/when these will ever be exported to your corner of the world - not even available here yet, but things are progressing. Here, in the US, the Elio will insure as a motorcycle - even more savings!

Hi Kevin.
Not the prettiest, but not really ugly either.
84mpg is approximately what I do with my 110CC Honda
and I have no weather protection, I'm only on two wheels, not three.
I got my two wheel free, gift from my wife's niece, but if I had to buy one today,
I would have probably rob a bank (5,000 USD)
I think that three wheeler will sell for 8,000 USD.
Plus radio and air conditioning option...
How many cc or HP and how about automatic transmission,
my ride has it.
Interesting, thanks.

By the way, who's the manufacturer and where is it made?

Hi guf
17 hours is a little long.
If you come back from work at 6pm and go back to work at 6am
that's only 12 hours of charging (1110V.)
I know that the battery is rarely completely empty and you don't do 12 hours shift.
Anyway, the solution is  really charging at 220V.
Thanks for the info.

Hey Guy,

I should 'fess up - 84mpg is the highway (where it'll do 100mph (but it won't get 84mpg at that speed)) rating. Realistically, the city mileage is 49/gal. Still, that isn't bad for a vehicle that'll keep you dry when it rains (and that stays upright when it isn't moving). It will be manufactured in a former Hummer factory in Louisiana - anticipated roll-out is this summer. The manufacturer is Elio (Paul's - engineer/founder) last name. It will be $6,800 with a radio and air conditioning. In case it wasn't apparent, it's a two seater (front/back). It's not fancy, but it ought to be fun to drive.

Hi Kevin.
Very interesting.
A mini or baby Hummer on three wheels. :lol:6,800 USD with radio and AC and high millage per gallon, that will be interesting t follow.
I wonder how it will compared to the fourtwo or is it the twofour?
The other important question is:
How about the after sales service network?
Where can you get it repaired?
I don't think it will be exported to Vietnam,
unless it's partially assembled here.
That's what most of the big names do, like:
Mercedes, Fiat, etc...
I wonder if they will export it to Canada
and how it would handle in our snow storm?

When I worked for Honda back in the early 90's, they had a Civic VX that did 45 MPG.
That was a simple ordinary fuel injected four cylinder. No batteries, nothing "hybrid", no turbos, nothing fancy to achieve that economy.
It had all the bells and whistles (of the time), with A/C, so there were no sacrifices in that aspect.

Twenty years later......we haven't made much if any progress at all. I'm really not impressed with todays technology.
Now days, I'm working for Volvo. Some of the 2015 models will have turbos and superchargers, and are designed for the engine to die while sitting at stops. All in an effort to save gas. But it's still no better than that 20 year old Civic.
What gives?

Are you driving the full range so when you get home its dead?  My commute is ~25miles round trip so I could get by on 110v over night to full charge.  I have had a 220v charging station installed which cuts a FULL charge down to ~4hr.  That said, if I was only using it for work 110v would be enough.

The original Honda Insight which started production back in 1998 was EPA rated at 70 mpg! People have reported getting 100 mpg with careful driving. One person even drove 2254.4 miles on a 10.6 gallon tank. What the hell, Honda? I've also seen aftermarket chips / professional tuneups for these cars which, more regularly, can make the car get 100-115 mpg. I don't understand why this technology isn't still available / produced.

Hi guf.
I wonder how electric car would do in January in Montreal Canada when the thermometer can go down often to -30C?
How about the batteries, they usually loose their charge as temperature goes down and the heater and window defrost ? ? ?
That the reason why all electric vehicles will never be popular in Montreal, Canada,
unless you want to do the same as motorcycles, drive them only in the summer season.

Guy 13
yeah turning on any thing affects the overall milage and temp does affect battery life. I am in sf the the weather is between 55 and 70 95% of the time. I have heard the safety rating isn't great on them, and driving in hard rain is a little sketchy for me. but over all i love it.

At the end of the day this is not really a solution in the US.  We have not accepted the use of single seaters,M'cycles and scooters as the rest of the world has.  Just enclosing it will not fix that imvho.  The "no new technologies" is an issue for me.  We need to push things forward.  I took my neighbor's Tesla Model S for an extended test drive yesterday.  While it is currently out of my price range, you guys are doing yourself a disservice not taking one for a spin.  It really is a game changer and can do things a IC car never will.

What gives?

My old 90 model CRX HF would get 56 mpg on the highway.

One year I drove it to CES. 2,400 miles round trip from Iowa Park, TX to Las Vegas, NV, plus driving all over Vegas and everywhere else on $80 worth of gas.  :thumb:

That was a unique engine design. It had a primary and secondary combustion chamber design that made it very efficient. It was also a long stroke design that made good low end torque but not much horsepower up top. The car was also light weight at only 2100 pounds. And it was geared high. So it maintained a low rpm on the highway. It had a lot going for it.

If you ran the AC those highway mpg's dropped into the mid to upper 40's though.

The 2100 lbs is the key to old economy cars fuel efficiency. Modern safety standards won't allow it. And modern cars are not as slow either.

My friend had a Honda fit that is pretty c close to the old econo boxes but it is faster,  safer and larger...

That's true too ^^^
Cars now have dozens of electric motors so we have "power everything". Lord knows we can't manually slide a temp knob or adjust our mirrors, or move our seat forward, we have to press a button to ask a computer on one of the networks to then have an electric motor carry out that function for us.  :duh:

I have had the old girl since I drove her off the lot some 14y 11m ago. I've considered putting some bigger all-terrain tire on her, but then I'm not sure I would be able to practice my drifting around the light poles when it snows. A fresh covering of snow in a parking lot makes a perfect canvas to draw/drift on. My buddy was squealing like a girl that we were going get stuck, I kicked him and his skirt out to take this picture.

The avatar is my daily work grind.

loving_it....Nice lift you have there "Loving It",  sometimes I miss my old 79 F250. It had a 6" lift with 38's and a 3 speed w/ a granny low.
I probably couldn't afford to drive it these day, back in the mid 80's I was spending about $5 a day for gas to go about 12 miles to and from work. Looked something like this with less chrome molding and more lights. It was rather fun helping the shorter women up in the cab, they thought I was being nice when I open the door for them. You got to put your hand somewhere when your pushing them in the cab  :o  :nono:

You'll get the fun factor & good fuel mileage, but long term reliability with many German cars (V-Dubs included) can be spotty IMO. Spend $30 for a subscription to Consumer Reports and look at the statistics on VW's, they aren't pretty in my book. I spent 15 years working for Mercedes-Benz and VW dealers in a past work life and many of the cars we sold were not what I'd call overly reliable. It's funny though, some were trouble free and others were going home to the dealer for service constantly. I work with one current VW GTI owner that has had no problems for the first three years and another owns a four year old diesel Jetta wagon that is in the shop for major work every four or five months. I love German cars with a passion, but I spend my money on Acuras. They're not as well engineered as a BMW from the perspective of the driving experience, but commuting 75 miles a day to work means I want something  solidly reliable. I'll trade ultimate driving experience for better peace of mind and lower maintenance bills.

Isn't that the same with all cars?  I have a VW Jetta wagon (diesel), about 4 (or five?) years old now, no problems whatsoever.  For instance, you give the N=1 example of your Acura, but that doesn't mean Acuras are any more reliable than other cars.  And even if you buy the Consumer Report's best car, you could still get a lemon.  Personally, I can't stand Consumer Reports and many times buy exactly what they say not to buy.
Title: Re: Your daily driver :)

In view of the recommendations and observations offered by Consumer Reports on audio matters, my tendency is to dismiss them entirely. But I have to concede readily that what they say about cars, particularly in the area of reliability, is well supported by the reports found in other automobile evaluation agencies, my own experience, and anecdotal tales such as the one shared by Photon46 above.
Do you really employ doing the opposite of qualified and respected test results as a strategy?

I would maintain that the Japanese have eaten our lunch on quality control ever since the 1950s. If not for intervention by the U.S. government, Harley-Davidson would have disappeared due to its inability to compete with Honda, et al. Where are the US television manufacturers? Which American made camera do you prefer? What's your favorite American made stereo receiver?

While I would agree that most Japanese cars seem downright cheaply made vis a vis the offerings from Europe, I maintain that the likes of Toyota and Honda have raised the reliability standards for every surviving car manufacturer on earth.

My two cars are a 2006 Toyota Prius and a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 2wd. Both were bought used, both have over 100,000 miles, and both are impeccably reliable. I have owned, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, VW in the past and will not do so again after a conversation I had with a man out here who owns a BMW, Audi, VW, Mini exclusive repair shop. He basically said the same thing that you can read in Photon's comment just preceding mine above.

Seems like no car maker is immune from reliability issues. Some recent recall data could be worth looking at.

You've got valid points. One example does not point to a larger trend. As I said, I worked for Benz and Volkswagen for fifteen years and I do have a long term perspective on many examples of the breed. You are of course correct that there are many individual examples of both marques that have been reliable. I knew many owners who remained loyal to both brands and had exemplary luck with their cars. At the end of my stint in the auto business, I also worked for Acura for two years and I saw a number of trouble stricken examples of that brand too. I admit to personal prejudice against one particular aspect found in a number of German cars: a peculiar insistence on making systems (particularly electrical) more complex than necessary. We used to joke that the entrance to German automotive electrical engineering departments were crowned with a banner than read "Why make it simple when we can make it complicated!" It's all a matter of degree and perspective though, the last days of USA Fiat as far as reliability and parts supply issues go make any problems I saw with German cars look miniscule.

I couldn't agree with you more about many of Consumers Reports recommendations. Their perspective on electronics, cameras, and many other products is pitifully utilitarian and displays lazy evaluation methodology. However, their repair history charts are not subjective data. Those figures are compiled from reports by actual owners  and I have to give some credence to the reported statistics. I suppose there's always an element of unhappy customers being more vocal than happy campers, but that factor would seem to be irrelevant in this instance unless one brand's unhappy customer is more likely to report problems than another.

As to your point regarding getting a lemon even if a product is highly rated, you are of course right again. (It's happened to me more than once.) But we're talking about odds here, not specific individual examples.

I went for the 2.3L EcoBoost and it's a friggin' blast to drive. It's only about a second slower than the 5.0 in a 1/4 plus I get 32mpg on the highway (assuming I keep my foot out of it).

So I see there's a few Fiat fans around here. You guys will get a kick out of this post then...  :green:

I bought a new '13 Abarth on a Wednesday.

That Saturday, my brother bought a new '13 Abarth Cabrio.

Nine months later in December, I buy a '15 Pop for my girlfriend.

Then in the following month, my other brother buys a '15 Abarth Automatic (far left).

Those with a keen eye will notice that mine is a little different. It now has black Abarth graphics on the sides as well as black mirrors. This is because my first Abarth was totaled four days before the first payment was due. Some schmuck pulled out in front of me as I was doing almost 30 mph and he was doing more than 45 mph! My car came clear off the ground (all four wheels in the air), did a 180 and landed facing the way I just came! I walked away perfectly fine immediately after with just a tiny cut on my forehead from one of the 9 airbags that went off.

My "new" one is a bit modifed... Full intake, full exhaust, suspension, and the best part, ECU flash tune. Stock power 160 hp & 170 ft lbs torque. Now I'm pushing just over 240 hp and a little over 250 ft lbs torque, all from a tiny 1.4L motor! My brothers just have intakes on theirs.

My daily driver is sadly and terrifyingly compromised :( After replacing the turbo a month ago, this week it has a bad injector... that won't come out of the motor.  i had to hitchhike home from the mechanics shop, and now await further news...

hey greg,
I've had six 240 Volvos, current one has 365k on the original motor, looking for a red 93 wagon.
great car!

Yeah, its been a great ride. It still drives better than my 2010 Mazda.
A few electrical issues over the years... overdrive relay,  poor connections here and there, The worst fuse holder ever made !!

Was pricey in its day. I recall paying $20k new. Usual  maintenance costs aside, I can't complain about 19 years without a car payment !!

365K on original motor ? WOW !!  That's a lot of timing belts over the years !

I've got an '87 740 GL Sedan.  Purchased 4 years ago from original owner (late 80's age) moving into a retirement home.  It was a garage queen that only had 60,000 original miles on it.  Had it completely serviced, timing belt, tires, complete exhaust, most stuff from it just sitting and lack of use.  Surprisingly, it has a the original (or near original) battery in it that works as new.

One continual issue we have with it is keeping the rear tail lights functioning.  They are continually blowing bulbs.  2 years ago, I bought complete new tail light replacement assemblies.  What I've learned is the tail light housing is a very poor design.  The flexible plastic / copper foil circuit, ratchet twist in light bulb holders and the plastic (red) housing traps too much heat causing short bulb life, cracks and water leaks (start of the spiraling failures)  Do you guys have similar tail light issues on your Volvo's?  I've considered building custom "guts" of LED replacement parts, but not enough time to work on it currently.

Funny you mention the taillights. I told a very nice little old lady just today that her '87 240 needs brake light circuit boards to pass state inspection and Volvo doesn't make them anymore. I told her I'd try to find some in the aftermarket that she could buy online and bring them to me (since we don't have a company C/C). She's not very happy with me right now.  :|

Thanks Jerry, yea...I put the part number in Google and found a place that sells them (a few dollars higher than yours), but I told her she needed to buy them, and we'd install them.
Well....She thinks we're a halfassed company for even asking her to do that.  :duh:

Thank you.  I don't think my failure issue is the circuit itself, but the light socket (with bulb) twist lock in to it.  The metal tangs on the light socket just don't keep proper tension to the cooper traces and I suspect with the road vibrations, etc. they are continually taxed and loosening and not making good electrical connections.  I may look into soldering them to the cooper with a light gauge wire.  It definitely needs some garage mechanic trial and error fix'n.

Thanks
Kenreau

2016 Ford Fiesta ST

By far the most fun car I've ever owned. Excellent handling, surprising power (see below), great gas mileage (mid 30s), and very inexpensive (under $17k new after discounts).   I also really like how lots of torque is available at low RPM, which is unlike all other 4 cylinders I've owned.

Currently have a drop in filter and "stage 1" tune.  I just recently started experimenting with virtual dyno.  Not a lot of power, but it moves the 2,700 pound car fairly well, especially considering it's only a 1.6 L.  I expect the power to increase by a significant amount when I get a chance to test in cooler weather.  I also have parts on order to move this to a "stage 3", and will also be getting a pro tune.    Never had a car I enjoyed as much as this, and actually look forward to my work commute now :)

My son just sold his '03 CLK500 AMG. A close relative to yours. Neat car!
What kind of MPG do you get?
Title: Re: Your daily driver :)
Post by: mcgsxr on 16 Apr 2019, 01:48 pm
Bob I think the 03 and 05 CLK500 are the same car.

The AMG package on these was nothing like the CL55 AMG - that's a real AMG car.  The package on the CLK was rims, and a body kit.  Mine has it, but does not have the AMG badging (and I won't add it).  No performance advantages unless you get the sport suspension, but that's quite rare in my experience.

I use it just for fun, and drove it 3K miles last summer.  On average I get 19mpg.  I am usually found on secondary roads, avoiding actual traffic.
Title: Re: Your daily driver :)
Post by: Bob in St. Louis on 16 Apr 2019, 02:57 pm
Roger that.
Yea, I thought the 5.0 was "strong", but wasn't impressed by the AMG badging after a quick test drive. I was excited to drive it the first time when he bought it but thought the AMG would have more 'pep'. So it makes sense what you're saying about the 55 versus the 500. On the way home from dropping it off when he was buying it, he and I did a little ol fashion street racing. He handed me my ass, but had a definite advantage since I was in my '02 YukonXL with 265,000 miles.  So I guess I can't saw much about the power.
Beautiful car though, and overall very fun to drive.
Title: Re: Your daily driver :)
Post by: mcgsxr on 16 Apr 2019, 03:25 pm
No argument.  It's way more of a luxo-cruiser than a sports car.

Just what I was looking for, coming out of the 69 T Bird.

The 5.0 is plenty of fun for me.

The hand build 5.5 in the CLK55 is a WHOLE other ballgame, along with bigger brakes - all the real AMG stuff.

Understood. Personally, I'd want the 55 (although I've never driven one), however the last thing my 20 year kid needs is more horsepower to the rear wheels.  :o

... Personally, I'd want the 55 (although I've never driven one),...
I had a '55 for several years.  The 6V system was a PITA until I finally got over the "original" BS and converted it to 12V.
Like a boat, the best days were the day I bought it and the day I sold it.  Fun to drive, way overpowered.  Scared the hell out of me on a straightaway at 125mph and still pulling strong.
This one is just like mine.

I picked up one of these ~6 months ago...

(https://i.postimg.cc/XNFb5PRV/Grey-1-LE-2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7bxd8KPc)

It's amazing. The '16+ Camaro is basically a Caddy ATS/CTS with the LT1 V8 making 455 hp/tq. It gets over 20 mpg avg and can do high 20s on the highway. Handling is it's strong suit, especially the 1LE version with e-lsd, mag ride, 305/285 width tires, etc.

I live in town, work from home and don't drive a lot, I use my bike for most local errands so I don't put a ton of miles on the car, but I really enjoy driving when I do. I'm looking forward to some Autocross and track days this summer.  :D

It's also great for carrying bikes and gear, although limited to 2 people. With the V8 it barely notices the bikes and extra weight, it actually gets FAR better fuel economy on the highway vs my previous Subarus when carrying bikes.

We got a really great end of year cash deal on a brand new, nearly loaded, 2019 BMW X2 M35i a few weeks ago and had a two week wait for it to be delivered from South Carolina. Here it is in the bay before we drove it home. It's small, but it's a total beast! From BMW: "2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo delivers a stunning 302hp and 332 lb-ft of torque – making it the most powerful production 4-cylinder built by BMW". All-wheel-drive and 0-60 in 4.8 seconds 8) We live in downtown Houston, so a lot of city driving, and we are averaging 30MPG. It's the best car either of us have ever owned.

Dave,

That is a pretty Camaro. Not sure I could ever bring myself to buy one but it seems like I’ve owned most everything else so why not?!

It's been a week short of a year of ownership now, and I still think it's an amazing car. I've taken it to a couple autocross races and plan on hitting a some tracks, but I managed to dislocate my shoulder a few weeks ago so waiting for that to heal up. It's the RHS, I can still shift but not quickly and it hurts like a mofo, one of the most painful injuries I've received. We have a local driving school that' supposed to be really good so I'll call in a couple weeks and see if I can schedule some time with a few friends.

It's also a great car for cruising on the highway, .5:1 6th gear and it just gets better fuel economy the faster you go... like 30 mpg at 90 mph!

If you can live with the tradeoffs of limited space, visibility, etc. I don't think you'll regret getting one. If anything, it's too good... it doesn't have that fast seat of the pants feel, and 100 mph feels just like 50 mph except the scenery goes by faster. But at autocross it's like driving a big go-cart, it feels small and very maneuverable, it kills slaloms and does things almost telepathically.

I wouldn't call it a daily driver but let's just say we've put about 5k miles on it since early June. End of the month, we're headed down to Kentucky with a few other couples in convertibles to do a day at the races and few days on the Bourbon Trail.

Absolutely love this thing. Like motorcity said, the (Bose) stereo sucks but the exhaust notes MORE than make up for it.

GT86. Started running track events last year and got hooked. I ran 11 track days this year, but the season is now done and snow tires are mounted. Yep, my track car is also my winter driver. Here is a photo the morning before a BMW Car Club event in Brainerd International Raceway this summer.

I am with Zuman for picking up older nice cars at highly depreciated initial cost.  Maintenance may still be a fun adventure, but the car itself certainly rings all the right bells.

My own 2005 find, picked it up about 4 years ago now.  Still in storage, will bring it out in April after enough rain washes away all the road salt.

Ok. It's just used to haul stuff.  My daily driver is a 2013 Camry. It's been a great car and was under $21k new.

Biking for my local transportation for 48 years, my daily driver is a much sweeter ride than it appears - for some very good reasons. My several regular use bikes all get disassembled somewhat right off the showroom floor. From there, an ugly paint scheme is applied, along with fake rust and dirt. The maker's badges and all indications of quality components are covered up or removed.

All this helps ensure, even in a community with heavy bike theft problems, that I can lock it up with a plain cable lock in any area of town, even overnight at times and find it still there when I return. Knock on wood I will, but I have not ever had a bike stolen. (the scheme is not for everyone I do understand - I too would prefer to keep my nice brightly colored bike with the shiny new components - but such is not my real world)

This one has a low fuss and highly durable eight speed internal hub "transmission"; well made aluminum frame; good in all weather hub based brakes. Other customizations obvious for utilitarian duty include: baskets, upright handlebars and a seat more appropriate to a backside that is 45 years or so out of college.

Yers, John

Picked mine up beginning of last year before the chip shortage caused prices to skyrocket.   Believe it or not, I got ~$10K off the sticker price.   Good luck trying to find that nowadays.   I could probably sell it for what I paid, one year and 13K miles later.

Ordered a Lexus 300h, should be here within a month.  Not the sexiest car in the world, but the near ideal for me.  Have owned several Camrys and like their reliability and economy.  My current one is 10 years old with 263k miles on it with only minor problems.  Test drove a 300h, gutsier, smoother, and quieter than my Camry and looks better than the current Camrys which to me are gimmicky.  And frankly Toyota service has gotten to be a hassle.  Supposed to get 44 mpg, which would be nice, and young guy to show us how all the gadgets work.  Will hopefully be my last car.

The new Golf R are super fun. Not all out hot hatch like the R32 was where it gives up normal life drivablity but keeps just enough of the fun stuff to be good and sporty on the backroads.

The new R is a really refined vehicle. I had a good laugh today with my wife in the car for the first time. I had it in Comfort Mode and she said "this feels the same as your old GTI". I pushed the blue "R" button on the steering wheel and put the car in Race Mode, then stepped on the accelerator. Pretty sure she'll never say that again

It's the 2nd slowest Tesla, but still does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds.  And instant 100% torque at any speed.

Driving it around kind of messes with my head because I've always associated this level of speed and power with pretty loud engines.  But this car is silent.  It's brutally fast and whisper quiet.  Now that I'm getting used to it, it's pretty damn cool.
