i got this refurbished HP from tiger direct - lease return about 2 years ago. Never really got a chance to hook up. tried today and it keep saying to restore and when i check ok it gives me "error 1" and the whole process starts again. Not sure if tiger direct will give me any tech support. all the boxes and paper work are somewhere in the house and not readily available. any suggestions ?
TIA
-
What is the OS?
If no valuable file is in the HD I could reinstall the OS to a free W10 if the chipset allow or reinstall a W-XP if a smaller OS is suited to an slower processor.
-
it came with windows 7 professional 64 bit
HP Compaq 8200 Elite Desktop PC - Intel Core i5-2400 3.10GHz, 8GB DDR3 Memory, 1TB HDD, DVDRW, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
this is the info i have from my invoice.
cannot believe this was in 11/2015!!!
-
A nice machine, any more detail on the error?
-
it simply says "error 1" while trying to restore. and when i close that window - the whole process starts again and ends with the same error.
i don't get the option to start with windows 7.

Symptoms of Code 1 (Error 1)
“Code 1” appears and crashes the active program window.
“This device is not configured correctly.” is displayed when attaching a new hardware device to your computer.
Your PC frequently crashes with Error 1 when trying to use the same hardware device.
Windows runs sluggishly and responds slowly to mouse or keyboard input.
Your computer periodically “freezes” for a few seconds at a time.
These 1 error messages can appear during program installation, while a Microsoft Corporation-related software program (eg. Windows Operating System) is running, during Windows startup or shutdown, or even during the installation of the Windows operating system. Keeping track of when and where your Code 1 error occurs is a critical piece of information in troubleshooting the problem.
Causes of Code 1 (Error 1)
Incorrectly configured, old, or corrupted device drivers. (very common)
Corruption in Windows registry from a recent software change (install or uninstall).
Virus or malware infection that has corrupted Windows system files or related drivers.
Driver conflict after installing new hardware.
Faulty hardware.
Device Manager Errors such as “Code 1” can be caused by a variety of factors, so it is important that you troubleshoot each of the possible causes to prevent it from recurring.

-
i don't have the disc - not sure if the computer actually with the disc or the OS pre-installed.
-
It should have the basic system to allow further OS instalment.
-
pardon my IT naivety - where do i start.
connect the monitor, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable and power up !
what comes next?
-
If the OS is not installed after the power-on the basic system will allow you begin the OS installation, of course you need to have the OS in DVD media on hand.
-
i am not sure if the computer actually came with the CD/DVD for the OS.
-
So You may need a DVD driver mounting in this case.
The DVD driver is not opening the drawer?
-
i am not sure what you are asking
-
The DVD is not opening the drawer?
-
do you mean the dvd media tray on the computer next to the power button?
-
Correct.
If it dont have DVD you may install the OS from an Pen driver.
-
ok. but i will need to download something on the pen drive - right. what do i need to download and from where ?

System restore error 1

First try to restore in Safe Mode

Second, forgetabout Windows 7, I would go straight to 10, it is faster and more stable than 7 ever was. If 7 is installed but not booting (starting) then go to the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool website to download the Windows 10 .iso and create a bootable DVD or thumbdrive. Of course you will have to use a working computer to do this.
Insert the new DVD or thumb drive in the dead computer and restart, you may have to change the booting order in the BIOS ( hit Delete button during power up, you have to be quick)
You should qualify for a free Windows 10 upgrade, if it doesn't work what do you have to lose, it's broken already.
Note: If an official Windows 7 is installed there should be a sticker somewhere on or inside the computer (or on your receipt) with the Windows 7 25-character serial number.

-
Thanks FRM and WGH.
I will first attempt to restore in safe mode. If successful - great.
Then look for windows10 upgrade.
Computer case does have a sticker on the side with some numbers- hope that is the original 25 digits that I need.
-
Go into the bios. See if it is in ahci or raid mode. Try the other one that it isn't set at.
If the pc hasn't been on for a long time it probably lost the bios settings from bad battery.
I see this a lot in laptops.
David
-
Good idea David, as it stay 2 years stored maybe the BIOS battery has died. Would be nice before further software installation change the battery and try power on the PC again. Usually is a cheap CR2032 coin battery.
-
i tried both the steps recommended by WGH - but no luck.
somehow the computer is still trying to restore and when i check continue i keep getting error 1.
i must have accidentally interrupted the restore process by powering off the computer :duh: :duh:.
I see there the computer case has product sticker with the 25 digit product key.
Is it possible to just clean the software from the hard drive and then do a fresh install of Windows Pro 7 and maybe let upgrade to windows Pro 10 ?
-
Computers these days usually don't come with a Windows installation disk because you can download the iso and make your own. Yea, if your computers gone bonkers then you have to use a another computer to do this.
As I mentioned previously - download the Windows 10 Pro file and burn it to a DVD or make a bootable thumb drive. This should be the first thing you do. Do this on your working computer, but you knew that, right?
Create installation media for Windows. Click on the Windows 10 link and then the "Download Tool Now" button to download the iso file.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media)
You don't need to install Windows 7 first because you have the 25-character product key. Why not? Because you are going to do a clean install and the Windows 10 install will wipe everything off the disk anyway. Previously, Microsoft forced users to upgrade to Windows 10 before they could start fresh and do a clean install–which was annoyingly complicated and time-consuming. Now, things are much easier, since you can activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 key.
Next, you will have to burn the iso image to make a boot disk. Every computer seems to handle this differently, you can Google "burn iso" and include the operating system you are using or download a free iso app like Free ISO Burner http://www.freeisoburner.com/ (http://www.freeisoburner.com/) , install and follow the directions to burn a boot disk. (are we having fun yet?)
Part 3 - make sure the broken computer has a internet connection
Part 4 - turn on the broken computer. Don't think, just turn it on. Is it on now? That's a good boy. Open the CD drive and insert the boot disk you just made. Close drawer. Turn off computer.
Part 5 - Turn on Computer and boot from the disk drive or flash drive.

Part 6 - Enjoy the Windows 10 installation journey, it will take a while because the installation program will connect with the Microsoft Mothership to download updated files and drivers for your computer.

This program just ended on dec 31st.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade)
Depending on what the pc is for, I might just reinstall win7 on it, and call it a day.

I thought Microsoft's free Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade program was long over?
You are right, that's a surprise. I guess I'm 36 days behind on my reading. Good thing the Windows 7 iso is still available at the above link.
Nothing wrong with Windows 7, I liked it
-
I did try to download windows 7 pro 64 bit - the site asked for the 25 digit key code - which I punched in - I got the message that this product key is for preinstalled version only and to contact the seller for software recovery - I contacted Tiger Direct - and they have no records before Jan 2016 !!
-
You now have 3 options:
1.) Try Windows 10 upgrade anyway, as of Jan. 23, 2018 it still worked:

3.) Give the computer flying lessons

If that forbes article is correct, you can buy a cheap windows 7 license
https://www.dealscube.com/listing/microsoft-windows-7-professional-32-64bits-for-1-pc/20345?gclid=CjwKEAjwps2_BRC5jduHor-h8xESJADGT-Ltjy5vgcdO6ch1TvybflH1Fv33OU7rn3P7n2owtEoywRoCvCbw_wcB (https://www.dealscube.com/listing/microsoft-windows-7-professional-32-64bits-for-1-pc/20345?gclid=CjwKEAjwps2_BRC5jduHor-h8xESJADGT-Ltjy5vgcdO6ch1TvybflH1Fv33OU7rn3P7n2owtEoywRoCvCbw_wcB)
And then upgrade it to win 10. To upgrade, you would need the windows 10 iso, and put it on a bootable usb stick.
I bought a couple windows 7 licenses from the above link with no problem.
You don't get any physical media. So even for windows 7, you need to download the iso, and make a bootable stick.
It's pretty easy to make a stick with the microsoft utility, but I think I used a different utility the last time I made a stick.

Allow me to step in with a semi-hijack. I have a friend who tried to set up a NUC with Roon Core. He has NO computer knowledge and failed. He has asked me to install Windows 10 and JRiver (no insult to Roon here - it is simply that I have used JRiver for 10 years and can help him keep it running). When I turn on the NUC I get what looks like a DOS message saying that it's OS is "RoonOS 1.0 (build150) stable". How do I get Windows 10 onto this thing?
-
"RoonOS 1.0 (build150) stable".
Seems a informative msg not a error msg.
-

glynnw never said it was an error message.
When you boot from the Windows 10 media (DVD disk or USB drive with disk image) it will detect an existing OS and should ask if you want to install in the existing partition and format the partition and overwrite the existing OS.
If either of those bootable media don't boot and it still boots directly into Roon OS you will have to enter the BIOS and enable DVD or USB as first boot device.
-
Thanks - I figured I would need a disc. Lucky for me I just realized one of my retired friends was a Linux database mgr. I'll be calling him soon. Thanks again.

Hey Randy ,
Great link. Is there a reason why I cannot order windows 10 pro from the same website for the same price?
Why go through the hassle of getting windows 7 pro and then upgrade to 10 pro. Am I missing something here?
-
The update from W7 to 10 is free.
-
I get that. But the price for window 7 pro and windows 10 pro is also the same.
-
Have you already determined which OS your PC has?
Already change the battery?
-
It has window 7 pro. No battery change. Not sure why battery change is needed.
-

My thinking is that since you have to download the Windows 10 iso to make a boot disk anyway, see if it works with your product key.
As you found out while trying to download Windows 7, your key is a factory and not a retail key so it may not work. But no harm in trying.
Paul Thurrott writes:
"Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate product keys can activate Windows 10 Pro. It has to be a retail key, not a key that came with a computer. And it has to be unused, though there is some anecdotal evidence that even used keys will work in some cases. (And you could always call Microsoft support, explain the situation, and try for a phone activation.)"
If it doesn't work then install the retail Windows 7 and either live with it or try going for the Windows 10 update.
-

The little dime shaped battery is on the motherboard and keeps the BIOS chip energized so it doesn't forget hard drive and other settings when the computer is off or unplugged, pretty cool huh?
-
Just ordered the windows 7 pro. Will wait for the product key to be edelivered.

ok guys - got the product key for windows 7 pro - now what ?

I've used Rufus before, and it works well.
The guy you ordered windows 7 from should have also provided a download link for the iso file. You can use that to reload windows 7.
windows 10 you'll have to download from microsoft

somehow i was able to install windows 7 pro. i am trying to get the updates for the software or maybe even update to windows 10 pro - however i don't get internet to work. I tried different ethernet cables but i get the same message - network adapter not working - requires driver updates !!
how should i proceed ?
-
how should i proceed ?
Get on another computer, go to the HP website Support area and download the latest Windows 7 network adapter driver for that model computer to a USB stick, then update the driver on the HP with it.
Steve
-
does the usb stick need to new or can i use a stick with some other data on it ? the smallest i have is 32gb right now - maybe i can download, update driver and then delete the data

No, you're not making a bootable USB for the driver, you just need enough room on the USB stick to download the file - it won't be a huge download, certainly < than 100MB.
Steve
-
ok. let me go to the HP website and see what i can find. thanks
-
the HP web site shows 8 different network drivers - which should i download - or just get all of them ?
-
You need to install the correct one. Are there 8 different possible network adapter drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or Windows 7 64-bit, whichever OS you have?
Check Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters and see if the adapter has been recognized, rather than showing up under the Unknown Devices heading. That might point you to the correct one.
-
under device manager i don't see any network adapters - rather i see "other devices" and under that there are 4 options each with a yellow inverted triangle - ethernet controller, pci serial port, pci simple communication and sm bus controller.
not sure what this means?
-
You have 4 devices that Windows could not find a suitable driver for, nor could it identify them by brand and model. Obviously, the network adapter is the most important - once you have a working Internet connection Windows may be able to then find suitable drivers for the other 3 unidentified devices.
Is there an option on the HP Support site to enter an HP computer serial # which might further help to identify which network adapter you have? If not, you can download them all and try to install the driver one at a time until you get the correct driver software.
Just make sure you are downloading Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit drivers depending on which OS you have.
-
i was able to google the hardware specs on the machine and discovered that under network interface it list Intel Pro 1000 gigabit
HP driver support also has the same name as one of the 8 options - so i am presuming that this is one to get
advice ?
-
Do it!
-
downloaded the said drivers and now installing on the machine. fingers crossed !!
lets hope for the best!!
-
it worked. i am online. updating windows OS !!
Hurray.
thanks a million for your help!!
-
Excellent! Let me know if further updates find drivers for the other devices. :thumb:
-
machine is downloading and installing 12 critical updates. once completed and computer restarted i will recheck the status of those 4 devices.
does the OS come with some basic built in antivirus protection ?
-
Windows 10 has Windows Defender built in but you will have to download something for Windows 7.
You can download the free Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14210/security-essentials-download
Everyone has their own favorite free anti-virus. I use Avast, but there are certainly other contenders.
https://www.avast.com/en-us/index
-
this post is from the fixed computer.
once updates are installed i will try to get the microsoft essentials.
the display has VGA connections. If i want to change to HDMI connection - should i get a video card or just get an VGA-HDMI adapter?
-
If you mean the HP computer only has a VGA output on the display adapter, you're not really going to improve your display quality by converting to HDMI (in fact sometimes it can make it worse).
Basic HDMI video cards that do a great job for HD video (not gaming) are relatively inexpensive.
-
this machine will be for little kids to do some basic gaming and computing. any basic video card with HDMI output would work. i am fortunate to have two CRT monitors with VGA otherwise i wouldn't be able to connect this machine to a monitor. i understand that the card has to be low profile since the machine is small factor form.
-
a quick search at frys electronics shows this one
MSI GeForce GT 710 2GB 64-Bit DDR3 Graphics Card
any thoughts ?
-
seems like machine is stuck at installing number 10 update - maybe it is a big file
who knows !!
-
Yeah, give it plenty of time.
Just be glad you didn't have an older version of Windows 7. I reinstalled 7 from my original disk which was Service Pack 1. There were several hundred updates to get it to the most current state beyond Service Pack 3!
The MSI is as good a choice as any. Their drivers are usually pretty solid.
You can also save a couple bucks from one of my go-to suppliers, B&H Photo (unless you've got some kind of Fry's Promo Code deal).
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1234274-REG/msi_gt_710_2gd3h_lp_geforce_gtx_710_graphics.html

still at update 10.
i will check out B and H link.
-
i don't have any frys code etc except that i can go pick it up on my way home and easy to return if needed.
-
You can get Fry's codes by signing up for email advertisements.

Bizarre that I can answer an IT question. I just took my new laptop in to the shop, because it wouldn't load the new HUGE 10 update. It's so damn big, the if your internet has any interruption, aborts and start again on the next startup. In my case, this went on for weeks. I've only got one real option for internet, being a rural customer, so my speed is slow, expensive, and not always dependable. The guys at the shop said nearly all their rural customers are bringing in the their computers because none of the them can load the update. If you can connect to a faster connection and leave it overnight, you can probably avoid hiring a pro and incurring a charge.
-
Do you have WiFi or cable modem?
-
Do you have WiFi or cable modem?
WiFi on a DSL, but hooking up a cable didn't solve the problem. Even the pros with a T1 took a couple of hours.
-
My link was and yet is today just 1M and the W10 download lasts about 12 hours, the update 3 to 4 hours, I believe these downloads have check points for save time;

Um, guys .... if you read soundofrockets posts you will see when he says "seems like machine is stuck at installing number 10 update - maybe it is a big file", he is referring to number 10 (of 12) updates for Windows 7, not Windows 10.
If he later decides to upgrade to Windows 10 and has problems, then perhaps these Windows 10 upgrade comments will be more meaningful. ;)
-
This round of Windows 10 updates are massive. After the download it can take hours for the update to fully install once downloaded especially on older machines. I believe it's due in part to multiple parties all trying to address the thing themselves instead of coordinating between H/W, S/W and A/V vendors. Now they are all patching the patches.
If you have a slow connection and need to apply a large patch consider visiting your local library if it's not too far away and has decent speed connection. You can have friend put the patch on a USB stick and postal mail it to you.
Back to the OP. If the machine is stuck on patch 10 of 12 and has been that way for 24 hours I would hit the power off button and restart the machine. Occasionally Windows gets stuck at which point there's no choice but to reboot (and pray).
-

Ok, that's more like it. I was surprised that I had anything to offer on a computer question, and I didn't. :duh:

Steve is right - I was referring to the 10 of 12 updates. I was able to complete it today AM. It just went faster today AM. I hope that the OS is stable. I think I have to change some settings in the BIOS since every time the windows launches I get asked question about launching windows7 or restore. I thing that windows should launch 7 directly every time.
Should I try to upgrade to Windows 10 later tonite?

I would first make sure you have the latest BIOS firmware from HP and fix the settings issue above and then go for it! Actually I would make sure I had all of the latest HP drivers for it but I am not sure if this is relevant for a Windows 10 upgrade.

Yes it should. You may also find a tool that will automatically scan the machine for HP updates (graphics, wifi card drivers, etc.) and assist with downloading and installing them.

W10 are doing update in PC drivers automatic, on my PC first time was an video card driver, second time was an sound card driver.
On the video driver I had to send the W10 find the driver, but in the second case the W10 has fixed itself, very nice.

seems like there are tons of critical updates to window 7 pro that need to be downloaded and installed. Doing couple at a time - if i do all of them the computer seems to freeze.
Unable to download/install HP Support Assistant - will try once all the critical updates are downloaded and installed.
-
updates from today.
still no luck.
got a new product key for windows 10 pro. downloaded the software on a thumb drive and attempted the install. i get an error "0x8007025D" and install gets cancelled.
Not sure what the heck is going on?

Don't know if this will be useful.
