Interesting history of low frequency nutrition...

I have been looking into this stuff for awhile now, not having been interested in the past too much in subs. When I built these two LARGE 50 inch bass transmission lines of Greg Monfort's design, I got a whole new lease on bass life. Now hooked on wide range drivers, horns and open baffles, they become a necessity.

The idea of sealed boxes is a given. With wide rangers speed becomes paramount in importance, especially with a ClariT amp, because the thing is soo damn "fast." Attack transients are blinding!!

For a smaller room like mine and presumably like Richard's, I would  SERIOUSLY look at the Adire Audio Koda 8. www.adireaudio.com  these are the guys with the XBL motor tech., and it keeps up with about any 10, and alot of 12 inch drivers apparently. You could mount these in the Parts Express .75ft^3 finished cabinet, use two 150 watt plate amps, I believe they have one with 4th Order XO., and put them behind the Omegas, along the wall. The PE finished cabinets are really beautifully finished products, the photos do them no justice. I have the cherry veneer. They also have interchangeable baffles, making the cabinets re-useable for other projects/speakers. If I had a bigger place, my plan would be to use four Kodas in the .75ft^3, sprinkled along the back wall, to ameliorate room modes. These are like slightly smaller Shiva subs. Smaller cone means less mass, means faster transients. This driver will make 35Hz in a .5ft^3 sealed cabinet.

If you look at the Koda 8, you begin to see that it is unique. It is from the same people who give you the Shiva sub, which is pretty much a standard in excellent high value subs. You could whip up TWO of these things for about $400. How's that for ValueKing Audio??

To start with ONE sub, which may do it for you, I would also look at the very nice floor-loaded sub cabinet from www.creativesound.ca these guys up in Delta, BC have lots of cool stuff. Cut a hole, stuff it, mount the Koda and you are done. A wonderful little sub for not much dough.

That looks interesting D..Richard those could be the tickect. From what D describes it can also save you some money. Or maybe we can talk D into building some!

How about it D?

D... I remeber you mentioning building this subwoofer. You have already completed it? WOW

Hi Dan and GHM,

Nice overview of your sub experiences GHM...
sounds like you really like movies that use sound
in very dynamic ways...admittedly...I have been listening
to movies through my audio set up ever since Dan
suggested it with my purchase of the Pioneer 563A...

Although I don't necessarily watch movies that take
advantage of the soundscapes that many American
films do so well...I can say that the dimension that it
adds to the sheer pleasure and depth of the filmic
experience is quite fantastic...voices are much more
compelling for example...you can hear what the actor
is doing to pull you into the emotional life of his/her
character and you f-e-e-l things so much more deeply...

Deb and I are continually being fooled by things like
barking dogs...phones ringing...knocks on doors...
alarm clocks going off...and things like that...it startles
us into looking around or even getting up to check
if the sounds are originating from our house...funny!
and it also adds to the realism of the movies life.

Thanks Dan for your insights into what subwoofers
would be a great match for the Omega's on the cheap...
I am very, very tempted to jump into it. I will do a bit of
reading over the next few days and get my courage up...

I am putting together a Summer Study Program for
college students here in Ojai for this summer and have
been busy contacting college instructors who know students
who would be interested and so I just got back to reading
this thread...

Thanks again for sharing your experiences and insights with
me and everyone else who might be interested on the Omega thread.

Dan...your philosophy of doing a great deal on a lean budget
certainly fits my own ethos and pocket book perfectly...what an
amazing resource and wealth of information you are for all of us.

Warm regards -Richard-

Richard

If you get started on sub stuff, my Rx would be the following:

-Adire Koda 8
-Creative Sound black 1ft^3 sub enclosure
-Parts Express plate amp w/ 4th Order XO.
-1/2 Lb stuffing.

Wide range drivers get very special once you add a dedicated foundation to the sound.

Hi Dan,

Always nice to get an Rx from the good doctor
DMason...good for your health...good for your ears...
good for the bank account (what's left of it)...
good for the soul!

I just spoke to Louie...he feels his new hemp speakers
go substantially lower...perhaps making the whole issue
of subwoofers less critical...especially in my low ceiling
listening room...I am very excited about  Louie's new speakers...
but I guess we are looking at 2 months or longer...he does
not want to rush things...preferring to get things right...for
example he redesigned the driver a bit to get a smoother
response from it by rolling back the whizzer...

More frequency extension and more sensitivity should
translate into a breathtaking musical experience...

Great times ahead indeed...

Warm regards -Richard-

Hi all,

This thread is amazing and it's great to sit back, read and learn new ideas myself. Great info.

Many thanks,
Louis

PS all the Grande 8s are using FE207Es
