Dittos on Stewart Copeland. Amazingly musical, intricate, accurate and passionate. Without him the Police are DOA. Big fan also of Buddy Rich, Bonzo, Moon, Chad Smith and Carter B. of DMB.

My son, who is 9, learned to play the drums from two sources...  One, me.  Two, Guitar Hero --- Metallica, the video game on Wii.  I have a kit (nice), and he just got on it one day and played Sandman almost note-for-note!  I was astonished.  Those games can't teach you how to play guitar, but they do amazing things as far as drumming...  He is also an expert guitar hero player as well, but still struggles on the real guitar.  Oh well, he has some time before becoming a real rock star!

In no particular order

Shannon Lucas - The Black Dahlia Murder/All that Remains
Michael Portnoy - Dream Theater
Danney Carry - Tool
Jimmy Chamberlin - The Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan

I like alot of other drummers but those are hands down my favorites, check out chamberlin on Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie or he did an amazing job on Zeitgeist as well. And Shannon Lucas recorded the fall of ideals for all that remains and then nocturnal and deflorate with the Black Dahlia Murder.'

I am terrible with names, but two drummers that stand out for me are the drummer with Hendrix and drummer in Double Trouble. Love listening to Stevie Ray and his accompaniment.
Also saw Phil Collins during the "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" tour and could not believe what I was witnessing.

Well of course you know mcrespo71 or moi are not going to let this thread go on without mentioning Barriemore Barlow!

Isadore/Lordan who played with Robin Trower.

I am not saying that these drummers are the best, don't know if any one musician is best and, to me, that is a good thing!

I wanted to mention a couple of drummers I really enjoy and if you have not heard them, maybe you will enjoy them as well.

Phil Leavitt who plays with Dada.

Jerry Gaskill from King's X.

Sorry the name escapes me but I also like the guy from Simple Minds.

To me each of these guys just do something special.

I've recently been watching (repeatedly) Peter Gabriel's "Growing Up" concert. I love the drummer. His name is Jed Lynch. I'd never heard of him before, but he just drives the band. I like him a lot more than the guy who played on the last tour.

I have already seen numerous mentions of Buddy Rich and Neil Peart who are two of my all time favorites.

Having been to numerous Dead shows, I would like to mention Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart who are incredible live.

I always enjoyed Steve Smith. Check some of his videos on Drummer world. He is an incredible jazz drummer. Many dismiss him because of playing for Journey, but he can really play.
Speaking of Journey, don't forget Aynsley Dunbar.
I am glad to see Rod Morgenstein and Jeff Porcaro mentioned also.
Another personal favorite of mine is Scott Rockenfield of Queensryche. Vastly underrated.

Ginger Baker
Gene Krupa
Buddy Rich
Max Roach
Mickey Hart

All extremely talented, who pull sound from their drums, as opposed to just beating them.
