Hi,
Danny what are the pros and cons of field coil speakers?
Thanks in advance,
Don

The advantage is having adjustable electrical parameters on the fly. In practice though they are typically left in a specific setting once optimal for the application is found. So the adjustable feature is not that big of a deal. Other than that they have the same issues and considerations as any other driver. The con is that they cost is much higher.

On the con side, you need a quiet, stable DC power supply for each coil. So that adds complexity, weight, expense and reduced reliability. They were all the rage a very long time ago (many decades), before high flux, consistent permanent magnets were cheap and readily available. Can't understand why they are coming back really.
