Playlists for RMAF??
« on: 17 Sep 2009, 01:11 am »
it's almost showtime and like last year we'll have a computer based system in the room ( as well as a killer CD player from AMR!)  I'm looking for suggestions for a couple of playlists in different genres. somehow flipping through 10,000 songs just doesn't appeal and after the first day everything becomes a bit of a blurr shall we say. I have a feeling there are one or two people on AC who may have lists they could share????

thanks,
Lou

"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules"  Rob Gordon from "High Fidelity"  Man I always wanted to say that!  Here are few suggestions for a killer jazz compilation:

"Diverse" Roy Haynes from Birds of A Feather (Dreyfus) -- Roy Haynes' tribute to Charlie Parker

"Cut 'N Run" Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band from The Phat Pack (Immergent) -- take it up a notch!

"La Linea del Sur" Renaud Garcia-Fons from La Linea del Sur (Enja) -- new release from world's greatest double bassist

"Junior" Russ Reinberg from Blue Scarlett (Jazzed Media) -- Elegant clarinet from an underappreciated talent

"Take Four" The Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet from Hey, Look Me Over (Arbors Records) -- Joe Cohn covers his father's compostion

"Swing 48" Pearl Django from Swing 48 (Modern Hot Records)-- Classic Hot Jazz

"Relax" Buck Hill from Relax (Severn Records) -- Sonorous sax

"Vieques" Arturo O'Farrill from Live In Brooklyn (Zoho Records) -- Incredibly well recorded, the drummer is amazing

"Blue Monk" SuperBass from SuperBass (Telarc) -- Acoustic bass trio

"How Deep Is The Ocean?" Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton (Verve) -- The old master and the young lion make magic

"On The Sunny Side of The Street" Roberta Gambarini from Easy To Love (Groovin' High)

"Lonnie's Lament" Anat Cohen from Poetica (Anzic) -- Best cover of Coltrane's most haunting tune

"St. Thomas" Joshua Redman from Live At The Village Vanguard  (Warner Bros) -- Sax solo tour de force

Lou,

I was in your room and listened to a fabulous cut from Buddy Guy.  It was on the computer based system.

What was the name of the track?

Thanks.  Great Speakers by the way!  They sounded much better than I had heard them in prior years.

Travis, oh man I wish I knew?  at that point we were pulling things off the drive, not a playlist. it was probably Wayne that played that one, though I really like Guy's  "damn right I've got the blues" cd.
glad you liked the speakers, I'm hoping next year we can finally get the room working well enough to give a better idea of what they really sound like.

best,
lou

Travis,

I did play a Buddy Guy track a few times at RMAF.

It was "Feels Like Rain". The version I was playing was from a local radio station's compilation album, KBCO Studio C Vol. 15.

They have many artists come in to play live, on air. They record them and release a "best of" disc around Thanksgiving every year. I think they are recorded very well. The Buddy Guy track is one of my references.

You know, another great couple of tracks, that I suspect will show off a Daedalus, could be:
* Album: Drum Nation volume two. Track: Cissy Strut ... (Anton Fig, Oz Noy, Will lee) ... Also on the "Oz live" album..
 - Drums, Bass, Electric guitar... funk style. A very groovy tune! Great energy and bass!!! John Mayer also has a very good version of Cissy Strut!

* Album: Naissance.                    Track: Scratch - Solo ... (Antoine Dufour)
 - This is guitar playing with verve and drive, very melodic and full of acoustic cues.

Both albums are of course of awe inspiring recording quality.. I think.

Lastly.. should someone ask for say electronica or something... yikes.
Well...
* Album: Converting vegetarians.   Track: Jeenge ... (Infected Mushroom)
- Actually quite captivating sonic tapestry... One of their better songs... a bit "flat" of course..
