Can I replace my cable DVR?
« on: 10 Dec 2013, 09:09 pm »
Other than Tivo, which probably won't save me any money, can't really find any options out there for a DVR that look practical.

If it was just me, I would go with a HTPC, but my family is used to the convenience of a DVR.

Figured there would be some cablecard options, but I don't know what they are.

So, are they any reasonably priced cablecard DVR's?

Needs to have a simple UI, so it kind of acts like my Time Warner DVR.

FYI, the TW HD DVR costs about $23/month. Cablecard would be a few bucks a month.

If you can survive on OTA TV, the Channelmaster DVR+ is a great option.  $0.00/month!

Magnavox MDR 537H/f7 513H 515H  Same units with different sized HDDs.

Magnavox TB745H/F7 and Philips HDR5710/F7 and HDR5750/F7 HD Recorders/Wi-Fi Streamers

I have both the Philips 5750 and Magnavox515H  units connected to an antenna.  If you have questions, just ask.  There are some important differences.

None of the above units are CableCARD DVRs, only OTA antenna.

Being an antenna guy I know nothing about cable cards.  I do know all the units I listed will work with cable TV boxes.  If they won't work for the OP's needs, maybe they will work for others who read this thread. Here is the skinny:

Ceton and HDHomerun make set top boxes that utilize cablecards.  However, they do expect some type of network attached storage or storage area network in order to record.  This may not be exactly fit your request to get away from an HTPC, but it may give you an idea or new route to pursue.

I've been using a cable card with FiOS for about 5 years now with no issues, but that is going the HTPC route with an internal Ceton tuner...
