Oppo BDP-95! (Yes 95, not 93)
« on: 26 Nov 2010, 04:36 pm »
Thought I would post this here, too.  (I just posted in in the Home Theater circle.)

Has anyone else run across this?

Oppo BDP-95

Balanced stereo outputs!

I think I know what my next universal player will be...

It's not due for release until Late Feb or so.  It's nice that balanced (xlr) dedicated stereo outs are added to the 95 cuz the new 93 (it's non-SE sibling) has NO dedicated stereo outs at all, just multichannel.

Big time ditto.  That alone makes the 93 a non-starter for me.  I am curious what the 95's specs will be.  I hope it has single-ended stereo outputs too.

Does anyone know if the 93 and/or 95 will play back 5.1 24/96 FLAC files?

If you have a 93 or 95 player, download and try some files from 2L and let me know if it works.  Thanks.

Does FLAC support mean high-res 24-bit FLAC too?
Yes. 24-bit/192Khz (stereo) and 24-bit/96Khz (multi-channel).

If it had digital inputs, it would be perfect.

It's good to know it's in the specs.  This opens up some new possibilities for storing and playing 5.1 hi-rez files.

I know the 93's are just now trickling out and the 95's are not quite prime-time.   I'm hoping someone with a newly arrived 93 can try playing a 5.1 24/96 FLAC file to confirm that all the channels are getting decoded and are going to the right places.  An A-B between a DVD-A and ripped 24/96 FLAC file to verify the SQ of the files would be great.

If this works, I plan to rip 5.1 DVD-A, DD, and DTS music discs to either 24/96 or 16/48 FLAC and play them back from an eSATA drive connected to the BDP-95.  If I can figure out a reasonably efficient way of converting 5.1 SACDs to FLAC, I'll do that too.  I'll stick with my SB3 for the rest of my 16 bit stereo files.

Thanks all.

Because the BDP-95 is intended for audiophiles, I can't help but believe that digital inputs would easily double sales of this model, even if it were $100 more.

I think even with this machine there are a lot of people who will be using a separate DAC so I am not sure how much more attractive this would be.

I don't normally use a separate DAC on the 83SE, and wouldn't normally on the 95.  I've found due to the universal nature of the player it's complicated to use an external DAC when switching between SACD, DVD-A, etc.  Although I do have an Altona to take HDMI 24/88.2 off the SACD PCM for 2 channel only and feed it to my DAC???  So, yes you're probably correct.

I've had the BDP-93 for a few days now: I run stereo analogue out to my pre-amp, and it sounds very good. The 93 will decode all high-resolution sources (Blu-Ray, DVD-A, whatever), downmix to stereo, and output full range through the front left and front right RCA outputs in the multichannel output section. So, although it looks like it only has multichannel analogue outputs, that is not the case in practice.

Major Oppo BDP-93 thread is here (149 pages as of this moment). http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1291855&page=43

FLAC decoding and streaming media are working but not in every permutation, apparently. FLAC support is definitely getting upgraded in the next firmware. Oppo develops firmware steadily through a product's life and usually ends up maxing out hardware capabilities.
