5V4G replacement for 54R4???
« on: 17 Apr 2008, 03:12 pm »
Hello, regarding the NORH SE9 I just came across a vintage 5V4G rectifier tube in pretty good shape and I am wondering if I can replace it for the 5AR4 sovtek stock tube. I understand that both tubes do no have the same specs, so I do not want to srew things up until I know is safe to swap the tubes. Any help out there? Thanks in advace. Leon.

Ok. So I got an e-mail from Youths and she says yes! go for it! Then I got another e-mail from Mr. Barnes and he says No! ask the tube manufacturer. So I still right where I started! Any others have some advice??

I'd say no, unless you are absolutely sure the 5AR4 is being babied in it's application.  5V4G has about 150% the voltage drop of 5AR4 at similar currents, so anode dissipation may be too much for it.  Voltage ratings for the 5AR4 are a tad higher, but that isn't likely the main concern in most applications...
