I'm looking through some of the previous posts in this circle and I see various RIP, this person and what is the best jazz from a bygone era posts. I do love those posts. But I also know that there are plenty of worthwhile jazz musicians who are living today that I would love to see in person.
So, who is that living jazz musician that I should seek out? Maybe just to listen to an album or find them in concert, let me know.
(one recommendation per post)
Thanks!

Christian McBride would be my first recommendation. One of my favorite musicians alive today

If you like bass, which I do, in addition to Christian McBride, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Brian Bromberg, and up and coming Dan Chmielinski--he was voted top jazz bass player in the entire midwest WHEN HE WAS 16, and all the rest were at least 25 that were voted in their respective instruments. He is now about 24. Joe Sample, once of the Crusaders, is a really good jazz piano player. If you like fusion jazz, Michael Franks, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, the group Fourplay, and Bob James. Singer wise, Dianne Reeves--multiple Grammy winner, along with Manhattan Transfer, and Natalie Cole. More would be Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

The Manhattan Jazz Quintet
Lew Soloff, George Young, David Matthews, Eddie Gomez, and Steve Gadd. You probably already know Gomez and Gadd.
All are on the gradient from good to great musicians, and the sum exceeds the parts. Look for the "My Funny Valentine" as excellent music in a demo quality recording.

I'm not surprised. Although New York is in the name, they were initially put together by jazz aficianodoes in Japan, and their earlier (and best) recordings were made in Japan. Even the CD's can be a bit pricey. I bought my vinyl copies out of Japan and bit the bullet to get them here.

Joshua Redman
-
Charles Lloyd---incredible reed man whom everyone has played with including Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Larry Grenadier, Michel Pettruciani, Billy Hart, Jason Moran, Eric Harland, Bill Frisell, Keith Jarrett to name a few.
-
Vocals: Cécile McLorin Salvant
Piano: Chick Corea
:thumb:
-
Unfortunatelly Michel Pettruciani passed away in 1999 at only 36yo.
Seems Keith Jarrett is no more humming what is a great improvement but

Hey Gonefishin, been a while!
If I were to point you to one musician, it would be Pat Metheny. If I were to pick a single album from his catalog it would probably be Beyond the Missouri Sky where he paired up with Charlie Hayden.
https://www.patmetheny.com/music/
His catalog starts back in the 70's which is when I first listened to him. If memory serves, he's got over 40 Grammy's. Between his Group, solo and collaborative efforts, I think he's got north of 60 releases that cover ALL styles of jazz.
He's certainly one of my fav's :thumb:
-
+1 on Pat Metheny. I’ve seen him several times live. Always puts on a top notch performance.
-
I enjoyed very much First Circle but I dont understand some Metheny solo albums:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0JPGo9woRo
-
Brad Mehldau is the first that came to my mind when reading the thread title.
-
I think the question should be, "can you recommend one living jazz musician I SHOULDN'T know about.
That would be a much shorter list.
-
Christian McBride would be my first recommendation. One of my favorite musicians alive today

Bird Lives! Now and forever. His 100th birthday on Saturday, WKCR (https://www.cc-seas.columbia.edu/wkcr/story/charlie-parker-centennial-festival) streaming all known recordings.
Among the living, I have great respect for Bill Evans (sax.) I heard him play as featured sideman with a really great jazz trio in 1983 when he was 25yo. After his solo on The Way You Look Tonight, the great drummer Alan Dawson stopped playing, put down his sticks stood up and clapped while the rest of the band kept playing the tune. That was very out of character for Alan, but he knew it was a great moment in jazz and he recognized it. I have not heard anything since then to surpass Bill's performance playing straight ahead bop. But he plays rock on his own records and gigs so it's moot. In my mind he is the greatest living jazz musician, even though he doesn't play jazz anymore.
-
I cant praise enough Sax Gordon
a most favorite show man.
-
Brian Blade, drummer extraordinaire.
-
What a great list, keep'em coming!
Some of the people mentioned I feel lucky enough to have seen them play. Some of these others I'll certainly put on my list to listen to, and keep an eye open when they're coming in my area. It was some while ago when I was listening to some music thinking about all the great musicians I didn't get to see while they were alive. Then it struck me that I need to make it a point to see some of the many greats that are still alive.
thanks so much for the suggestions!
-
Wynton Marsalis.
-
+1 for Brian Blade! He has also played for a long time with Wayne Shorter, who turned 87 yesterday, and is very much alive.
Danilo Perez on Piano and John Patitucci on bass are also part of that combo. Insane musicianship! Check out the albums "Without a net" and "Alegria".
Other contemporary favourites of mine (That I didn't find posted) include Robert Glasper (piano), Chris Potter (sax), Gretchen Parlato (vocals) and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (trumpet). This is really just scratching the surface of the incredible contemporaray jazz scene.
Also! In this thread Brad Meldhau, Cristian Mcbride and Joshua Redman were metioned. Add Brian Blade and you'll have the first edition of the Joshua Redman quartet from 94´, who came toghether and recorded an album for the first time since then this year, titled "Roundagain". Check it out!
Now I'm gonna stop myself. Must. Hold. back... ....jaaaazzzzz....
-
Carla Bley doesn't get nearly enough credit for her inventive composition IMO, she's incredible.
-
Guitarist Jeff Parker
I've been really enjoying his is latest album, "Suite for Max Brown". Makaya McCraven, who was already mentioned in this thread, plays drums on a few of the tracks.

Bass player Marcus Miller--started out playing with Miles Davis in the 60's.
-
Trumpeter Ron Miles is another great one to check out.

I wish this forum had the ability to "like" a post, like a lot of other forums. There are so many of these posts that I want to acknowledge what great suggestions but I don't necessarily want to clog up the thread with a quote and saying that I agree.
Awesome, awesome suggestions.

By the way hi my name is Lionell and I am new to this form and I’m really liking some of the discussions I see going on here at audiocircle!
-
Christopher Hollyday, alto sax, the "young lion" bebop star from the 1990s.
He left the recording industry for 20 years while he taught and performed in So. Cal, but he has two new albums out in the past two years with a great young band, playing better than ever.

Along with Nubya, another London based artist; Ruby Rushton.
This whole album is pretty solid:

Not a fair question, but one should be Sonny Rollins, a giant - or should I say, the "Colossus".

The question OP is a bit open ended. There are so many different styles, genres, and subgenres of jazz, all can be, and are far, different.
So, I will post several recommendations of various genres.
First off, M-BASE is a style, that despite being in some pretty odd time signatures, still has tons of groove. Started by sax player, Steve Coleman (winner of the McGarther genius grant a couple of years ago), but there are many others in the genre.
Here a sample. Drum solo for the first 2 minutes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhRO_ROkjl4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhRO_ROkjl4)
-
Acoustic bass player, Michael Formanek.
One might call this post bop, but that's a bit broad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oWHu8_vHF4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oWHu8_vHF4)
-
Some pretty complex (harmonically and time signature), fusion by Austrian guitarist, Alex Machacek.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBarB-I8NpY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBarB-I8NpY)

British scene artist like Moses Boyd were already mentioned earlier, so a big +1 to those, but also have to add in GoGo Penguin. Super good simple 3 piece. Other ones to add would be The Bad Plus, BADBADNOTGOOD, Mammal Hands, and Fred Hersch and another +1 to Brad Mehldau Trio. Their cover of Alice In Chains "Got Me Wrong" is so good.
-
Lots come to mind- Fred Hersh Trio, Herbie Hancock, Benny Green, Jacky Terrasson, Ahmad Jamal- These are all piano players. And, yes Ahmad Jamal is still alive and still playing. If you want to be amazed by a 87 year old piano player, just search YouTube for his videos.
Can’t forget Bob James or Lee Ritenour. They were both part of a group called Fourplay which is worth checking out.
Vocals- Jane Monheit, Melody Gardot, Cassandra Wilson and Canadian vocalist Holly Cole who recently recorded a very good sounding album.
If you are looking for something demanding in terms of dynamics- Return of the Headhunters with Herbie Hancock.
-
Thanks for all the awesome recommendations!
The main motivator for my post is to compile a list of living musicians that I would love to see in concert (should covid restrictions lighten up in the future). Asking for recommendations is simply because there are so many skilled musicians (both well known to many and regionally known) that I don't know well enough.
I've had too many musicians that I could have seen during my lifetime and frankly should have, but I passed up the opportunity.
Thanks,
Dan

I couldn't agree more and since the Op asked for performers 'while still alive' I'll add another fav of mine ….

Since you're goal is to see some incredible musicians live while you can, the best answer of who to see is "whoever is playing near you." If you have a jazz club nearby, stop in sometime and ask the staff there who's coming that they consider a "do not miss." They will rarely steer you wrong.
If you want my advice, one living jazz musician I think everyone should see at least once is Chihiro Yamanaka. Here in the US she is virtually unknown, but in Europe and Japan she's a star. Probably the most brilliant pianist I know. And if you happen to catch her with her New York trio (with Yoshi Waki on bass and John Davis on drums), you are in for a real treat with some of the finest musicians on the planet. These are the guys she records with, and for good reason. Yoshi plays all over New York, and John pops up here and there when he's not touring with Cassandra Wilson or Leslie Odom Jr. (of Hamilton fame).

Thanks for this list of very contemporary "alive" jazz musician that people should know about (I agree with most, and will look into the ones I don't know). Here's my list of some that are "alive" and have been around a long time, and more up-and-coming musicians.
Bassists: Dave Holland, Buster Williams, Linda May Han Oh, Larry Grenadier, Ben Allison
Pianists: Vijay Iyer, Ethan Iverson, Jason Moran, Robert Glasper, Helge Lien
Drummers: Jack Dejohnette, Mark Guiliana, Terreon Gully, Jeff Ballard
Vibraphone: Gary Burton, Stefon Harris
Sax: Archie Shepp, Charles Lloyd, Kamasi Washington, Immanuel Wilkins
So many, and such great music.
