Buffalo III Dual Mono DAC

Thumbnail for My diy Twisted Pear Buffalo III Dual Mono DAC. HiFi2000 Pesante chassis, machining by modushop. Remote control, I2C Arduino control of DAC.
Thumbnail for Modushop in Italy will machine both sides of 10mm panel and anodize after machining. I had a cavity machined to place LCD closer to face of front panel.
Thumbnail for Back of front panel. LCD display, Arduino controller, shield, rotary encoder, IR receiver attach with screws. An Apple remote control is used to control it.
Thumbnail for One thing Twisted Pear does is use four regulators for different portions of the DAC. Shunting power supplies are used to power each DAC board and right and left channels of output board. Lots of heat but such good sound! Two small power supplies power the Arduino/LCD screen and USB/input switching boards.

Thumbnail for I used a Twisted Pear Legato I/V board for output. I get discrete balanced out, RCA out and headphone out. Inputs, S/PDIF, USB to I2S and a Twisted Pear Teleporter transmits and receives I2S (CD) and DSD (SACD) from a modded Denon 3910.
Thumbnail for That USB port at right front is for external programming of the Arduino controller. No need to pop the top to program.

Thumbnail for The Legato I/V output board has common mode DC between ground and pos, ground and neg of balanced so coupling caps are used to prevent DC going to amp. No DC between pos and neg of balanced out.
Thumbnail for I modded my SB Touch for I2S out. I2S has clock separate of data where S/PDIF has clock embedded with data. The ESS Sabre DAC chips do a good job with S/PDIF but I2S sounds just a bit better.
Thumbnail for A Twisted Pear Teleporter is used to send I2S (CD) or DSD (SACD) to DAC via Cat network cable. The switch is used to select I2S or DSD output.
