Thanks for the post (saved the site).  I'll have to give it a look.  Over the winter, I have some last ripping stuff planned (some DVD-As mainly) and at least some conversions (a few DFF to DSF files and depending on what I do with LMS in a secondary system with a Teac DAC on a Squeezebox Touch perhaps some DSF to PCM, unless I do beta version 7.9 or do EDO which I have not got to work yet).  I probably can use some DSF to PCM for an Oppo BDP-93 which is in the master bedroom and feeds the outdoor speakers too.  I did some via dbPoweramp's converter but the output on the Squeezebox Touch is low (via the coax out to the Teac DAC) and it also does them at 24/96 vs. 24/88.2.

Phil,

I have some questions:
1) What is version 7.9 (it's AuI v. 3.7.9)?
2) What is LMS?

Thank you,
Yuri

Yuri, Hello & welcome to the AudioCircle !

I've been Oversampling my CDs for some time as I find that this really suits the highly dense dynamic contrast Orchestral (& other
acoustic based) music sound quite a bit different than it does at 16bit/44.1 Khz . I realize that there is'nt any "new" information being added, but that the sound improvement may be due to "a reduction of various forms of filter-induced phase distortions". I am actually
not knowledgeable enough to come to this conclusion on my own, but it makes extreme sense to me from what I'm hearing. No one
can actually hear even 44.1 khz so the lack of musical clarity has to be due to something other then just frequency retrieval.

I'm sorry to bore you with information that I'm sure you're already aware of, as the real reason I've written is that I'm having
some difficulties with your test conversion program. I'm not quite sure how to select the output path for the converted files as I need to
place them on an external drive . I have been using JRMC for my conversions only as I use a seperate Digital File Player for playing my
files

Thank you & once again welcome to AudioCircle,
Steve

Audiventory:  Would you please share some technical details of the digital filters incorporated with your oversampling algorthms?  For example, when oversampling 44.1 files, is the digital filter applied a symmetrical linear phase type, or some variation on a minimum phase type with less/no pre-rining?  Is the filter used a straight forward steep brickwall type with no alias products or do incorporate a less steep filter allowing some aliasing but reducing ringing?
When converting PCM-DSD, same questions as above, and, what is the process: for example, do you oversample 44.1 to 176.4 or 352.8, and then go to DSD (or DSDx2 is that an option), and if you go to 176.4 or 352.8 first, what type of filters are applied (as above).
Thanks for any details you care to share.

The above would be of interest to me as well if I need to go that route

Once I've finished my lunch,  I hope to go home & "play around" with the test converter program

If I have any success I will post my impressions of how this appears to compare with the algorithms that JRMC
uses.  (My JRMC converted files have spoiled me to the point that I have no interest in playing CDs anymore,
unless I'm having a network problem & am unable to start my Auraliti PK100 which uses MPaD to control it.)

24bit/ 176.4 khz really appears to be the "sweet spot" of my DAC ,so that's what I try to "feed it".

I'm sorry to say that I was unable to figure out the correct procedural steps to operate the program.

Luckily, I've been pretty satisfied with my results with using JRMC so I'll continue to use it for my file converts.

(I was thinking how uncanny "reducing various phase-induced distortions to gain more clarity" could be a description of my life; Yeah, we'd all be on the path to "Uptopia" if we were able to "see" those distortions early enough. Well, I can at least make my music more enjoyable)

Have a Great Day

I'm sorry to say that I was unable to figure out the correct procedural steps to operate the program.

"Open files" (select the file you want to convert)
Select "Output" (Format, Bit depth, Sampling rate)
Press "Start"

Worked on the first try converting a 16/44 to DSD64 DSF. You'll find the converted file in the ConvertResult subfolder of the folder containing the original file you converted.

Plays and displays in my JRMC20 and my TEAC DAC as a DSD64 file.

Hi Steve,

> I've been Oversampling my CDs for some time as I find that this really suits the highly dense dynamic contrast Orchestral (& other
acoustic based) music sound quite a bit different than it does at 16bit/44.1 Khz.

Analog filter does restoring signal from 16/44. This process very like to oversampling. Thus we oversample signal we do work of analog filter.
Demands for filter on oversampled sampling rate is less hard in this case.

> I realize that there isn't any "new" information being added, but that the sound improvement may be due to "a reduction of various forms of filter-induced phase distortions".
AuI don’t add info. It simply carefully restore it from 16/44. AuI ConverteR 48x44's conversion algorithm alphaC helps to analog filter.

> I'm not quite sure how to select the output path for the converted files as I need to
place them on an external drive.

You can select 2 types of paths:
1. Relative
    Example:
        Input path: c:\music
Path into field «Directory output files» of main AuI’s window: Album
        Thus output fule: c:\music\Album
2. Absolute
    Example:
        Input path: c:\music
Path into field «Directory output files» of main AuI’s window: c:\Album
        Thus output fule: c:\Album

You can recreate full directory's structure of input files into path from «Directory output files». Need turn ON middle directory's button.
If you want recreate only directory containing files, need turn ON most right directory button too.

As output directory you select your external drive's folder as usual folder. In select path window you can create folder. Or input it manually into «Directory output files» (will created automatically).

Best regards,
Yuri

Hi barrows,

> when oversampling 44.1 files, is the digital filter applied a symmetrical linear phase type, or some variation on a minimum phase type with less/no pre-rining?

You can select preferable filter into Settings window: turn ON/OFF "Use minimum phase filter…» (available into FREE, Audiophil-E, PROduce-R, PROduce-RD)

>Is the filter used a straight forward steep brickwall type with no alias products or do incorporate a less steep filter allowing some aliasing but reducing ringing?

General rule: provide maximal suppressing of aliases with minimal loss of useful band.
It manually optimized filter for each pair input/output sampling rates

For linear phase filter:
1. maximal suppression of aliases - minimum ringing.

For minimal phase filter:
1. maximal suppression of aliases - minimum ringing
2. maximal linearity of phase response - minimal pre-ringing and post-ringing.

44/48/88/…/352/384 kHz oversampled to 2.8/5.6 MHz and applied delta sigma modulation.
Filters same. You can use as linear phase filter as minimal phase filter.

Yuri

Here described how connect dff2dsf utility (as input decoder) to AuI ConverteR 48x44 under Mac OS X and Windows.
Now AuI ConverteR read intermediate DSF (converted by dff2dsf from input DFF) without conversion to PCM.

Need download last AuI's update 3.8.8 or later.

Hello Yuri,
I have been on your website and checked out the YouTube  video. Looks like great software!  Right now, I  have 2 dacs that are only 16/44 capable and I don't know if I'll be buying new dacs that are capable of more. I have some 16/44 cd's that have lots of noise and will also be doing a/d conversion of my many albums including 78's. Can I simply use your software for reducing noise only in the 16/44 domain without doing any up sampling?
Also, regarding tagging, what databases do you use? I have lots of obscure cd's that are difficult to tag.
Thanks,
Nick

Hello Nick,

Thank you for kind word!

>Right now, I  have 2 dacs that are only 16/44 capable and I don't know if I'll be buying new dacs that are capable of more. I have some 16/44 cd's that have lots of noise and will also be doing a/d conversion of my many albums including 78's.

Sample rate as itself don't provide sound quality.

As example, pro 44/16 DAC with better components and better tuned can sound better more cheap 192/24 DAC.

Exists several measured criterias that can used as hi-end features of hardware.
But without measurement tools impossibly check it home.

And I always recommend check sound on hear before buying.
Also measurement don't cancel hearing control.

>Can I simply use your software for reducing noise only in the 16/44 domain without doing any up sampling?

I suppose the noise distributed in range 0 … 22 kHz.
AuI in optimized mode do deep filtration with transient band 20 … 22 kHz.
However I don’t sure that it reduse noise in your case.

Anyway you can try use free demo. There quality is not limited.
I special do it for possibility full sound check of my software before buying.

> Also, regarding tagging, what databases do you use? I have lots of obscure cd's that are difficult to tag.

As CD database as default used freedb.org. Possibly musicbrainz.org will work too.
Able set database at CD ripper settings:
Settings window / CD ripper/ISO tab / CDDB reading parameters

I consider possibility add gracenote  support.
But while don’t know how provide for AuI's users suitable work due don’t know, how fit gracenote’s payment model.

Best regards,
Yuri

Smooth DC functionality intended for supressing clicks and begin and end of track.

Smooth DC is loudness management: fade in/out at begin/end of track.

Post by: audiventory on 6 May 2016, 09:48 am
Hi John,

Thank you for reply. I will try to make my site's pages clearer.

AuI ConverteR support conversion multichannel ISO/DFF/DSF to FLAC (number input channels = number output channels) in editons:

1. DEMO,

2. Audiophil-E, PROduce-R, PROduce-RD

3. Modula-R (see Easy Configurator http://samplerateconverter.com/mscn/modula-r-configurator.php )

There need modules:

a) ISO, DSF, DFF (D64/128) > FLAC : [ISO extract (core)] + [input D64/128 (add-on)] + [Base (core)]

b) DSF, DFF (D64/128) > FLAC : [input D64/128 (add-on)] + [Base (core)]

For support D256/512 also need module [input D256/512 (add-on)].

Hi Yuri, I had a question.  I'm just starting to explore the upconversion possibilities for my audio system.  I have an iFi iDSD which is DSD256 and DSD512 capable.  I've been using the HQPlayer upsampler to change my 24/96 and 24/192 files to DSD256, and I like the way it sounds.  The problem is that I'd really like to hear things upsampled to DSD512 but my Windows 10 PC server doesn't have enough CPU to do that in real time, which is how HQPlayer works.

Is it possible to do this type of conversion with your program?  And are there any differences in sound quality between your program and HQPlayer?

Hi Tyson,

Is it possible to do this type of conversion with your program?

AuI ConverteR support output DSF D64/128/256/512/1024.

It possibly check in demo at our site http://samplerateconverter.com/

This option supported in PROduce-RD (maximal edition) and some configurations of Modula-R edition.

And are there any differences in sound quality between your program and HQPlayer?

I don’t research HQPlayer. Jussi (HQPlayer’s developer) stated some figures and I may trust him. It is good level.

Of course, any qualitative algorithm consume great computing resources.

Our software intended for studio work.
It is mean that there distortions and noise should be reffered to level of pro analogues.

Still I don't stumbled independent comparison of PCM to DSD converters.
But here comparison of DSD to PCM converters (see Noise level in table in 4th picture) http://archimago.blogspot.ru/2015/04/analysis-dsd-to-pcm-2015-foobar-sacd.html

I can't do it, because I'm developer of one of rippers.

But it is not independent opinion :)

I hope, that some independent person will make independent comparison of the rippers by error steadyness.

Why not?  I don't see any reason why you wouldn't rank yours #1 but I'm curious to know what you think of the others.  In fact, how do you rank dBpoweramp since it does things that yours and the others can't such as rip using a robot.

I do internal researches, but I can't show results by ethical reasons.

Automation is very important thing for big number of ripped CD's. As far as I know, there are some special device, isn't it?

Also one ripper (I don't remember it's name) use several drives for faster ripping.

I also have ideas about same functionality, but without special hardware - only standard drives.

Estimation of the ripping software is complex thing (complex of features for certain task).

I think without giving an opinion and backing it up without data isn't any better though.  You're entitled to give an opinion so long as you're not bashing the competing product.  I'm not looking for that either.

If says about quality for base of opinion need results of test (that is not public available currently).

Often I read in a forums, that "ripper N is the better than M". But it is feellings only.

Real figures may show that M is better than N.

Other people says, that a ripper is the best, because it use checksum database.

But after writing it in the formulas we can see that there is not all so simple as look at first sight.

I think, that it is need to make efforts to increase correct error detection probability without refering to external non-certified database.

When we read audio data as raw stream with error flags, we can to try restore damaged data even.

Such algorithms is "Paranoia (https://www.xiph.org/paranoia/faq.html#cdparanoia)" (open source) and Audiophile Inventory's "Ripping with deep error control" (http://samplerateconverter.com/content/safe-audio-cd-ripping-technology).

As far as I know dBpoweramp use same algorithm, like described in my article.

These algorithms have common base, but different implementations.
So need practically check their abilities in figures to correct conclusions.

Also there are different kinds of disc damages, that can change test results, I suppose.

In the article I wanted to say, that we can't rely to feelings in CD ripper estimation.

We can't say that ripper #1 have more transparent sound than ripper #2.
Errors of CD ripping are coarse enough.

In my ripper I like interface: open tracks as usual files (cda or aiff), no settings for user, one window for use action.

Though, while I don't apply automation for big number of ripped CDs, that done by some competitors.

iTunes have access to the best metadata database Gracenote (paid for commercial software).

XLD is free for Mac only (I don't know about its error detection algorithm).

CDRtools (cdda2wav+"paranoia") is free for Windows only.

It is impossibly univocal rank geterogenous advantages, I suppose.
It is need to consider the ripping tool for your task.

As example, some people look for fast ripper.
But audiophile ripping is not fast, because there are re-reading and error detections with speed adaptation are used.
Etc.

Hi from Spain,

Weeks ago I tried your soft (trial) to make FLAC 24/192 -> FLAC 24/96 and the new sound is very good, congratulations. With very good recordings and high DR off course.

In my system, very optimized to play multimedia, I can easy detect the differences between MP3 320 kbps, Ogg q9 or q10, FLAC 16/* and FLAC 24/*.

I have a question:

And between FLAC 0 and FLAC 4 or 8 too <- What do you think it is due to?

I have a lot of questions. Maybe a new thread.
Title: Re: HD audio converter file format and resolution (software)
Post by: audiventory on 19 May 2018, 05:31 pm
Hi from Russia,

Thank you for kind words, Maty.

FLAC contains absolutelly identical binary content for any compresion level (including uncompressed FLAC).

There is hypthesis, that FLAC upacking can cause additinal consuming of computer resources and additional noise in the audio system.

It may be observed via spectrum analyzis of analog output of DAC. But still nobody show it.

So while no safe evidences, that compressed FLAC cause some quality issues.

And you can use optimal for you comression level.

Best regards,
Yuri

Post by: maty on 19 May 2018, 05:39 pm
Yes, I have the same hypothesis, the CPU load. More load -> more noise.

More incredible, if I make a special degrag of the audio files the sound is better, without a doubt. The CPU load must be the same if not equal. Your hypothesis?

Now: i5 4460.
Title: Re: HD audio converter file format and resolution (software)
Post by: audiventory on 19 May 2018, 05:43 pm
It is not my hypothesis. I read it in one of FLAC discussions.

Unfortunatelly, I have no proper hardware spectrum analyzer to execute experiment.

Also it may depend on system, if the hypothesis will proved even.

Post by: maty on 19 May 2018, 06:00 pm
Why almost all music from digital masters between 80's and late nineties sound bad or not as well as they should?

Most of the music that gets me excited comes from analog masters before the eighties.

My hypothesis is that the old ADC/DAC and clocks added a lot of jitter to the master. What do you think?
Title: Re: HD audio converter file format and resolution (software)
Post by: audiventory on 19 May 2018, 06:18 pm
It is need to learn each system [from ADC to DAC] for jitter.

I suppose, modern CDs are recorded, mixed in high resolution on powerful computers. It give higher sound quality, than elder CDs.

High resolution give more opportunities to reduce measurable distortions in audible range. These things may be observed objectively.

There is huge distange between digital music production devices in 80's (and 90's even) and current ones.

I played in bands since 80's. If look from 80's/90's, current equipment/software like to miracle :)
Title: Re: HD audio converter file format and resolution (software)
Post by: maty on 20 May 2018, 09:46 am
After many tests, usually with this recoder said recordings improve or do not sound to bad. When 24/96 -> 24/96 or 24/192 -> 24/96. FLAC 0 1024 kpbs.

[IMG] http://maty.galeon.com/WP-imagenes/foobar2000/foobar2000-convert-profiles-sssrc-96-intermediate-93_9.png

Until a month ago, before my last optimizacion, the pass band at 95%

The master clocks of these years had a lot of jitter -> jitter in the digital master -> jitter in cassette, CD, vinyl...

Off course, the new softs are much better.

And, with your soft the sound is better than SoX or SSRC with these bad recordings or older/modern too!
