Dave Macpherson and I concluded after the last show we did in Axpona, that it performed at or beyond the level of the modified 205!

At the same show, it showed itself VERY WELL in the $130K room with Sota and Destination Audio Polish horns with our One and Only pair of 845 DS SET Mono Blocks!

Wow, the Pioneer LX-500 mod must be quite a unit!

As a Modwright 205 owner, I am surprised that you were able to match and/or better the performance of the 205, especially with it's separate tube rectified power supply as you indicated at the time that was the best mod you had done.

It is a different DAC (AKM vs SABRE) and the tube circuit is different. In the case of the Pioneer, we are able to install two transformers inside the unit and power the digital circuitry and analog circuits with our own power supplies.

The Pioneer lacks the digital input flexibility of the Oppo 205. It has a USB input for external USB storage device, but no spdif, coax or USB streaming input. It is also < $1K for the player and $1500 for the mod instead of $2500.

I knew that it was close, albeit a bit different. At Axpona, we had SUCH good digital playback that I was really happy! One of my room partners told me after the show that he preferred the sound we got from the LX-500 to what we usually got from the Oppo.

It is simply very good!
