Terry Kath was amazing. His premature death derailed Chicago.

For a while, Chicago was the opening act for Hendrix. Hendrix was wanting to join Chicago, but then he overdosed before it happened.

That would have been interesting.

I think we've done this before.
Regardless, I've heard most of the above and the one person that truly impresses me by far is Chet Atkins. Most of the time, he sounds just okay then you will hear him cleanly and clearly reel off several notes in one second. Listen to Tiger Rag at 3:30

There's Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix and then everyone else.

Not the best but my favorite of everyone else:Mick TaylorLowell GeorgeDuane AllmanJimmy PageJerry GarciaEric Clapton

Yes!  SRV the cleanest, JH the most creative.  And let's not forget Hughie Thomasson (Outlaws/Skynyrd), a little of both.

That said, this is a little like a beauty contest...it's in the eyes (ears) of the beholder.

OMG, nobody has yet mentioned Walter Becker?  Some of his riffs are reportedly unable to be reproduced.

Seconds for Michael Hedges, Leo Kotkie, and Mick Taylor.

I'd like to add Jorma Kaukonen (electric and acoustic) and Philip Catherine to the mix.

Currently,  Joe Bonamassa.  Have seen him live, just incredible. In addition to the aforementioned,  here's my incomplete list.

There's so many to choose from:
1. Rory Gallagher
2. Gary Moore
3. Steve Morse
4. Alvin Lee
5. Jimmy Page
6. Jeff Beck
7. Eric Clapton

And the list goes on and on.  Don't forget early legends such as Charlie Christian,  Les Paul,  and so on.

great list I concur, as another poster did I also will add Mark Knofler

John Mayer is no slouch. Maybe not as flashy in style, but his melodies are understated.

A rock history expert say when Jimi was in London there was negotiations to Jimi join ELP, it was said Carl loved the idea but it was rejected by Greg unfortunately, the Emerson position was untold.

Rolling Stone list of top 100. Jimi Hendrix is number 1, no mention of Terry Kaft and others that people posted here.

Actually,  there are quite a few artists listed who made the list mentioned.

I don't think Brian May would rank himself above Rory Gallagher.  :green:

Trying to pick the best is like trying to rank which Scotch is the best.  Depends on one's pallet.

Having said all that, my personal favorite who is currently with us is Joe Bonamassa.   All time, it's just too hard.  So many good choices.  :thumb:

Too bad this Rolling Stone list dont consider classical guitarists, no even John McLaughlin or Ricky Skaggs a Christian virtuose guitarist, this list seems dedicated to Hardcore bands.

Willie Nelson? someone listed Willie Nelson!

Good point.  There was thread similar to this but about drummers.  Quite apparent if the band (or performer) was not main stream it did not count.
