Smokin Grateful Dead YouTube shows
« on: 10 Apr 2020, 09:43 pm »
So I’m looking for you GD experts to link some incredible shows. I am only mostly looking for great sound quality , great video , great shows on YouTube .
Share your story if you like . Always nice to hear fun stories.
I saw my first show in 84’. And it was instant EVERYTHING!!
A year later I was on an 8 show mini east coast tour, selling falafel for the faithful at Alpine Valley for three nights . We once drove from Pittsburgh to Eugene Oregon then California to see a few shows .
I saw about 50 Dead shows and more than 15 Jerry Band shows, and caught Jerry and Grisman on Broadway.
Lived in the Bay Area for 3 years from 91’-93’ and saw a whole bunch of west coast shows .
Anyway , after a 20 year hiatus from listening to them , I am dabbling in listening again .
I have never seen a live show ,GD wise , after Jerry passed away. Not that I wouldn’t.
Peace ,
Todd
This is a Philadelphia show that sounds awesome to me . Can’t go wrong opening with Aiko . I broke down in tears for some reason while indoor biking listening to the third song . Emotional times now I guess .

I was at that show in Philly. Last time I saw them and the last stadium concert I went to.  Not a good show imho.

I was fortunate to have seen shows during what I think was their prime in the 1970s in smaller venues. Other than the movies the band produced during that period I doubt there's any video.  I still enjoy the Dick's Picks from that era. Glad they got it on tape, and the tapes were saved from the landfill.  :D

Well, I didn't realize these shows were video taped. Here's a great example from that era. The audio tapes from these shows sound quite good and the band was tight. I hope the video does them justice :thumb:.

I started seeing them in the mid 1960's. I grew up in Eugene and they often came here and stayed at Kesey's farm. My favorite time period was before all the radio hits and mega stadium shows. Their long instrumental trips are my favorites. Ken Babbs and a few other original members of the pranksters still like here. I have not seen Mountain Girl for a long time. Don't know if she and her daughter are still in the area. She was Jerry's second wife.

Video is a little tough unless you want to see a lot of their later stuff.  First place I'd go is the Grateful Dead Movie.  Really good performance musically.  After that Closing of Winterland, Truckin up to Buffalo, there's a B&W copy of a show from 76 from the Cap on YouTube that's excellent musically.  I think they taped the shows from Radio City and the Warfield in 1980 and edited them into a finished show as well.  Some good acoustic footage in there.

and to get a taste of the magic start with the not fade. Maybe the best Jerry Brent interaction on the internet.

Todd, i suspect we we at all the same shows from 91-93. I moved from NY to SF in 1990. I saw most every Jerry appearence on the west coast till he died. I love the later year stuff.  I have tears running down my face watching the take you home> watchtower>AM dew> NFA

if you like Jerry dancing. The above  is the one to see.

if you want intense Brent, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHU5FywUBEk  also brings tears

Yesterday was the premier of a weekly Friday night(5 PST) broadcast on the Grateful Dead's YouTube channel. Every Saturday night(5 PST) Dead and Co. have been broadcasting one of their shows on Nugs.tv

Both are great option during this pandemic.

Hey now, deadheads!

Glad to see a Dead thread around here! I saw 54+ shows from ‘87 to ’95. And I’ve designed my system for the GratefulDead and everything else is secondary:)

What’s what on video is not my wheelhouse, except to say that the YouTube account “voodoonola” and “voodoonola2” are the two ‘official’ accounts where all the Dead’s videos are dumped; and some of them are worked on / ‘fixed’ here and there.
A fave of mine is this France ‘71 show: https://youtu.be/KWbzmRBU6Lg

You can also find a boxset of (almost?) all the official released DVDs together. well worth it. All good stuff.

If you head to archive.org and do a video search for Grateful Dead there's a treasure chest of things to search through.  The audio archive is second to none if streaming soundboards is your thing.

Thanks to all for posting your stories , shows , and where to head for more great finds.
I was actually at theses shows in Hampton Va. They were super special.  I vaguely remember the first few notes to , To Lay Me Down , the crowd erupted as it had been stowed away for quite a few years .
I started to listen to the Sugar Mag , but the sound was a bit tinny to my ears . I’m still going to listen of course, maybe I’ll check out a sound board recording.
I need to explore  the audio archive a bit more for sure.

Every year at our Omnimax Theater they play a full Grateful Dead show for one or two nights . I took my wife this year . It was awesome !!!! Huuuuge screen , sold out !! It was my wife’s first show . She enjoyed it!!
From Giant Stadium with Vince and Bruce .  I thought the show was fantastic!!
I still
Need to see Long Strange Trip on Netflix. I heard it’s very good .

Another highlight show for me was seeing the Boys at Canada’s Wonderland amusement park .
Jerry Band at Squaw Valley, taking the lift up to see the show . Picking blackberries by the quart.
They played a whole set with The Neville Brothers in Pittsburgh. So
Many incredible memories with great friends .
A lot of killer shows at the Philadelphia Spectrum .
