What are your favorite music genres?

If you have question about your genre, ask and I will point you in the right direction.

I'm guessing you intentionally left off classical and jazz as that is almost a given on this site. Even still it was interesting to pair down to only 10 choices for favorite genres. I kept thinking, "But what about this band I enjoy?".

Fixed. I had it listed, I had to shuffle some things (cut and paste), and they got accidently omitted.

I could not place my vote, there is no Prog Rock, Symphonic Rock, Krautrock, Ambient music, smooth jazz and other genres of hi quality music.

Maybe this help:

Actually, the big money came into the pop/rock music industry in the mid-70's due to the super success of the big groups especially Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles. I noticed a big decline in musicianship through the mid -80's. So I basically tell people that I don't listen to music made after 1983 - with a very few exceptions.

I am trying to simplify the music choices. I can't have 100s of choices. Vote as best as you can, ask if you are not sure, and I will add if I missed something.

I get it. I did vote. My above post was an addendum.

I am somewhat genre agnostic.

For me, before genre, comes certain attributes I love in music.

Meaning, I love certain attributes  in music, and as long as all or most of those attributes are met, the genre is almost unimportant. And, it's not like I made a conscious decision to only like music with those attributes, it's just that I found myself, over time, being more and more bored by music without those attributes, or with attributes I don't care about.

Those attributes are (no particular order):

Very high levels of musicianship, complexity, deep and broad range of emotional and/or intellectual content conveyed, (usually) long form musical structure to allow development and variations, avoidance of verse>chorus>bridge>repeat song structure, no need for 'hooks' or easy to sing alone with.

The genres that most often have the attributes I love, and avoids the ones I don't care about, are:

Prog - including the subgenres of: avant-prog, classic prog, Canterbury, Zeuhl, prog-metal.
Jazz - including: fusion, post bop, avant-garde, chamber-jazz, M-Base, and free jazz.
Classical - serial, atonal, modernism, spectralism, 12 tone, new complexity, avant-garde. Most of the classical I listen to is from after 1950 up through the present era. I do not like tonal, "common practice" classical music. I only tend to like the "thorny", angular sounding stuff.

Country, mainstream rock, pop, hip-hop, blues, R&B, Rap, etc, hold no interest for me.

Although, I have a growing interest in bluegrass, because much of it does seem to have many of the attributes I like. As well as Indian classical. I just haven't had time to take a deep dive, since the other genres I listen to continually have new stuff to discover.

This is pretty much my listening choice as well.   Occasionally female vocal folkish pop... Jennifer Warnes, Indigo Girls, Patty Larkin...
