Herb Reichert gives a very positive review to the Pioneer PLX-1000 turntable  in Stereophile, which Steve Guttenberg also praises:

The measured performance box in Stereophile has results almost identical to those on AnalogPlanets review of the AT120.  Pioneer obviously has some differences, in plinth and arm damping, as well as detachable cords and interconnects.  And AT has the built in pre-amp and usb crap.  Supposedly the AT can be much improved by bypassing that.

So, how much improvement do you get for another $400?   Does antiskate on the Pioneer work?

You might be comparing apples and oranges.  All weighting networks are not created equal and results don't always translate easily.

AFAIK the Audio Technica LP1240 and the Stanton ST150 are the same platform as the Pioneer, the LP120 is a cheaper platform and arm.  It appears there are some differences, but they are all the same basic table, one step up from the LP120.

Based on signal to noise ratio there have to be some differences.  15 db better with the Pioneer.  20 db better than the AT 120.  So, what have they done differently?  Motor regularity appears to be the same.  Can damping the plinth and tonearm make that kind of difference?  Or is it because the Pioneer has no phono pre and USB?  Is there a way to turn the AT sow's ear into the proverbial silk purse?   :roll:
