JRiver Media Center recently starting supporting auto detection and playback of HDCD content.

Thanks for that heads up, it's nice to see.  Not using JR any longer though. Looks like it's working for the users who posted.  I liked the format, and was disappointed it never really caught on.

Recently I read somewhere a guy that compared the Yamaha CDX10000 (Centennial Series), via CD source and also and digital input, with modern CD players and DACs, for what I remember the guy was amazed and almost couldn't believe how the Yamaha CDX10000 sound better...

I would like to make an experiment like this someday...

Those Yamahas are being offered for $2,000 on eBay at this time, don't see any sold for that in completed listings.  Must be something special, but not applicable to all vintage cdp's.
