You can break down the music fans even further.  There are the music fans that just enjoy listening to music and there are those who are always searching for new music or discovering a new genre.

Great thread! Very interesting indeed.
I am both a music lover and fan. I have gone to hundreds of live shows.
I can listen to music in my car for hours, on my crappy 5dollar computer speakers.
But, I just sold most of my current system,amp,speakers,cables to fund my next ultimate set of speakers. This is my final pair, my speakers for life. I swear! Lol... I may upgrade my amp and subwoofer down the road though.

I think this is how I would break it down:

I am a live music lovers, it is very engaging and emotional
I am on a Continuous pursuit to make reproductions of said live music more engaging/fulfilling
but live music is always king,
My obsession with gear is a means to an end,
When I reach that end, if I can
I will still love music, but I will enjoy it even more so

I would say music, but love doing research on equipment so I can enjoy the music to the total potential.

I think if you're not totally one way or the other, then they definitely go hand in hand.
