Bastei is the German word for 'bastion' like bastille is to French. In the 15th century there was a wooden castle on top of the peak to the left of the bridge. In those days the bridge was wooden. There were cisterns carved out of the rock to catch rainwater. It was a refuge of last resort. Now it's a tourist attraction. My humble pic doesn't really do it justice. This gives you an idea of the obstacle an invader would face trying to get to the top.

Remembering my American Alpine Institute expedition to Ecuador 1995.
We summited the 3 highest volcanoes in Ecuador.
Highest was Chimborazo at 20,703ft.

Got high altitude sickness on all 3 summits : hyperventilating, nausea, fatigue.
Kept reminding myself I was on vacation - LOL.
Definitely something I'm proud of, but not much fun.
Difficult to even take photographs on the climbs.

It always surprises me to see snow at high elevations, even at the equator.

I remembering trying to navigate through these incredible crevasses on this glacier was a little nerve wracking. Trusting in your crampons and ice axe to keep a firm footing!

This must be the source of the 'tuff' I was told most buildings in Yerevan, Armenia were built of. You see older building in Yerevan consisting of large reddish bricks and although I could see it was relatively soft, it never occurred to me it was volcanic in origin.

Just added a PhotoShop mask layer.
1 shot for sky exposure, 1 shot for foreground exposure.
Thanks!

Thank you.

The Iceland photo is amazing!

Here's another snap of Village Elders. This one's from Bangladesh. A similar theme; a similar feel!

Hi gfroman,

I'm having trouble sizing up your great Jökulsárlón - Iceland's sparkling Ice Diamond Beach.

Is that an iceberg-sized thing or pea-sized???

Thanks

Hi Gene -
These chunks of ice are break-offs from the calving glacier across the bay.
They range in size about 3ft-6ft cubes of various deformed shapes from the waves tossing them around.
Thanks, Gregg

I stumbled on this old Sadhu "Holy Man", while visiting the city of Pashupatinath near Katmandu, Nepal.
He was living in a small, ancient mausoleum in the cemetery.
His dreadlocks must have been 10 feet long!
