Title: Album Art Challenges with MPaD
Post by: zybar on 14 Aug 2011, 12:50 pm
I am not seeing all of my album art even though "I think" that I have everything set up properly and each album has a jpg of the cover.

Here is what I have for settings in MPaD:

Local Cover Art Section:

URL -> bryston-bdp-1.local/music
Filename -> cover.jpg  (every album folder has a cover.jpg file)

Cover Art Section:

Fetch Local cover art -> On
Fetch from Amazon -> On
Fetch from Discogs -> On

A good part of my collection has the cover art embedded into each track.

What else do I need to do in order to see my album art.

Also, is there any way to increase the size of the cover art in MPAD?  The images are much smaller than what I am used to seeing SqueezeCenter or iPeng.

Hi George,

Yes this cover art thing seems very confusing at times as there seems to be so many ways of getting it. I know you have to be online in most cases with MPOD and MPAD.  I find sometimes I can see the album art in MAX and not in MPAD and visa -versa

James,

Looking at the MPaD website, I came across this thread:

http://www.katoemba.net/makesnosenseatall/2011/03/05/cover-art-in-mpod-and-mpad/

What about possibly incorporating some of the proposed solutions on the BDP-1 in the next firmware release?

George,
The URL should be:

http://bryston-bdp-1.local/music

If you do not have http:// in front of it, that may be the fix that you need.

In the MPad "Edit Connection" section where you put the Local Cover Art URL (http://bryston-bdp-1.local/music) make sure the "Filename" area says "cover.jpg" if that is what you use. The filename is case sensitive.

If the album art file on your hard drive is named "cover.jpg", you should see it. If the album art file on your hard drive is named "Cover.jpg" or something else, it won't show up - unless you have "Fetch from Amazon -> On" or "Fetch from Discogs -> On". If you have "Fetch from Amazon" and "Fetch from Discogs" enabled, MPad will try to find the missing cover art on Amazon or Discogs.

FYI. Just posted this in the Mpad forum at http://www.katoemba.net/makesnosenseatall/mpad/comment-page-5/#comment-28027 :

Here’s an interesting (I think) anomaly I have come across while updating cover art in Mpad – if an album is listed twice under different Artists, the cover art will not update even when the correct jpg file is co-located with the audio tracks. A good example of this is the album “Be Yourself Tonight” by the Eurythmics. In scanning through my database listing by Artist name, this album shows up twice – once under Eurythmics, and once under Eurythmics/Elvis Costello. I could not get the cover art to update and display properly for this album even though it had the correct jpg file in place. Turns out that all the tracks on the album have Artist -> Eurythmics in their tag information except for the song Adrian which is Artist -> Eurythmics;Elvis Costello (ripped with dbPoweramp – don’t know why this didn’t happen for the tracks with Aretha Franklin or Stevie Wonder though?!?). Anyway, this causes Mpad to list the album twice under Artist, which also prevents it from updating and displaying the cover art correctly. While listing albums multiple times based on artist involvement is probably a good thing, not being able to display the cover art correctly is not. The workaround in this case was to edit the tag information for the song Adrian, change the artist to Eurythmics, update the database, refresh the local cache, and , voila, the cover art updates correctly right away. Further to this, before the correction, when viewing the available tracks with Mpad starting with the Artist, then the Album, and then the Tracks, all the tracks on this album displayed whether viewing them from Eurythmics or Eurythmics/Elvis Costello, even though there was only the one track that was Eurythmics/Elvis Costello. Any thoughts? Thanks.

that's interesting. Iv'e been messing around for a few days now trying to figure out why I've got about 20 cd's out of 1200 that will not show covers. Everything looks the same from the ones that work to the ones that don't.......will have to go back in...check album names.
thanks for the tip

Hi Robin

You may have to update to the newest version of mpod or mpad

Cover art is at the bottom of the main settings window.  Make sure your cover art is in the same folder as the album tracks.  Make sure the art file is either "cover.jpg" or "folder.jpg" and make sure the art filename in the settings matches your naming convention.  Make sure your URL is correct for the subfolder where your music files are stored.  For example, if they are in /music/FLAC, then the URL must match down to the FLAC level.

If this is all correct, select an album with missing art, and manually reaload using the button that displays.  Art from folders does not reload automatically.

Hope this helps. . .

I am not running Bryston but I am running MPD and mPod, is there a way to determine if your music server is sharing you collection over http?  I am using a Netorked Media Tank as my server but do not know if something further is needed to serve up the cover art.

Thanks,
Ed

They changed it up a bit.  Go into settings and scroll down to play for the options.

I'm still having issues with mine not displaying all of them.

I have the latest version of MPaD and have the three settings turned on (local, amazon & discogs).

I'm thinking that the local is being missed and it's going straight to amazon becuase some covers are missing and some covers are not the ones I have loaded in the directory with the music.

My music is all ripped using DbPoweramp and it places the files into the album directory, under the artist directory.  The artist directory is the top layer of directory sitting on the drive.  The picture file is called Folder.jpg and I have MPaD looking to fetch the cover art from http://bryston-bdp-1.local/ and it isn't finding anything.

From what I can see, I'm doing everything right.  Any ideas?

Wayne.

In the MPad "Edit Connection" section where you put the Local Cover Art URL (http://bryston-bdp-1.local/music) make sure the "Filename" area says "Folder.jpg". The filename is case sensitive. Then hit "reload cover".

Sometimes it helps to restart of MPad - using this method to close the app first first: http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_quit_apps_your_ipad (http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_quit_apps_your_ipad)

Thanks for the reply Greg, but it still hasn't changed anything.

I noticed from your MPaD site that an update is due soon and this may fix the issue.

Wayne.

Dear all,
I have the same problem. Did try all kind of things, like avoiding special characters, upper and lower case in folder and file names. Also the path that is shown in the cover wizard seems allright, but still "Load cover art" gives "No cover found". I did run out off options. Is there a solution for this? I am using MPaD version 1.8.
Warm greetings, Gerard

What I had to do was replace the 'Bryston-BDP-1.local' in the URL with the IP address and that worked fine for me.

Cheers

Sadly all users of MPAD/MPOD share the same daily downloads limits to amazon and discogs, which for some maybe they will always experience that if the limit is reached early.   Also the artwork isn't always correct, but at least MPAD always you to select alternates but that still isn't perfect especially when it can't find one.

Lately, i've been using an app called MusicBrainz (http://musicbrainz.org/) to download the cover art and save it as cover.jpg.    You can configure it to just download the images and they usually have the alternate cover art when an album has multiple releases.  For albums that it doesn't recognize, there are ways to add that information if you choose to do so.

You can also use MusicBrainz to fix your tags and even validate the tags by creating a fingerprint of the file and scan against the database.   There are some limitations if you used a music manager (like itunes) where you won't be able to have it correct file names.

I think my biggest grip with the id3 tags, mpad and about every music player to date, would be with featured artists.   I wish MPAD would respect the album artist tags and use that if it exists and not break out every artists.  With the two options on how to sort the albums, none of them fully work and there really shouldn't be an option, it should just be a tab like albums, artists... so... albumartists tab would be very useful.

IP addresses can change...

Bryston should work with the mpad/mpod and mpd folks to provide a configuration option at the server to populate those fields.  (also add wake-on-lan feature to mpad/mpod assuming the BDPs support it :) ).

You can make your BDP-1 or BDP-2 use the same IP address every time. There's (usually) a function in routers that will allow you to assign the same IP address to any given network device. Just enter the MAC address of your BDP and pick an IP address. Then, your player will always have the same (mine is set at 192.168.0.202).
