Nice deals on Wireless / Computer speakers
« on: 18 Jun 2019, 10:35 pm »
My aging Klipsch G17 speaker I've been using on my PC blew up and I have been scouting around for a replacement.  Found a few good deals.

Definitive Technology W7 - a simple cube speaker with multiple 1" tweeters, a 4" woofer with two 4" passive radiators.  Sound is decent, particularly the treble.  Enough bass to not sound overly thin.   Can connect by hard wired Ethernet, Wifi, optical toslink, and 3.5mm cable.  List is $399.   Newegg has them for $99.   https://www.newegg.com/p/0S6-001R-000D5?

Paradigm PW600.  Another cube speaker with two tweeters and a 5" woofer.  This really sounds good, nice balance on highs and lows.  Has garnered some very positive reviews.  Includes a calibration microphone and room correction software.  Wifi or 3.5mm cable.  200W RMS digital amp.  List $599, Amazon has them for $249 including shipping.

Paradigm PW800.  Larger version of the PW600 with dual 5" woofers.  List $799.   At Amazon for $319.

What about a pair of JBL 306P MkII for $238/pair with free expedited shipping?

That's a good deal, but much different speakers.   They are significantly taller and larger and have no wireless or digital connectivity.  If someone has the space and the right connectivity (i.e. analog) they are worth consideration.

DefTech seems to be the winner @ $99.  Hard to go wrong at that price.  Lots of input options and sounds good to boot.  You can spend more but why?

Oh, there was another deal I ran across, for the KEF Egg desktop speakers.  List price $499, just $229 from Accessories4Less.   Fairly small speakers which support Bluetooth, 3.5mm analog, and has a dual function Mini USB-B & mini-Toslink digital jack.   These got some positive reviews.  They feature a KEF Uni-Q driver.

Ended up buying a DefTech W7.  Found it on the Open Box table at my local Best Buy for the same $99 price as from Newegg and Amazon.  Yeah, it was open box and a bit used, but in perfect condition, with full warranty and a 15-day return policy.

Connected it via a Toslink cable out of my PC.   This sounded a bit clearer to me than the 3.5mm analog cable.   The sound quality is decent, very clear with reasonable mid-bass warmth.   No deep bass (4" woofer) and limited on how loud it can get.  Obviously no stereo imaging as it is just one box but the highs have some spaciousness to them, with tweeters firing out of the front and the sides.   This thing has 5 digital amps in it, a 30W for the woofer and 4 15W amps - one for each tweeter.

I didn't need high fidelity as my PC is in the same room as a my main audio system, so all serious listening is done through it.  But for gaming, a bit of YouTube, maybe some casual listening streaming radio, it is okay.  I like its small size and clear vocals.  It would make for a good sounding audio streamer from a cellphone.

The Paradigm PW600 and PW800 are definitely better but cost 150% to 220% more.  I didn't have that great a need for the increased fidelity.

Overall quite pleased at the $99 price point.
