Firefox 89.0 newest stunts
« on: 1 Jun 2021, 04:14 pm »
It's June 1st (not April 1st) and the new Firefox 89.0 is released. What a mess. The toolbars are huge, even thou the font stays the same size and the icons are dumbed down. The bookmark drop-down has a carriage return after each entry.

So I went to the mozillaZine Firefox support forum, looks like I'm not the only unhappy user.

Mac version OK. Sounds like something that will be patched quickly.

Same here—ok on the Mac. Hope it gets patched quickly for folks having issues.

Notwithstanding the issues for some, it seems like a minor improvement overall.

I'm sure you found it already, but this worked for me:

about:config

search for "browser.proton.enabled" and set to false

search for "browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled" and set to false

There are still a few minor changes I'm not happy with (super light tab colors),
but the big issue of double-spaced bookmarks is fixed.

Yes. Those of us who would like to minimize our exposure to MS, Google, FB in our lives. Always looking for a better way? You have suggestions?

At each new update FF (fail) becomes more mediocre and identical to Chrome, and in this version 89 it became worse than Chrome.

To stop FF automatic updates:
Open the W10 Start Menu.
1) Type regedit.exe and select the result.
2) Confirm the UAC prompt that may appear.
3) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Mozilla \ Firefox.
4) If one of the keys does not exist, create it by right-clicking on the previous key and selecting New > Key.
5) Right click on Firefox and select New > Dword Value (32 bit).
6) Name it DisableAppUpdate.
7) Sets its value to 1.

The FF option at Options Menu was removed by mozila, dont exist anymore, Mozila are blocking the freedom of choice that people used to have in the past years, this company becomes a thorn in the flesh of the custumers.

Thanks. I'll check out Opera.

UPDATE: "Opera recently agreed to be acquired by a Chinese consortium that we hope continues the company's tradition of innovation, strong privacy features, and independence continues."

I think I'd rather have Google watching instead of the Chinese. But that's just me. I'll stay with Firefox.

I've switched from FF to Dissenter.  I found it to have a better suite of security controls.  Brave is a similar browser.

I use Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR). It is a different update channel from the normal Rapid Release version.

Firefox ESR only gets major updates every 42 weeks while still maintaining the same 4 week minor update schedule for crash fixes and security fixes as Rapid Release.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be critical, I'm a digital dislexic and the last person to ask for advice.  I just assumed everyone had moved on from Firefox, which was my browser many years ago.  Chrome worked great until net neutrality was cancelled, I tried Duckduckgo but didn't find it much better.

It doesn't seem to have a mobile application.  At least there's no mobile download button.

I've used Brave for a couple years and have had really good luck.

Before that I used SRWare Iron for probably 7-10 years... Don't remember why I stopped using it.

Both are based on Chrome, but aren't affiliated with google, and put big efforts into privacy... as much as you can without running a VPN.

Probably I am misunderstanding. The choice to disable automatic updates remains in the General Options settings where it has been for years. I just double checked this on Firefox 89 on a Windows 10 machine and a Mac.

Perhaps you aren't scrolling down when you go to Options-->General? It is down the screen a ways.
