Title: Ranking the Rock Guitar gods
Post by: Mag on 10 Apr 2022, 06:15 pm
How would you rank the Rock Guitar gods. I imagine just about every professional band had a capable lead guitarists who has reached a god status. But I wanted to rank them from first to last. I'll start 'er off but I don't have time at the moment for a more comprehensive list.

1. Jimmy Page- Led Zeppelin
2. Ritchie Blackmore- Deep Purple, Rainbow
3. Iana Tommi- Black Sabbath
4. Duane Allman- Allman Bros.
5. Erik Lifeson- Rush
6. Eric Clapton- Cream
7. Marc Farner- Grand Funk
8. Billy Gibbons- ZZ Top
9. Angus Young- AC/DC
10. Troy Sanders- Thin Lizzy

Sigh, another invitation to an opinion stated clearly as fact, with graphs and 8X10 Glossies with a paragraph on the back (thank you Arlo!).

OK, I'll bite:  My top three, in no particular order, are Eric Clapton, Michael Bloomfield and Roy Buchanan.  Based solely on their ability to transport me.  They also recorded the type of music I have loved since to 60's.

There can be only one - BB King

With only one note you instantly know it's BB and he says more with that one note than any of those other guitarists can say in a lifetime.

Bonnie Raitt

Some of my favorites:

Jimi Hendrix
Martin Barre
John McLaughlin
Al Dimeola
Buck Dharma
Neal Schon
Jimmy Herring
Mark Knopfler
Alvin Lee
SRV
Eric Clapton

I wouldn't "rank" these guitarists as each plays in a unique style but is a virtuoso.

I had the good fortune of seeing Randy Rhoads in concert before his death and I suppose he is the one that immediately comes to mind when I think about great guitar players. But really, many musicians have contributed to our enjoyment of their craft. I also like Joe Walsh, David Gilmour and Lindsey Buckingham.

This is all my opinion.

The only 2 guys out of the OP list that have any interest for me, are Ritchie Blackmore and Alex Lifeson.

The rest are pretty uninteresting for me. I no longer like any blues based music, and the list is made up of primarily blues based players. And I used to be fans of most of them.

My list of guitar heroes would look something like this, in no particular order:

Allan Holdsworth* - Gong, Bruford, Soft Machine, solo. Jazz-fusion.
John McLaughlin - Mahavishnu Orchestra. Jazz-fusion.
Steve Hackett - Genesis, solo. Prog
Robert Fripp - King Crimson. Prog, ambeint
Franco Mussida - Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM). Prog
Alex Machacek. Jazz-Fusion
Steve Morse - Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple. Jazz-fusion, bluegrass
Daniel Gildenlow - Pain of Salvation. Prog-metal
Scott McGill - Handfarm, Mcgill/Manring/Stevens. Heavy jazz-fusion
Ralph Towner - Oregon, solo. Chamber-Jazz
Pat Martino - jazz/fusion, one of the best.
Paco De Lucia - could be the best Flamenco guitarist ever.
Sharon Isban - classical

*he is the guitar heroes' guitar hero.

Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Carlos Santana, Wes Montgomery (when he wasn't being pigeon-holed by the record company) Stevie Ray Vaughn, Neal Schon, and Mark Knopfler would be on my list, in no particular order.
