Lurking or Maybe I'm Stalking VSA
« on: 8 Nov 2008, 01:56 pm »
Good Day Folks,

I'm not a VSA owner, though I'm perusing this site to get feedback from current owner.  Basically how I shop around for equipment.

Currently I own Coincident Super Eclipse III speakers. They are excellent speakers, but like all other things in life I'm looking to upgrade.  That's a tall order for these speakers at their price point, but I figured I'd check out VSA's based on the industry reviews and posts on Agon, etc...

Here is my set up:
1) Antique Sound Lab Hurricanes monoblocks - these will drive anything (200W pentode amp also wired for triode operation which reduces the power to 100W).  Don't let the power of these suggest they aren't beautiful because they happen to have beauty and muscle.  I equate these to a Nissan 350 ZX.  Performance, performance, performance.  http://www.ultraaudio.com/equipment/asl_hurricane_dt.htm

2) Canary 903 Line Preamp (4 chasis design) - boutique manufacturer in California that hand builds everything.  Gorgeous! http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/canary4/903.html

3) Canary CA-400 Phono stage (2 chasis design) - kept the phono preamp in the family  http://www.canaryaudio.com/400.htm

4) Doge 6 CDP - I'm not a fan of Chinese CDP's (though I own two), and never thought I would own one in my dedicated two-channel set up.  But, this one simply excels.  Easily bested my French built CDP that was more than twice the price.  Excellent reviews were spot on. A true giant killer.  (I suggest tube rolling with Mullards) http://www.pacificvalve.us/DOGE6.html

5) Roksan Radius 5 w/Dynavector DV20X (low output) cartridge - the pace and rhythm on this TT reinforces the Brits ability to make outstanding tables. http://www.roksan.co.uk/radius5_recplayer.html

I own NHT for my HT system and a pair of Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Signature monitors set up in our living room (driven by Jolida 801 amp and a modded JD-100 CDP).

The Coincident speakers are very detailed (not fatiguing!) with an excellent soundstage.  I've thought about adding a powered sub to get to lower frequencies, and I'm still considering the AV123.com MFW-15 which for the price cannot be beat.

I sent a PM to Joe and I emailed Customer Support at VSA inquiring about the upgrade from the VR-4 to the VR-5 Anniversary.  A seller of the Gen III is within 4 hours of my house and if the upgrade to the VR-5 Anniversary is within budget I may be posting on here with an update.

Anywho, thought I'd say hi seeing as I'm strolling around in your neighborhood poking my nose around.

Regards,
Mark
