B&O ASX2-250 modules available
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 12:00 am »
We're going to sell off our stock of amazing ASX2-250 modules from B&O to raise money for DAC development.

They're quite amazine, turn-key devices that will deliver gobs of clean power.   2 x 230W @ 1% THD+N, 20Hz – 20kHz, 4Ω, SE,  500W @ 1% THD+N, 20Hz – 20kHz, 8Ω, BTL.  Some have reportedly coaxed full power at 4 ohms (over 800w) but you need fans to do it right.  B&O does not  want the liability so they don't tell you how.

They're being offered as-is to sophisticated DIY'ers.  Like any high-powered amplifier module you can blow these up if you mistreat them.

They're quite amazine, turn-key devices that will deliver gobs of clean power. 250w x 2 @ 8 ohms, 500w x 2 @ 4 ohms, theoretically twice the power bridge if you have a big fan.

Both the spec sheet and brochure say that a single 250ASX2 module is rated at 125W/ch X 2 @ 8 ohms and 250W/ch X 2 @ 4 ohms in SE stereo mode.  The 250W @ 8 ohm and 500W @ 4 ohm rating is for a module in BTL bridged single channel mode.

Steve - yes, you're quite right.

2 x 230W @ 1% THD+N, 20Hz – 20kHz, 4Ω, SE
500W @ 1% THD+N, 20Hz – 20kHz, 8Ω, BTL

We had an ICEBlock customer who wanted 500 wpc @ 8 ohms, and these were the only way to do it.  They're more powerful than the ASP500 modules but less well finned.

The BTL power is higher than twice the SE output.  I don't know why.

The BTL power is higher than twice the SE output.  I don't know why.

Ohms Law
P(V) = V x I
I = V/R
P(V) = V^2 / R
...
P(2 x V) = (2 x V)^2 / R
P(2 x V) = 4 x (V^2) / R

P(2 x V) = 4 x P(V)

The reason amps often produce less than 4 times the power when bridged lies in limitations of their power supply, not the bridged topology itself.

In bridging, one is effectively doubling the rail voltages, which (in a perfect world) quadruples power output, same as it would by doubling rail voltages in a non-bridged amplifier.

Thanks Paul!  That makes sense.  The Virtue amps are pre-bridged so I've been looking at this from a different perspective for a long time.

Well now i have tryed asking him a couple of time over email, he replays at first - then no answer even if I email him again over and over with more then 4 days apart.

I have tried this with months apart.

So it seems to me that asx2 for bass/subwoofer duty is a no go.
Would like a tube buffer as in my iceblock.

Gary must be under some stress right now.  He's been hard to reach and I just hope that he is well.

I have a bunch of ASX2-250 modules in stock and they are glorious.

It's not worth cannibalizing ICEBlocks to use these modules, but if you have access to DIY cases, I'm sure that Gary will welcome building you custom ICEBlocks using these modules.  I can discount them to him but not directly over the web.

I did speak with Gary today and he would welcome business.  I told him that if he doesn't pick up the phone or answer emails, it's a bit harder to send him work and money.

Thank you.

I ended up buying a PA power amp for subwoofer duty.
I would have loved  2 pc asx2-250 in BLT with tube buffer, as my front speaker amps (M5001).
But I needed my subwoofer up an running - have needed amp for months now.

So this time around Gary and Virtue make no sales

Somebody wanted to buy 4 of these modules and I cut them a pretty nice deal.  Please IM me if you're interested in something like that.

Please do not announce a "group buy" as this is not a fire-sale... but if you have personal use for them and need a break, let me know.

why not add a tube buffer plus a case and sell it as a standalone amplifier?
