Hagclock obsolete parts
« on: 27 Apr 2012, 03:38 pm »
My Hagclock is on the way (I hope) and I've run into a couple of snags.  The crystal is no longer available.  I've ordered an equivalent but it's SMD and I'll have to fashion some leads for it (ugh).  I also have a crystal of the right frequency pulled from a Rotel player - I'm tempted to use it but I don't know about the capacitance loading - Jim specifies 18pF.  How important is it that it be exactly right?

Also 2n5486 is long gone.  I'm kind of under the impression that this is kind of a jellybean part and that any jfet n-channel will do - at least I hope so, since Digikey has only two similar parts in stock - will this work?   http://search.digikey.com/us/en/products/J112/J112FS-ND/1048969

No, the J111 / J112 won't work well.

Hello and good day to all especially Jim if you are reading this...

I finally got around to assembling my Hagclock and I'm installing it in a Marantz CD-63 SS player. The original 16.9344MHz crystal you need for this build is unfortunately obsolete. Digi-key tech support recommends part# (535-10228-1-ND) as a replacement which will require some lead modifications.  Do I still have to solder the casing of that replacement crystal to the ground plate? Also is part# (DN2534) for L2 required for the 16.9344MHz crystal or is it just required when using the 27.000MHz crystal..?  :dunno:

Best to use the original xtal that came with the player.  If you want a new one from DigiKey, search their database for "16.9344M" and something should turn up.

Hi everyone,

Just built my Hagclock for 27MHz player. Suspect oscillator not started as according to manual. Voltage across R13 reads around 120mV. CLK test point reads around 4V.

Following replacements are used for obsolete parts:
10uH (L2) - DN7693-ND (10uH used instead of 3.9uH per Jim's recommendation)
Crystal 27MHz (Y1) XC1765-ND (per Jim's recommendation)
2N5486 (Q3,Q4) - 2N5486CS-ND

LED lights up, +/- 5V measured correctly. Anyone has any advice regarding which component to check or replace? ICs are soldered directly onboard.

Thanks
Brian

Add C17, touch up the partial solder joints, but most likely you just need to try another xtal.  This circuit was designed fro 11M and 16M.  Push it to 27M and it starts to get picky.

Thanks Jim for the quick reply. I'll try that.
