First tube amp - Eico 2050
« on: 21 Jan 2023, 04:35 am »
I picked up this Eico 2050 integrated amp a few weeks ago at an estate sale. I’ve only listened a little, but is sounds pretty good.

Nice.
Has it been checked recently for bad and out of spec caps and resistors, etc?

Yes, before I  even turned it on, I had a tube tech go through it and check everything. He found a couple of bad resistors and caps and a cold solder joint. Everything else tested good. Even the original tubes.

Those old Eico amps were surprisingly good.  Gary Dodd modified a couple of them for me and thought they had rather nice sounding transformers.  When I taught high school physics, I used to pick them up for after school projects. At that time they were cheap.   I've still got a couple out in the shed.
You probably noticed that most of the tubes are old Mullards- warm and musical.

Love me some Eico's. I have a pair of HF-60's as my everyday drivers.

Hard to find on the cheap anymore.

Are 6L6's a drop in driver tube  replacement?

That I do not know.  I would defer to the experts around here to answer. Currently it has the four original Eico 7591’s stamped “made by Westinghouse”

Output tube?

No, 7591 and 6L6 have different connections (pinout).

I built several Dynaco pieces. Eico was probably their most direct competitor. Interesting design.
