DIY speaker grills...
« on: 22 Mar 2013, 11:20 pm »
I'm building some X-Omni and X-CS speakers strictly for HT use. I'm
thinking that building some DIY baffles for them would be wise ...seems
children's exploring little fingers and speakers are just irrisistible to
each other. So I have two questions please...

Where do you folks purchase the magnets and the corresponding
metal slugs used to hold the grills onto the baffle?

I think I would like to fashion the grills from a black, acoustically
transparent type of 1/4"'-1/2" foam ...does anyone know of a good
source?

Open to any recommendationsor ideas on the subject. Thanks

Any rare earth magnets will do. I got mine from an electronic supply storefront. Try craft stores too.

I used magnets on both the speaker baffle and the grill -- no a metal slugs. I also recessed them in the front baffle, glued into the hole, filled, sanded and painted (or veneered). You cannot see them when the grill is off. I love the look and the operation. I would strongly suggest every DIY speaker build use a magenta approach. ...just be careful of polarity... I wasn't the first time, HA!.

  I use 1/4" O.D. x 1/4" long neodymium magnets from KJ Magnetic, P/N D44-N52:

You install them on the front of your speaker front baffle board and on the grill frame. They work really well.

I've  got them here in the past
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=13  (thanks Ron)

I used the D44 N52  cylinder magnets previously.

For my  OB7's I  got them from a Canadian source and went with a slightly larger  magnet due to the large grills  (D46 N52).
6 in each baffle, 6 in each grill

I use these magnets, cups and washers from Lee Valley. They work great for speakers and I use them in furniture for cabinet door closures. As other have mentioned, installing and veneering over make a slick hidden fastener system.

Thank you gentlemen! ...I'll be ordering some magnets soon then.

Seems for the acoustically transparent speaker grill itself you need
to use 'reticulated polyurethane foam'. Can anyone recommend a
good source for this ...considering our application of the material?
