41 year old Klipschhorns
« on: 30 May 2017, 03:01 pm »
Hi,
I bought a pair of Klipschhorns in 1976 and it recently occurred to me that the 41 year old crossovers might be shot.  I ordered a pair of Crites AA crossovers.  Wow, my babies are back. I thought lack of definition I'd been hearing might be from my 73 year old ears.  Happily it was just the crossovers.

One of my favorite bars in my teens had a high end stereo system using K Horns (in the bar!) and around 2 AM it got quite raucous. Fond memories clouded by drunkenness! :thumb:

How much does Crites charge for a new set of ears in case it isn't the crossovers? :green:

I got the crossovers for $324 a pair delivered,  They also recommend a pair of $1 rubber washers that fit in the squawkers.  It turns out I needed them.  The have DIY kits (just capacitors I think) for $96 +$7 shipping for a pair.  They will also rebuild you old crossovers for a little more .  Prices are for AAs.

Ron,
Nice to talk to you as well.   Most of my system electronics are based on recommendations from you, for which I am grateful.

Welcome to AC, Doug.

I have seen Klipschorns twice now, but wasn't allowed to listen to them. One pair wasn't hooked up; the other pair was available for seriously interested parties only. (*&^%$#@!)

My older brother who got me into stereo, had me buy a pair. He eventually bought a pair and we had them both downstairs in our parent's house. What fun!

He only has one pair now with a LaScala center channel. He says treating the room makes a huge difference. You can also coat the midrange horn (from the back/outside) with non-drying clay or No-Rez sheets to reduce a bit of resonance (ringing).

About 12 years ago Mr Van Alstine recommended I wrap the squawkers and tweeters with cloth electrical tape to mitigate the harshness. It worked. BTW, Ron Lee got me onto the AVA equipment.  I will provide pictures.

Yes, that's where I got the idea from.
