While helping Wayne (BOLDER Cables) set up yesterday some very nice sounds could be heard from the folks next door, Merlin speakers and Joule Electra OTL's I believe. Suprisingly good sound given the fact that they had only set up a little earlier.

The real fun begins today as yesterday is all work and no play.

 Hi Mike,
Keep me posted on the other side of Waynes room too. I have the bigger 100 watt Bella EXTremes right next door in with Dan Wright.

I'll be roving today and will make sure to stop by Dan's room. I saw him unloading stuff yesterday, so I know he made it.

A few photos, haven't taken very many thus far.

Audio Kenesis Jazz Modules - Another speaker I really enjoyed. There was a "rightness" to the tonal quality, at least to me.

I'm sure others will have more to say and more photos. Lots of AC folks at the happy hour - they were still going strong when I left at about 8:00.

Hi all,

Today I just heard the first world class Pioneer S1EX speakers..  The image, tonal balance and bass control is breath taking..  For the first day of RMAF 2006, this one is on the top of my list.  I still can't forget the sonic experience that I have had with these speakers in this afternoon..

 Hello Mike,
Great pictures. Do you mind if I pirate some for the show report on my website?

The speakers look great. I really like the finish on the VMPS and the ACI's look sweet. The Jazz modules look very intriguing as well. Being a big horn/waveguide fan, I wouldn't mind hearing them as well.

Emjoy the rest of the show and if you happen to get into room 1010, take some pictures for me :green:

Bill -

Your amps are awesome, I'm a big fan. I wish I were a richer fan too :)

As for the other rooms, the Dodd audio amps & battery pres look absolutely gorgeous and I think that given the right system they will sound amazing but I wasn't a huge fan of the speakers they were hooked up to. The Zu druids sound nice, a little forward/beaming for my taste but preferable to most rooms at the show. That's especially impressive given that the total system cost was like $6k. The Definitions do sound a whole lot better, and much more to my liking, but the cost is way up there too. The juicy music room was nice, sound was okay given their $2k preamp and $5k power amps were hooked up to cheapie klipsch speakers that made my ears hurt. Audio Note UK was excellent, and the MBL room was even better. And both are out of the reach of 99.9% of us. Those are the notable ones for me, although I was avoiding most of the super high-end rooms. Overall, I think the sound in Montreal last year was better, too many of the rooms at RMAF just made my ears hurt after a matter of seconds, but there was a lot of cool stuff to see & hear.

Salk HT3s sounded great.  Gresham (sp?) Black Swans were amazing.  Selah's "open baffle Accuton midrange" units were also very nice.

I was bound and determined to get to this year's RMAF last year when it passed by... :(  But alas, my wife planned a trip to Mexico, I got a new contract in Iowa, and blammo October was shot down again long before it ever got here....   :x :(

I was really hoping by some miracle it would work out that I could go but it didn't.  So, I greatly appreciate the feedback you all are providing.  I wish I could meet a few more folks I've chatted with over the past few years.... I'd be the first to buy a round for you all.

Thanks again,
Carl

I echo all your sentiments.  It was a trip to Hawaii my wife planned months ago that foiled my RMAF plans this year.

In picture #39 (page 4, top row, 3rd from left) is that a Harbeth Monitor 30 and Super HL5 with the Nuforce/SP Tech S-9?

I would like to have heard that comparison. If anyone did take note who was at the show, I would like to hear your impressions.

Russell,
Your right about the speakers, the Nuforce S-9 sound was good (image, bass, snap) but
they were to far a part for me the set-up could have been better, most rooms were
that way though.

The Harbeth M30 really surprised me how good they sounded they didn’t have the bass punch the S-9 had but still very good sounding speakers.  I was disappointed when I seen the new price list for them (around $4300).

They had the big alien looking GMA's, and everything sounded very good. When I was there the room was packed (which is usually a pretty good indicator) so I didn't get into a good position to hear them, but I'd say the amps are definitely worth consideration.

The GMA speakers have always amazed me with the quality of their sound. The flying mole amps are digital, correct? I love my tubes and was wondering if digital will catch up or ever surpass my love of tube amps. Glad to see progress, tho I wish I was at the RMAF show this year. Enjoy!

My favorites were:

Suite 1130: Azzolina Audio's Gran Sfera Horns were incredible. Close your eyes and they completely disappear.

Suite 1125: Again, the Gran Sfera Horns were incredible, this time teamed with Hagerman electronics.

Suite 535: Kharma Midi Exquisite MKII speakers.

Suite 510: Amber Wave Audio's visually and sonically impressive monoblocks, teamed with Intuitive Design Summit speakers.

I could have happily sat in any of the above rooms for the entire day.

I’ll try to type in some captions, as much as I can remember. If I could input some info into my camera even a room number it would’ve helped me.

Blown away?  Not quite.

This was a good sounding room and the it was a synergistic speaker/amp match.  We played some Natalie Merchant and Dire Straits.  Both were engaging and enjoyable.  We also heard "Fever" sung by Peggy Lee that really made me want to go out and get some Peggy Lee.

Thanks to Roy for a fun time in his room.

OK, Chris (aka Lonewolfny42) and I are again stuck late at night at Denver International Airport.  Seems like a perfect time to post a few comments on some of the rooms we heard at the show.  In no particular order:

Enovation Acoustics/DartZeel - State of the Art midrange and highs with tons of texture, detail, and nuance.  Bass was challenging at times and wasn't at the same level as mid's and high's, but I could hear the potential there.  One of my top five rooms.

GR Reaearch/Dodd Audio - good setup with the new speakers and new Dodd amp/preamp/power conditioner.  Sound was well balanced and didn't have any major weaknesses.

AV123 - as always, the AV123 team is a fun bunch.  Speakers were their new Strata Mini driven by some prototype digital amps.  The system rocked pretty well and the speakers are made very well.

MBL - best dynamics of any system at the show.  These speakers really rocked!!  They did lose a lot of their magic when not driven to high spl's.

RAW - Al did a great job on finishing all the speakers and they are priced very competitively.  Lots of choices at different price points should appeal to a wide group.  Everything was powered by the newly designed Dodd amp/preamp/power conditioner.

Odyessy - Klaus did his usual excellent job providing a value packed system that was engaging and emotional.

Intuitive Design/Amber Wave Audio - find some pics of the Amber Wave Audio tube amps.  They were huge and super cool to look at.  This combo produced a dynamic and big sound that still was able to provide lots of detail and texture.  One of the better rooms at the show.

Butler Audio/Escalante - Chris says that they nailed it this time!

GTT Audio (Kharma) - very expensive, but one of the best sounding mega buck rooms.  Played some Count Basie that was outstanding and made it sound like he was in the room!

Moscode/Placette - got to meet George Kaye and let him know that I love his amp and that I am keeping it!  This room produced some very nice music and I wanted to hear song after song.

Zu - Got to meet Adam and he was very cool.  Got to spin some cd's after hrs and put the Definitions through their paces.  Good dynamics and the finishes are SWEET!

Red Dragon/Daedalus - they made some changes over the weekend and the system was really starting to gel by Sunday afternoon.

Omega/Art Audio - got to hear the new Max Hemp speakers and they got better and better as the weekend went on.  These were definitely full range and did a great job playing some classic rock (Zappa, Pink Floyd, etc...).  Also, the finish was a special silver metallic that really stood out.

Modwright - seemed like each room I went into had a Modwright preamp (for good reason).  I didn't get much time in his main room with Acoustic Zen speakers since it was busy all the time.  The Bella Extreme amps looked very nice as well.

Bolder Cable - what can I say about Wayne that hasn't already been said?  The new MLS RM 30's were beautiful and the new cd waveguide definitely made a nice difference.  Everything was powered by the Response Audio 3205 Bella Extreme and this was a good combination.  The ribbons really liked the tubes.  On Sunday a special Jack Bybee power conditioner and power cord were added into the mix and it took the system up a few notches.

ACI - Mike did a killer job with the Saphire XL's!!  These speakers basically ran full range and were a joy to listen to.  When you factor in the finish, quality, and price they are a steal.  GIK treatments were also found here helping make things better.

Salk/AVA - had some troubles on Friday, but improved a great deal over the weekend - consistently crowded on Saturday.  Fit and finish were outstanding as always.  Tough for me to say more as I love these speakers and know what they are capable of outside of show conditions.

Ayre/Vandersteen - new Ayre amps + Vandy Quatrros =  some nice toe tapping sound.  I especially enjoyed Natalie Merchant's beautiful voice.

There is lots more, but I need to take a break...stay tuned for me comments and hopefully pics.

George and Chris

It was great to meet all of the AC guys
thanks to Lonewolf/Chris, who made sure all of us met each other. :thumb:

I have a bunch of pics I'll post when I get back to Houston tomorrow.
Wayne's modded SB2's were very impressive.  I liked the GIK panels in his room too.
The overall sound in the Hagerman room was terrific - I loved those horns with the (I think) Lowther drivers.
The MaxHemps had a wonderful tone on guitar music.

It definitely took a lot of work to get good sound in the hotel rooms.

I enjoyed Wally's seminar on speaker setup and Fremer's on turntable setup.

Cheers,

Brad in Houston

They were GR Research speakers. Not bad, but not for me. My speakers are open baffle with no real crossover, and these speakers had drivers in an array (complicated crossovers) with boxes. Two things that I just can't tolerate anymore... I'd love to get the chance to hear that gear mated with my Bastanis speakers. Or the Zu Definitions.

Also, someone asked about the Azzolina room I think, this was my second favorite behind MBL (which is strange, as I usually can't stand the ungodly priced gear and firehouse sized cable... but MBL proved me wrong this time). I have a couple pictures that I'll post as soon as I get home as it was a very visually striking system. And the first lowthers I've heard that didn't make me feel like the vocalist was standing in front of me screaming in my face.

Thanks Gary for the reply.

The reason I asked was I am right now building a pair of the GR Research OB 5's, and was wondering what you did not like about them. So thanks for the reply.

If I were a betting man, I would say it is not so much the crossovers you did not like  about the OB's but more the flat frequency response. It was Danny of GR who designed the crossovers in the Azzolina's you liked quite a bit. Did the Azzolina's crossover show themselves on those?

I have not seen a frequency response of the Bastanis Prometheus OB but I bet there is a midrange to lower treble peak doing some exciting things for them. Although this is just a guess having lived with some full range drivers.

Back from RMAF and must admit it was one of the most enthralling audio expereinces I have ever
been witness too.
My single regret is that I didn't make any plans or arrangements to meet any of the AC members who
were in attendance.  I guess being a relatively new member I felt slightly uncomfortable, but should I
be lucky enogh to return some year I would really like to meet you guys.
Toronto is a long way from Denver (didn't get back until 2am this morning) but it was well worth the
effort.
A few of my thoughts and impressions:
I took the approach top visit as many rooms as possible in less than the 2 days iw as there.  Yes, the
major dollar exhibits were amazing but my idea was to try to really zone in on the kind of stuff that I
could actually afford either today or in the future.
A few roos that I thought were great:
Odyssey - what a show Klaus puts on.  The sound emenating from his highly affordable (in the highend
sense of value) gear was amazing.  For just over $5000.00 I could easily have lived with his system and
called it a career, but that actually never happens in our hobby.  I bought the Statos Monos a month ago
but only received them the evening before I left for Denver so I was anxious to hear them.  Wow!!  I
can't wait to hook them up tonite!
Bolder Cable - what a great guy Wayne is.  No nonsense, straight answers and great sound.
GR Research and Dodd Amps - This room blew me away.  I know some of you have commented that his
open baffles designs are not everyone' cup of Java but I must admit that the tube sound coming out
of those drivers was entralling.
Soundsmith - Great to meet Peter Ledermann and his crew from New York.  His small bookshelf speakers
mated with 25 year old modified Tanberg Int amp and CD player was excellent.
There was one thing about visiting these 3 rooms which struck me.  When the music started in these
rooms anybody that was in the room, just sat or stood and listened; no one got up to leave.  We were
being treated to music on affordable levels and isn't that what is all about.
I will let others comment from here on and I will chime in when I rmember more - I am a lttle tired (curse

Cheers

The RMAF show was so darn big that I'm sure none of us got to check out all the rooms. Next year I'm going to make sure I visit all the rooms where our buds here on the circle are showing there gear first. All in all I've got to say that what I did hear was exceptional. Maybe a room or two wasn't to my liking. Had a GREAT!!! time and I hope to see all of you there again next year.

Thats what I said last year Charlie....its big and time... goes.... so fast. And it was nice meeting you Charlie ( and your son Weez...) and all the other AC member's who came to the show.

Best sounding room....might of been Ray Kimber's room. A giant room overflowing with Soundlab speakers up to the ceiling and 6 Pass amps (1200 watts) for power. It was impressive....but I couldn't fit it in my room....
I'm sure there are photo's out already.....  :D

Here's another RMAF show report... (http://www.audiofederation.com/hifiing/2006/RMAF2006/index.htm)...

I had my mind made up for best of show until, on Sunday morning, I dropped into the Kimber room when there wasn't a soul in there except the guy at the controls (not Ray).  I sat in the perfect middle seat and had a private little concert that was frankly breathtaking.  Of course for about $400k of gear it should be.

Before that I had decided the bigger MBL/Kharma room nearly made me cry it was so sweet and believable.  Despite my feelings about these insanely priced pieces ($75k Kharmas) I still had to give the nod to that one.

Rooms I felt compelled to go back to more than once for relief and good music were the Merlin/Joule Electra room (ok, I AM biased) and Wayne's Bolder/VMPS/Response room.  I could have listened in either one all day.  Vinyl in the Chris's Teres room was also scary good but constantly crowded.

It was truly a blast meeting everyone from AC as well.

The juicy music room was nice, sound was okay given their $2k preamp and $5k power amps were hooked up to cheapie klipsch speakers that made my ears hurt.

Gary

I agree, but the Klipsch's sounded better/less bad? than I have ever heard before.

Did anybody get a chance to hear the Omega hemp XRSs in the Juicy Music room? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Lin

I did hear the Omega's there on Saturday....XRS's....sounded good. Even Mark (Juicy Music) could not get over how well they sounded with his tube system....was a very good system match. Big sound from a little driver..... 8)

The speakers in the Juicy Music room left much to be desired. Both of them. But I was there really early on Fri., so it was likely a break-in issue.

I suspect that the Omega's weren't broken in yet...'cause the 8" versions in Louis's room were fine.

Hey Guy's

Just want to thank everyone who stopped buy and hung out and took a listen.I had a great time this year even though i didn't have time to take a listen to eveything i wanted but some of the stuff i heard was pretty good.

The system i had put together ended up sounded real good for the amount money it cost for electronics and the cables and the speaker's.The total amount of the system was somewhere around $10,000.00 for everything. That is retail pricing.

The FJ OHM Dude2 is a great speaker and anyone looking for a new speaker should really check them out.$5800.00 retail.

Thanks again.

GR Research - Danyy once again did a fine job on treating his room. Sharing the room....Gary Dodd. Same speaker's as last year....slight crossover change. With the Dodd 120's, Dodd Battery preamp, and Lite dac and player ....sounded good to my ears. Cranked a little ZZ Top, followed by Danny's selection....AC/DC....it was rock'in....
He also played his new smaller speaker, ribbon front, two woofers on top....big sound, clean, good dynamic's....nice job Danny.... :thumb:

Yeah, this I would agree with. They sounded better than I've heard Klipsch sound before, the midrange was very nice and if it wasn't for the harshness on the high end I would have really liked it. Unfortunately I didn't get to hear the Omegas in that room, and when I did go to the Omega room early Saturday morning something sounded very off so I left after a minute or two.

For me the OB7s sounded good, but more like box speakers than fullrange OB (OB meaning flat baffle- no wings)
Lin :D

My thoughts exactly. They didn't sound bad per say, but they sounded like regular speakers in boxes and just didn't do much for me.

Amber Wave Audio - Wow....those were some mono blocks.. (http://www.amberwaveaudio.com/).... :o
Each about two feet wide....large tubes....very heavy...powering small two way speakers (6.5 woofer)....really filled out the room. Expensive....yes...but sounded sweet !!! 8)

Usher - I know Stan and Carter, good guys from Texas. Had a better and larger room this year....nice slection of Usher speakers. Played many from the line....the 520's and 604's....low priced, nice build, good sounding....great value for the buck. And the larger Dancer model can really rock...check them out. 8)

I think the XRS's were not broken in and simply too rough to show off the Juicy gear.

Great, friendly people - I really like the Blueberry preamp and their class A tube amp.

So you all know, Wayne is one of the coolest people around. At first we where going to only treat one room with the GIK products, but 2 other companies called us to see if we would do the same. Wayne being the nice guy that he is let us ship 13 HUGE BOXES (let me stress these boxes are HUGE) to his shop and he brought everyone of them to the show for us. Thank you Wayne and looking forward to working with you in the future.

I have noticed several people mention ACI as one of the standout rooms. I'd like someone to detail the system...or refer me to another thread that describes the system.

Thanks.

Here you go:

ACI Sapphire XLs on Friday. On Saturday we added a Force XL sub kicking in at about 40Hz. The CDP was an Original Leonardo on loan from AAA Audio, the Integrated amp was a Predator on loan from Music Direct. Cabling was all DH Labs. GIK did a GREAT job with the room treatments (thanks Glenn and Bryan). Those folks who took the time to sit down were generally not in a hurry to leave :)  A lot of fun for sure. I'd be happy to answer any other questions.

I'd just like to say it was great finally meeting a lot of the folks I see here on Audio Circle.  Great bunch of people and good times were had.

Special thanks to Wayne of Boulder Cable, Mike Dzurko of ACI, and Bryan Ingeneto, Gilbert Yeung, and Rick Craig of Selah and Home Audio Connection and Blue Circle respectively for allowing us to exhibit with them this year.  Those were 3 very different systems all set up in basically the exact same room.  Just goes to show that even in the same room, there isn't a stock way to treat it.

Also a special thanks to Jeff Dorgay of Tone Audio Magazine for allowing us to use his room until Mike got there and for providing the nice little integrated from Valve Audio to drive the ACI's.  For those who weren't there, Glenn liked the Sapphire XL's so much he actually bought the show setup.

One other thing I haven't mentioned.  During the show, Jack Bybee dropped off a prototype of his new power conditioner/regenerator.  I'll be very honest that I've never been a 'power guy' other than if there were serious noise/stability issues with power.  Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for a good power supply in the individual pieces as Wayne has already proven that to me with his SB power supplies.  Wayne already had a very nice conditioner in there that helped a lot over the stock flaky house power.  However, when the Bybee went in, there was a major change.  This was not at all something subtle.  If we had time, I would have loved to shoot the room before and after putting that piece into the system.  The difference it made to the bottom end was not at all subtle.

Looking forward to next year.

Bryan

Bryan, you are quite correct re: the power unit in the Bolder Cable room. The sound in there was very, very good even before the Bybee conditioner was used. With it in place, the sound was improved several notches..especially in the bass, as you mentioned. I commented at the show, that Bill Baker's amplifier was really doing a great job in Wayne's room...and I stand by that. What a terrific amplifier.

It was great to meet you, Bryan. The show was so much fun.

Can't comment on outboard crossovers, but the waveguides did work.  I was able to move out of the sweet spot (both left/right and standing up) without things falling apart.

The Bybee conditioner made a pretty substantial improvement in the bass.  It tightened things up and provided more and/or better texture.  I thought the unit was a prototype so I wouldn't expect info on their website.

I picked up some literature that had pix of the finished Bybee unit in the Analysis Audio room where Jack Bybee was camped out.   I believe there were a couple of models with the bigger one at about $3000-3500 list (I'll check later when I'm home).  Wayne indicated the bigger one was a regenerator (a la PS Audio) with a healthy dose of gold or platinum Bybees in it.  I think they also had a power cord with the same treatment though it was somewhat redundant since the filters were also in the conditioner.  I was only in Wayne's room briefly, but I DO know as a system it sounded very, very good, especially in well articulated bass.

The Bybee was initially used in the AA room and they took it out after the first day.  Not sure why, but the Joule VZN-160's are a little different in that they use big variacs on the power supplies to power them up slowly.  Experience with my Joules has been that they generally sound better plugged right into a dedicated outlet.

Okay!
Howdy folks.  Too much drivin that turned me into a puddle once home last nite kept me from posting before.

What everyone already said, but *more!*
I too am not complete in even finding my few sparse notes, but here is some 'stuff'.

A lot of the already mentions, I can agree with previous postings regarding Bolder, ModWright, Amber Wave, Gran Sfaras in both rooms, Dodd/GR Research, Odyssey, Butler and ACI.  Special mentions in particular for me that the Dodd/GRR room again sounded so good with what they had to work with in the room.  Gary's 'tubular love' with amps and new pre (beautiful!) wow!  Those stubby little speakers of which I've forgotten the name but meant to be surrounds made just such great front speakers at really, REALLY stupid money for the kit!  HagTech's use of the Gran Sfara's was outstanding and I like the way Jim voices his gear in particularly.  The Gran Sfara's at the end of the hall with I-don't-know what eqt. was my first room on saturday with a wonderful bit of orchestral music playing that just purged my pallat and set me up for a great day of listening.  The speakers positively disappeared.
My first time to hear ACI, I wanted some of their speakers before I had ever made any 'hi end' investment, and when I stumbled onto some used Vandies, I didn't get to purchase. STILL sorry, and STILL saying 'but I don't NEED more speakers' to myself.
I played some Angelique Kidjo (Oremi) and Curtis Mayfield (New World Order) which have some clever tricky stuff in them in the Modwright room with the big Acoustic Zen speakers and they just did everything right (for me) and got the hell out the way to make me laugh at what I heard in the music. (an important point when my emotions fall out of me, listening.)
lessee, whatelse...
I liked what those IDS (I think) arrays did, even if it took special electronics to help it happen. Sitting sidways to long room, they sounded pretty spiffy to me!  Unique enough to pique my interest.
Oh yeah, in general, like some others mentioned, I tried to keep my stops to rather realistic products that either I could afford or get in my rooms.  That precluded a lot of rooms when I looked in the door, and that was fine, I ran out of time for what I wanted to see anyway.  There were some notable exceptions like Ray Kimbers big demo setup (oh wow!) and a couple of trips into the Wellborne amp with Cogent speaker room.  Boy Howdy, those killer horns were biamped with tricked out 300B monos on the bottom and 45's on the top.  My first listen was with a crowed room and others' music. Nice, but I wanted more.  I went in on an off time and was alone with the Cogent rep.  The track I played, (the very last on Darol Anger's 'Heritage') "To the Sea/Shenandoah" I must have listened to perhaps a thousand times in the years since it came out, and I have heard so many variations of 'what-is-missing' in the layers on many, many systems.  The chorus of voices, the emotions I heard/felt left me breathless with tears streaming freely.  I kid you guys not, this time.  I know horns aren't for everyone's tastes, and these were $55k or so monsters, but "PHEW!"
Again, when the emotions fall out, SOMEthing must be right!  So, okay some DRD amps are STILL on my list!!
Oh yeah, Tyler Acoustics horns, again not to some's tastes were doing something right for me, somewhat similar to my altecs.  I got worked up there too.  Sometimes, again like my Altecs, its not about precision, but about emotion.
Experience Music was a goodie.  I heard them 2 years ago, impressed with their steam-punk kind of look to their woodworking which is just way cool, and that they played a side of vinyl Dead for me.  They still sounded great if beyond my affording.  Their central stack of gear with tubes way older than me in a really neat looking cabinet just tripped my trigger. (again)
Well, I've lost my place and continuity, but these were the big highlights for me, as I think on it.
Somebody who was there help me, there some little speakers, I thought they had a 3 letter name at the end of one hall that were part of a home-theater setup, but also did great 2 channel.. Cannot remember who was telling me about them, $900 little buggers with bass out the ass.  Gotta go looking for notes now.  Great deal, and friendly folk who gave me a rare glimpse of a .wav file of Hunter S. Thompson ranting to an answering machine, to the wrong audio company!!! Too funny for words!!

Oh yeah, 95bchw, in that first picture 'who are these guys?' from the far right, that's me with backpack, Chris/LW, Wayne@Bolder, and I don't know the last fella.

And lest I forget, you guys I met, both 'users' and reps, and the occasional lady are the punchline to my MasterCard commercial.  I rented a Mitsibushi Eclipse for the journey (way big fun pony!), stayed in 2 hotels, ate good, took all the crap I needed and more I didn't, but meeting y'all and chatting...."Priceless".  Thanks for putting up with me.  Although generally considering myself (like many) an introvert, you brought out the real 'social whore' in me and I just didn't want to stop and go to sleep.

Can we do it again next month?
When can I sign up for next year?

Warmest Regards,
DeadFish

:D Properly implemented, they sound great. With a very accurate response on and off axis, beautiful Rosewood cabinets, and rear facing 8" sub powered by a 350 watt plate amp, and only $1,595. a pair... I think they'll sell a lot of them.

The show was a blast, and I had a great time. It was great seeing some of the same old faces and some good friends again.

some thoughts:

Overall theme for me from this show (which apparently differs from a lot of folks on this thread):  "Blah"  There wasn't a lot of stuff that really jumped out at me that was in the realm of possibility for the average consumer... I also heard a ton of crap at this show.  Show conditions aside, there was a lot of bad sound, imo...  looking at it from the retail side of things, it continues to amaze me how so many companies find a market for their products.

Show attendance was supposedly much higher this year than last... but it seemed rather dead in the times I was wandering through the halls and rooms.  A few rooms were consistently full of patrons, however...

Being a retailer, I was interested in some rooms more than others and didn't spend a lot of time in the direct to consumer rooms.  However, I had to stop in and have a listen to the Salk stuff that everyone raves about on here.  There were some typical show condition things that were hurting the overall sound (which Salk owners confirmed for me), but I was surprised that the speakers weren't nearly as aggressive as I was anticipating.  I really, really, really don't like the Seas excel driver used up into the midrange in every other design I've heard.  But it was quite good in Jim's speaker.  Kudos to you Jim!

The AmberWave room was cool... but I couldn't stand in there for more than a minute before the hum and fan noise drove me bonkers and I had to leave... I didn't even get a chance to hear the system.

The Evolution Audio speakers were one of my favorite things I heard at the show.  They weren't perfect.  But I'd put a pair of them in my living room at the asking price.  Here, too was another example of a speaker defying my previously held belief.  This is the first design with an Accuton driver that I actually liked.  Great look as well.  JT is going to sell a bunch of those to all his customers.  Great to see Flo and Kevin again as well.

The Butler/Escalante room wasn't quite right for most of the weekend.  I think a lot of it had to do with the Monads that BK brought had just been completed prior to the show and therefore weren't really broken in.  By late Sunday afternoon, it was starting to sound fantastic in there.  That's my kind of sound (which might explain why I have the almost identical setup except for source :) hehe)

The Verity Audio room was quite good and showcased what you could do in a decent sized space with a minimal system.  Their speakers are getting to be quite expensive, but I can see why so many audiophiles love them.

The Acapella (sp?) speakers were really quite good and did not sound like a typical horn at all.  I was very impressed with these fed by Einstein electronics....

It was great to meet a few AC folks and customers.  Unfortunately, some of you now know what I look like.... so much for keeping a low profile :)

Shane, you certainly look younger than you sounded..

I total agreed with you on the Acapella, to my ear, it's the most smooth & pleasant sounding system at the show, the problem is it doesn't have that much bass. But considering that it retails for $48k whereas the Evolution retails for $38k, I have to admit that the Evolution is a better value.

some thoughts:

Shane,

I agree that there were a lot of rooms that didn't sound good and had me scratching my head.  I won't name names, since we all hear differently and I don't feel like getting flamed.

I think it appeared less crowded due to the increased number of rooms, but who knows for sure?

Before hearing the Salk HT3's I was afraid of the metal drivers and wasn't sure I would like them.  As you heard for yourself, there isn't any edge or glare to the HT3's (unless it is the gear updtream putting it there).

As for the Evolution speakers...they were my favorite of the show.  I spent a ton of time in that room and about half a dozen buddies bought the speakers (lucky, lucky, lucky).  Jonathan (Evolution Acoustics) and Alvin (Grand Prix Audio) are two of the nicest guys and really love audio!  I can't wait to hear a pair of MM3's in a home setting fully setup.

Too bad I didn't hear the Butler/Escalante room on Sunday, it would have been nice to hear that combo locked in and perfomring up to its potential.

As mentioned in a few threads, I really enjoyed the show. And it was great to meet so many of the AC crowd. A great time.

A few general comments: I was not looking for any particular gear, per se, but visited every room I could find that was displaying or playing vinyl. (my first love, audio-wise). Most all the rooms seemed a little bass heavy to me- some more than others. Low ceilings maybe? Some of the extreeme esoteric gear did little for me, really. I reviewed my notes and literature that I picked up with notes scrawled too; and one common theme that was written on all my notes was whether the equipment 'got out of the way' and allowed me to really 'hear the music'. Those are the rooms/gear I'll discuss here, in no particular order...but with emphasis on the AC group:

-Stirling Broadcast LS3/5a V2 Loudspeakers: Charming speaker and very musical. Allowed the music to flow and they 'disappeared' just fine. (it didn't hurt that they were driven with Manley EL-84 based amps)

-Serious Stereo 2A3 Amps & Altec 15" 604 Loudspeakers: The sound from this system was extreemly real and engaging. Deep soundstage.

-VMPS RM-30's/Musica Bella 3205/Modified Squeezebox/et al: Beautiful sound in Wayne's room. All things considered, probably the most 'relaxed' sound at the show, while sacrificing nothing in the way of resolution.

-AVA/Salk: My favorite combination in this room was the Ultra DAC/T-8/Ultra Amp/HT-3 combo. As mentioned in another thread, the Ultimate 70 thru the HT-2's left nothing to be desired either...

-Odyssey: Very musical room. Much more resolving than Klaus admits to. True high-end bargains if ever there was any. The very best bipolar amplifiers I've ever heard at any sane cost, and then some.

-Merlin/Joule/Audio Aero: Very engaging and harmonically complete sound. My little TSM's share the same resolving midrange but with less bass and 'scale'. (guess that's why I like 'em so much). Neutral and refined presentation.

-ACI: The Sapphire XL's are a great speaker. The amp and player were a great match. When I was there on Fri.- the sub wasn't running yet, and I never missed it.

-Linn Room: The music flowed in here too. Scale was smaller than some, but well balanced.

-Selah/Blue Circle: The open baffle upper cabinet allowed for an extreemly deep and big soundstage. Bass was deep but a little too large for my taste...I'll bet it was a room issue...

My notes on other rooms are less complete; except I must mention HagTech and great sound from the Trumpet phono stage (I'm thinking about a Cornet in the future); The Zu room where they were playing the little Music Reference RM-10MK2 amplifier (a great piece); and Louis's 8" Hemptones (only wish I could have heard them with Vinnie's Sig. 30). Very natural sound.

I saw many more rooms, but either the sound didn't draw me in; or the crowds were too large each time for a 'good' listen.

:slap: oh yeah, The Nuforce/Harbeth/SOTA/ et al room: The SP9 speakers really sang with the Nuforce amps. The Harbeths aren't as good a match. Damn, the sound of vinyl still grabs me better than digital, though.

That's enough. Whew.

If you read the link that Danny posted it appears as these speakers might be available from AV123 in the future in fully assembled form.

A dear friend of mine was at the show and said the Eben X3” from Raidho was the most beautiful speaker he heard. First of all, at $16K a pair, they should be. Anyone else agree? I have never heard them.

I thought the Ebens sounded better last year (last year there were both X3's in the Nordost room and X-Centrics in another room).  Part of the problem for me is that Lars from Nordost likes to listen at such loud levels that I didn't want to stay in the room that long.  They still sounded good this year, I just wasn't as impressed as I was last year.

It just goes to show that what one person may think sounds good another might not think the same. What a wonderful hobby. It may take some time to find what one likes and not necessarily a lot of cash, but we can all be happy! :D

I heard the X-3 at CES last year, and I thought they were superb...some of the best bass performance I've heard in a speaker...
