Stacking Bryston components and order?
« on: 11 Jan 2022, 06:39 pm »
I have a (new to me) BDA-2 on the way and need to reorganize my audio rack

I have two shelves to hold the following equipment:

Cambridge CXC transport
BP-25P preamp with MPS-1 power supply
BDP-1
BDA-2

Does it really matter how they are stacked, i've read to keep the BDP on top due to heat and also that the BDP and BDA should be seperated vs stacked on top of each other?

If it doesn't matter i plan to put the preamp on top of the cd transport and the BDP on top of the BDA

Thanks in advance.

Derek

*watching this thread*

I have 3 of the same Bryston components. Currently, I have them stacked from top to bottom as:

BDA2
BDP1
BP25
MPS-1 is on another shelf so that it's somewhat farther away.

Yeah no kidding haha.

I think ideally if one can avoid stacking at all, that's best - but most can't afford that amount of space.

I understand we don't always have the right amount of space or shelves, to actually separate the components.
I never put anything on top of my amp Bryston 3B3. other components with not much heat I stack, but I separate them with hockey pucks (very Canadian). Works great, low cost and looks discrete.
    Check out the pic.

    interesting.

what do the pucks do other than increase space for heat dissipation?

I'm not an expert, but I think its almost as good as separating with shelves and I'm sure it dissipates the heat. I was just trying to give you alternatives.

How much physical space do you have vertically in your cabinet?  AC Infinity makes component fans you could separate the equipment with.  The component fans are deeper than the BDP, but you can insert soft feet (like Isoacoustics, or Herbie's Tenderfeet) between components to make it work.

a couple inches above and it is completely open on the sides.

heat really isn't a concern in my setup, i had found a thread from years ago where it was stated that the BDP and BDA sounded better separated but since there hasn't been anyone weighing in i'm taking it as audiofoolery and i'll stack as i see fit and what looks best/most erganomically.

The BDA-2 arrives today so i'll have a fun weekend rearranging and testing

My dealer suggested that I use them to dampen vibrations. Who knows? But I do love these inexpensive tweaks. Mind you, hockey pucks are a lot more expensive these days than they were when I was a kid.

The BDP-1s don’t run nearly as warm as the BDP-2s.  Not sure not long you’ve had your BDP-1, but if you have it open, it doesn’t hurt to plug and unplug the inner serial cable.   Error code 09 happened twice on one of my BDP-1s.  One of my BDP-1s was trouble free, the other required a couple of CF card refreshs, and cable reconnects.  The error codes don’t pop up often, but they are time savers tracking down the trouble.  I had a loose fuse in a BDP-2 that I bought used and the codes helped me track things down.  Have fun with your tests.

Pay attention to e-noise as your stacking components. My tubed headphone amp definitely did not like sitting too close to the BDP-2.  Generated a hum at idle (volume didn’t matter).

...i found out that the BDP3 can get pretty hot if there is not enough space above of it.
I am a lucky owner of an 875 amplifier but i NEVER place anything above this amp...otherwise  it can produce boiling heat :o

Looks great.  Are you using any isolation footers between and underneath your components?

Isoacoustics (Orea) makes some nice ones (type of footer used is by component weight)
