BANG & OLUFSEN BEOLAB 6000 MK2 MODIFICATIONS
« on: 18 May 2021, 06:07 pm »
A few years after discussing with Jeff possible modifications to my B&O Beolab 6000 MK2 active speakers, I have finally got round to working on them. The reason that I chose this particular model, is because I think that it has got some tremendous potential to be a world class speaker (right up there with the best). I’m nearly finished, just a few more things to do to them.

I wanted to document my progress here for future reference. Here is a list of the mods…

1) DAMP THE INSIDE OF CABINET WITH 4.5MM THICK FELT.

2) DAMP THE BACK OF THE MID/WOOFERS AND TWEETER.

3) REPLACE ALL INTERNAL WIRING.

4) NEOTECH 12AWG UPOCC TEFLON STRANDED FOR MAIN POWER WIRES.

5) BARE NEOTECH COPPER 22AWG SOLID CORE FOR TWEETERS (TREATED WITH DEOXIT GOLD & COVERED WITH COTTON SLEEVE).

6) BARE NEOTECH COPPER 18AWG SOLID CORE FOR MID/BASS UNITS (TREATED WITH DEOXIT GOLD & COVERED WITH COTTON SLEEVE).

7) BARE UPOCC 20AWG SILVER PLATED COPPER WITH COTTON SLEEVE (FOR SIGNAL WIRES).

8) BRAIDED COPPER SHIELD OVER THE TOP OF SIGNAL WIRES.

9) BLOCK OFF THE FLIMSY PLASTIC BASS REFLEX PORT & REPLACE WITH ANGLED RUBBER PIPE.

10) REPLACE ALL ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS WITH ELNA SILMIC II, NICHICON MUSE, MUNDORF AG.

I had B&O turntables for a couple of decades.  Still got them, but once they begin to develop problems, they're not worth the efforts to get them running again (over engineered IMO).  I admire the hours and $$ you've put in on B&O speakers.  It will be interesting to hear your opinions of before and after.

My Beolab 6000’s were made in 2014, so luckily they’re not very old. My modded Beolab 4000’s made in the year 2000 are reliable as a rock. Plenty of life left in them. After the mods they are extremely holographic with real ‘in the room sound’ (depending on the music).

By the way I paid £150 for the Beolab 4000, and I paid another £150 for it’s modifications.

They aren't that expensive, and I've seen a few at a local shop.  Honestly, never thought they warranted much attention.

That’s the great thing about them. Not expensive, but you get a significant amount of sound for the money. As long as you partner with a Beosound unit.

However, I have noticed that they sound flat (no soundstage) when partnered with non B&O systems via RCA socket. They only come alive with other B&O equipment through the DIN sockets.

Ok I’ve been running in these modded Beolab 6000’s for approx 8 hours so far. It’s still early days, but so far I notice a definite improvement in 3d soundstage with the speakers disappearing/melting into the background. I also hear a significant reduction of perceived cabinet colorations. But most noticeable is the new ability I now have; to be able to play them louder without the sound falling apart due to distortion. Finally the bass is much cleaner than before. I’ll let people know how I’m getting on when I reach 100 hours of play time.

When I was in high school, I used to go to my local Hifi store and DROOL over this setup! Despite being several decades old at this point, this system still looks like it's from the future. Thanks for sharing your mods. Looking forward to your updates on performance.
