hi werd,

Defragging reduces the number of read/writes

james

Thanks James, picked up a lexor usb stick. Love the 44.1 like you said. Its all good. I notice their are a lot of decent 192khz on HD tracks now that i will be looking at getting. When i find some i will post in the "what are you currently listening to thread on this board"

Yes I have both a 'Lexor' 32G AND 64G thumbdrive and them along with 'Cruser' are my favorites.

Defragging reduces the number of read/writes

Defragmentation makes sense on a hard drive with hundreds and thousands of files that are constantly created and deleted.  Because there are no read/write heads on a flash drive, even if a song file got fragmented, there is an imperceptable lag between reading contiguous data chunks, and there would be virtually no performance increase.

Also, because flash memory longevity is largely based on the number of write cycles rather than read cycles, one could argue that routine defragmentation, which would actually generate a larger number of writes, might adversely affect flash drive lifespan versus not defragging at all.

I guess i will not be defraggin any usb's but i do notice that these lexor usb sticks fit really snug into the usb slot (tight). I am guessing that is a good thing?

Time for a "Bryston Lube" tube. For those USB keys.

Returning to Bryston Max...

My music folders on my memory stick contain FLACs named 01 <Title1>, 02 <Title2> etc
This way they appear on my Windows PC in the correct order ie the order they appear on the original CD
But when I view the folder contents in Max, the order is all higgldy piggldy

Why is this so?

James, you'll see this on the jpeg I sent you last week.

Terry

Solved the problem.

The album by Miles Davis contains three CDs. I put all the songs into one directory on the memory stick and renamed the file names as above but kept the meta data the same.
Hence I had three tracks ones, three track twos etc. (one from each CD)
Max is sorting the tracks in its display by track number stored in the meta data hence the wierd track order!

BTW
The feature within Max to change the skin doesn't seem to work.
How do you use Max on a PC to add tracks to an album on the memory stick attached to the BDP-1?

Hi Terry,

Good news -  thanks for the update.

The skin change works OK for me  - let me check further. Are you hitting UPDATE then reloading MAX?
You do NOT use MAX or any other music player interface to transfer files - you use your home Network and drag and drop from one drive to another.  Remember the receiving attached drive must be formated Fat32.

Great.
Do I get a job as a software tester?

It doesn't mention a reload of Max is required

As to the last point, are you saying I can see thumb drives attached to the BDP-1 in Windows on my computer?
Doesn't mention that anywhere, how do I do that?

BTW, what's the point of the "Bryston says" feature?

Hi Terry

Yes the BDP-1 will be visable on your computer under NETWORKS.

The 'Bryston Says' allows me to type in rude comments that show up on the front of the BDP-1 in the display - the engineering guys had a lot of fun with that when I was testing the BDP-1 prototypes :D

I reported last week that I coudn't connect fro my PC to the BDP-1 using the address bryston-bdp-1.local
What I ended up doing is adding an entry into my HOSTS file:
for this and the BDP's IP address of ....1.11
The Bryston address now works.

BTW The latest firmware lets you use fixed ip or DHCP
Any advantages to either?
Not saying it was in the previous firmware but I didn't notice.

The Max interface doesn't basically work in IE v8.
The screen gets incredibly corrupt when you view a track list.
Ok in Firefox but I don't consider that an adequate excuse as IE has the vast majority of the browser market on Windows PCs

Hi Terry

iE is NOT recommended with MAX :nono:       MINI works fine With IE and MAX works fine with all other browsers - Safari, Firefox, Chrome.

IP address can change so a static IP prevents that.

James

Bugsy

Terry I had the same problem re:connect fro my PC to the BDP-1 using the address bryston-bdp-1.local

Try just using this address bryston-bdp-1. in Minion or Gnome. It worked for me and I did not have to enter the ip address as that keeps changing.

Hi Larry,

In the config stuff in Max on a PC you can deselect DHCP and use fixed IP.
That way the IP is static and sdoesn't change.
I also went into one of the settings in my router (I have a Draytek Vigor which is good for configureability) and bound a fixed IP to the Bryston's MAC address.

You mean, don't put .local at the end of the address?
